Not enough starting blocks?! Somebody lend her a foot instead. Runners on your mark ... get set the gun cracks the air and the Park Center Girls Track Team is on their way. The air is tense as the high jumper approaches the high jump, she takes off and clears the bar. The team breathes a sigh of relief and breaks into cheers as she takes first place. Although the team didn't have an impressive record, they improved greatly this season. They didn't win a conference meet, but their spirit and determination kept them going to place sixth out of eighteen schools in the District Meet, far ahead of schools they had previously lost to. The team sent five girls to regions, more than they have ever sent before. The team was captained by Maureen Fourre. Track events were coached by Bev Anderson, field events by Fee Meyer. Coach Anderson says, “We had a young team that has a lot of potential.” 6 Behind It All Ralph Durand. Martin Wirth. Charles Frocbcl. Leroy Norsted, Leland Johnson. Bruce Bauer. Ward Whalen. La Beau states, however, that it has the potential of being the largest youth organization in the country. It’s conventions are a gathering of individuals in trade, technical, health, and industrial occupations. La Beau says it's an opportunity for young people with like interests to get together and share ideas and also compete in their particular career area.” This year’s club participated in: campaigning for a state officer working on a club display —contests against other chapters —several breakfast and luncheon meetings where they studied to be leaders in the world of work. Interscholastic Chess. The Pirate Chessmen had a very successful first season in compiling a record of 11 wins, and 3 losses. They finished in the runner-up position of the Northwest division of the Twin City Chess League to ultimate State Champion Robins-dale. Among the teams the Pirates competed against and defeated were Blake. Benild. Armstrong. Cooper, Anoka and Cretin. By finishing runnerup in their division Park Center advanced to the State Chess Tournament. They defeated St. Paul Campion Cretin before losing to Southern Minnesota Champion Burnsville in the second round of the tournament. The Pirates ultimately finished fifth in the state an outstanding accomplishment for a first year team. The Chess Team was coached by Bob Rasmussen and members included: Seniors Jeff Larson, who was named All-State. Joe Jack-son. Rich Rcmiarz and Randy Blackorbay. The underclassmen were Junior Charlie Cherrier and Sophomores Chris Schwanz and Brad Steger. SEATED: Joe Jackson. Jeff Larson. Bob Rasmussen (coach). Bob Prins. STANDING: Charlie Cherrier. We had other goals besides the Conference title. We conquered ourselves and learned to take winning and defeat with almost the same smile and handshake. The team achieved other things too. All four singles players Paula Adams, Ann Machmcier, Judy Knight and Jane Gunberg were All-Conference. And in the Districts the team placed a very close second to Anoka. Although this year was good, next year will be even better. We've come a long way, baby ... But not far enough! Led by captains Steve Perry and Jon Borchardt, the Pirates swept eight straight opponents before losing their final game to Fridley. They featured the most potent offense (5.2 yards per rush) and finest defense (1.1 yards per rush) in Pirate history. The highlight of the season was the double win over arch-rival Osseo. In the first game, the Orioles grabbed leads of 7-0 and 14-7 before being stunned by QB Terry Westerman’s 67-yard touchdown run and Bob Faust’s burst for the game-winning extra points. The second game found Osseo leading again. 6-0, but the Pirates were not to be denied as they romped to a 24-6 victory. The defense, led by Perry Borchardt, Mike Sutton and Al Eckhoff stopped Ossc cold as the offense, with touchdowns by Westerman, Faust. Coach Gary Dovcl, when considering the numerous achievements of the 1975 PC Boy’s Swimming Team, under the leadership of Captain Lee Peterson and nine other seniors. The Pirate swimmers began by going undefeated in their 11 dual meets, winning the St. Cloud Invitational and taking 34 blue ribbons home out of 34 possible at the Kellog Invitational. Then they settled down to business. By posting a 6-0 record in Conference meets they became the 1975 Skyline Conference Champions, and placed 10 members on the All-Conference Team. For the second year in a row Pirate Swimmers won the District 16 Boy’s Swimming Meet, taking 6 first places. In the North Metro Region Meet the Pirates were runner-up and qualified nine swimmers and two divers for competition in the State Meet. Park Center closed the season at State by placing 11th with Corey Croaston taking fourth place in diving, Kevin Hopps and cousin Todd Hopps taking ninth and twelfth respectively in the 500 freestyle, and the 400 freestyle relay team of Steve White, Mark Otis. Dan O'Brien and Mike Thellin placing fourth. And (if that isn't enough) Coach Gary Dovel was voted North Metro Region “Coach of the Year . “Great season.” 99 Swimming 100 Boy’s Gymnastics ROW I (L TO R): Mark Gausman, Jeff Munzel, Kevin Prady. Our Pirates faced the toughest basketball schedule in the history of the school. With only three seniors on our squad. Park Center played a varsity schedule with virtually a junior varsity line-up. The Pirates finished the Skyline Conference in fourth place. It was a year marked by spor-atic results, but always distinguished by a hustling, enthusiastic team. In regional play Park Center defeated their first round opponent: St. Paul Washington, and then fell at the hands of Powerful Anoka the number one ranked team in the state. The Pirate effort was highlighted by outscoring the Tornadoes in the second half 29-23. This speaks well for the Pirate fortune next year. Basketball ROW I (1. For three years I've shared lockers, gone to games, been on teams, seen concerts, applauded plays, sat through Fnglish. gone to movies, shared long talks and small talk, special moments ... and grown ............. with high school friends ... I see it ending now ... the going on, the leaving behind, and I suddenly realize ... how much I’m going to miss it After all. you know, high school is people ... names, faces ... and special individuals ... the Best ... unique ... different ... important ... themselves ... Parts of me belong to them and I cannot help but feel a twinge of pain ... As I leave for the future ... Oh yes. we will “Keep in touch”, the best of them and I ... we will write, correspond, visit ... of course. But somehow it won't be quite the same ... because it was here, in the hallways, in the classrooms, from 7:50 to 2:15 weekdays and on the weekends and in-between semesters and in-between years ... at Park Center High School, which few in the ultimate cosmos recognize as even existing ... that we grew to know and learned to care together. Part of our friendships ... and me ... and them . . . remain suspended in the halls of PC and within the corridors of time ... I remember ... and shed ... a tear ... as I go on. 204 206 . . .
