The German Club members have attended a few German movies and gone to the Bavarian Hunter Restaurant during the year. All in preparation for the highlight of the year: A trip to Germany. Twenty-seven students found out how their dreams became reality as each one raised $400 for a fifteen day visit to Germany. Before leaving on their trip, they attended six evening seminars, and signed a contract vowing to speak exclusively German while there. The students visited Frankfurt, Munchen (Munich), Dinkelbuhl, Konstanse, and Ballingen. During their stay at Ballingen they lived with a German family for four days. 44 Mr. Causton at Bavarian Hunter Restaurant. IBienvenido al circulo espanol! Spanish club is: parties .. pinatas .. Such was the case with this years' Pirouettes. With strong determination and the will to perform, they entertained the fans at many PC activities. Practices were held 3 to 4 times a week throughout the school year. The girls worked hard and had fun as a team. Each time they danced, they came out smiling. It's been a good year because of the fact that we've had good people to work with. There were no personality conflicts. -Cindy Atkins-senior- When you're on danceline, danceline is your whole life. Lead parts were held by Mike Hoover, Heidi Abrahamsen, John Mehaffy, Karen Watson, and Cindy Rossow. Supporting them were a hearty cast and crew. The play centered around a boy, John Worthing (Earnest). It revolved between his life from the time he was found in a suitcase, through his romance with Gwendolyn, and onto the discovery of his real family. The other characters all fit into John Worthing's life. At the conclusion of the play he discovers the value of his family name (Earnest) and the last line of the play depicts this, He's realized for the first time in his life the importance of being Earnest. — The production was Excellent. For a while it didn't look too good-then we worked super hard. —Mike Hoover By the way are you catching flies? I can't get up my pants split. 36 The Importance of Being Earnest We must find out who I am. Guess who's coming to tea? 57 I love the feel of your warm gloves. The 1973 Fall Musical: The 1973 Park Center musical South Pacific gave the students involved the opportunity to display their theatrical, musical, and choreographical talents. The leads were played by Leanne Pavlik (Nellie Korbush), Chris Atkins (Emile DeBech), and Craig Olson (Joe). S8 South Pacific South Pacific' turned out to be the most extravagant and dramatic musical Park Center ever undertook. The challenge of the large cast, dramatic roles, and numerous scenes was undertaken and conquered. The leading roles, both dramatically and especially musically, were well accomplished. Mr. Anthony 59 There Ain'l Nothin' Like A Dame.” Dracula, unlike other Park Center plays, was produced by students. They were supervised by Mrs. Suzanne Armstrong and Mr. Mark Cushman, a St. Cloud student teacher. Russel Graves, a senior, directed the play. The set was designed by Bruce Machmeier and Chris Atkins composed and directed background music for the production. Many of the students, who also participated in past plays, felt this production was their best and the one they worked on the hardest. Their efforts were rewarded by excellent audiences all three nights. Dracula 60 Michael Hoover (Dracula) swooped over Patty Lindstrom (Lucy) as he began to control her life. Michael Hoover, male lead, entered through the trick bookcase, part of the Dracula set designed by Bruce Machmeier. 61 Chris Atkins working backstage. The Junior Varsity Squad has many functions in the total program of Varsity Football. Serving as the Scout Squad is just one of these. The Scout Squad contains the people who aren't varsity starters. These people use the plays from next weeks opponents and run these for the defense, while they show the defenses. Most commonly used by the same opponents. Another function of the JV is that it is both a proving and an improving ground for future varsity players. The purpose of the B-Squad sophomore team is to smooth out the rough edges of football learned in Junior High. Also to teach new techniques, perhaps more useful to the Park Center program at the present. For the third straight year the B-Squad has gone undefeated, a feat well done and well deserved of all Pirate honor. Winning is not a sometime thing; it's an all the-time thing. You don't win once in a while, you don't do things right once in a while, you do them right all the time. Win ning is a habit. (Excerpt from speech by Vince Lombardi). Cross Country As fifty-six boys came out for Cross Country this year, their devotion, sacrafice and aim to win made one of the biggest and best teams around. The boys started running the third week in August and never stopped until they had first in conference, third in district and sixth in regionals. The Girls Tennis Team this past year passed a number of significant milestones. The team was led by outstanding co-captains, Cathy Vanderheyden and Connie Lundgren who showed spirit, enthusiasm and good sportsmanship during the entire season. If two words could summarize last fall they would probably be spirit and dedication. Those words, characteristic of boys athletics for years, are now meaningful for girl athletes as well. Other successes from fall 1973 include two players being named all-conference: 1st Doubles team Connie Lundgren and Meg Hermes; and also of importance is the number of outstanding girls who played tennis for Park Center. Both the Junior Varsity and B squad teams were undefeated last season. We feel the girls learned what they need to require of themselves if they are to be successful tennis players, and our hope is that this knowledge will help prepare them to be better women in the future. We are extremely pleased with the progress the girls have shown, and are anxious for next year's season. -Larry Larson 74 STANDINGS Mahtomedi Osseo Fridley PARK CENTER Forest Lake Spring Lake Park Brooklyn Center Co-Captain Cathy Vanderhcyden. Bodily Control Physical Coordination unmatched in any other sport. That's gymnastics ... and that's what the P.C. girls displayed this third season of their existence. It sure wasn't easy! But then nobody said it would be. It was toil and sweat, from the balcony practice floor to the nerve filled gymnasium while competing. Those cool looking performances of style and skill didn't come easy, as any of the girls will tell. The limber team was captained by Karen Columbus, who provided the team with good leadership. 79 Y It takes Guts! It takes a guy who likes to do daring things. Enjoys the challenge of spectacular stunts and routines. It helps to start Young. The sooner a guy starts the better his chances are of doing more fantastic routines and stunts. This doesn't mean you have to start young because we have had guys place high in the state startings as sophomores. Muscle! It takes a great deal of strength to be able to do many of the things a gymnast does. As strength is acquired, more and better stunts are acquired. It is a constant thing a gymnast has to work on. Many of the people that watch us think we have to be nuts, after all anyone who flies around a 8ft. high bar on his hands and just lets go in hopes that he'll land on his feet has to be nuts. Nuts—No! Besides we know we'll land on our feet. Agile! You have to be able to adjust to balance quickly. Be able to change directions quickly, not only on your feet, but on your hands. Sacrifices! Like any athlete you have to devote a great deal. Give up jobs or just simply time that could be used for many other things. You have to set your priorities to benefit you as a gymnast and the team. Not think of just yourself all the time. Training! Our practices run from 2:30 until 6 or 6:30. Almost all of us work more than one event so we have to schedule our time. We spend alot of time working on stretching, exercises for strength and endurance. We are doing alot of routines a day, after all if you can't do them in practice, you can't do them in a meet either. That was the name of the game all the way for the girls' volleyball team! They had it in all that they did. May it be said ... even down to the last grubby knee pad that made its way to the knee of a competition hungry “volleyballer. The spirit could hardly fail being felt by even the mere passers by at one of the girls' practices. If it wasn't enough to see the faces of determination, the audible screams and shouts should have been enough to convince anyone of the spirit the team had. Although the girls record may not impress the onlooker. Every match the girls lost was really close. So close, in fact, that they could have gone either way. Sue Rathmanner, the team captain, was “proud of the team, and said they really improved over the season. Alot of dedicated sophomores and juniors will carry on the spirit the team had this year. 83 Lynn Jenson wailing for the gun. Girl's Swimming 84 A stomach full of butterflies a humid locker room builds sweat on ready competitors.. .suddenly the shot of a gun cracks the silence and nerves unwind to fully participate in every stroke of every event another P.C. Girls' Swimming Meet is off to a start. The P.C. girls had a much improved season over last year. A team of hard workers put it together for them and the new junior high additions added a lot of talent. Many girls on the team scored high in their events all throughout the season. Coach Ellickson, with regard to the team, was well-pleased with how well they worked. Junior Captain, Linda Niesen, provided the team with good leadership and noted the season as being a fun one. The team all look forward to an even better record next year. With junior high talent being contributed by girls down to the seventh grade the team looks strong for many years to come. With the construction of two arenas (Osseo-Northland) in our area our practice times were all in the afternoon and early evening. Our 11 win-6 loss season was made possible by the contributions of all 23 members of our squad. Even though we usually only played 15 to 17 players. The team was led by our senior members Daryl Harper, Craig Voight, Jeff Nelson, Greg Gilbert, Lee Parkin, John Kahler and Mike Youmans. We ourselves change. How then, can our works and thoughts, if they are always to be the fittest, continue always the same. Change, indeed, is painful, yet ever needful; and if memory has its force and worth, so also has hope. -Carlyle We hope that in the years to come, when you pick this book up and look at it, that it will serve to remind you of the years spent at Park Center. Where our education came not only from books, but through our association with others, and through the friends we made.
