Liotta Striking Individualism Endears Mrs. Hepburn to Students Whether motorcycling into New England to attend an archery conference, zooming to and from school in a jeep, instructing swimming and canoeing, or knitting frantically during her lunch hour on endless pairs of mittens, Mrs. Irene Hepburn is truly one of a kind. A member of the faculty for several years - as girls' physical education instructor for the Board of Cooperative Educational Services — Mrs. Hepburn resides in Colton with her husband Lionel and three of their six children. The staff is indeed proud to dedicate the 1969 PANORAMA to one of the good ones ... MRS. IRENE HEPBURN. Tragic Deaths of Five Young People Shock Local Residents Accident, war, and sudden fatal illness have taken their toll in past years, surely. But when these disasters strike several times in one short year, and all victims are twenty-five years of age or under, the sense of loss is almost unbearable. The Parishville-Hopkinton area lost four young people this past year, and one in the spring of 1967. Roger T. Sylvia was born July 13, 1942. He was physical educa- tion teacher and coach at Parishville for 2 1 2 years. He died May 5, 1968. JERRY ARMSTRONG - 1954-1968 6 Jerry Armstrong was born August 22, 1954. He was a seventh grade student at Parish- ville when he died suddenly after an illness of only one day’s duration, July 3, 1968 Patricia Marie McGill Perkins was born September 17,1943. She graduated from Parishville in 1963. She died in an auto- mobile accident February 22, 1967. Leo Gunning was born February 16, 1947. He was a paratrooper in Vietnam. He died April 4, 1968 trying to save two comrades from enemy fire. He has been awarded the Bronze Star, the Bronze Star Oak Leaf Crest, and the Purple Heart. Nioka Law was born May 17,1952. Through- out her school life, Nioka was active in chorus and Library Club. She died August 22, 1968 after four months illness. NIOKA LAW - 1952-1968 ROGER T. SYLVIA - 1942-1968 7 TO Building Program ’68-'69 notes from the board meeting ... steel for the building expected on or around October 1 ... general contractor anticipates having steel set and building walls erected be- fore the winter season sets in ... 10 acre lot behind the school has to be cleared for construction of playgrounds, football fields ... ... An increase in students from 632 to 652 in two months . . . Possible cut in State Aid ... teacher's 10 aides in the kindergarten .. . Accident insurance rates continue to rise . . . i ... New courses of study ... short- hand, graphics, electricity ... re- vised health curriculum ... junior high exploratory curriculum ... meetings, meetings, meetings. 12 13 ABOVE: The graduates listen intently as one of the speeches was given. BELOW: Mr. Tyler gives the Harrington-Sylvia Award to Dean Harper. 14 Valedictorian, Sharon Hampton, says farewell. Salutatorian, Ruth Miller, gives her speech. As they walked down the aisle with de- liberate slowness, their thoughts went back to those last four years - years filled with memories ... the senior play, Stranger In the Night, and the Junior-Senior Prom, In the Misty Moonlight. After a seemingly short time, it was over. Valedictorian, Sharon Hampton, and Salu- ta torian, Ruth Miller gave their final fare- wells. Diplomas and awards were given out and the class of 1968 walked out without a backward glance. Graduation, 1968 R. Parker and D. Kingsley leads the procession. 15 ADMINISTRATION Mrs. Barrett works busily on report cards. Mr. Maxson, Supervising Principal, ponders a building project. Mr. Kelly with Mr. John Bardin, Supervisor of Elementary Education. 18 Service with a smile is Mrs. Mearkley s motto New Facilities to Encourage New Methods When the new addition is ready for occupancy, the students will be exposed to a rather new method in teaching, Educational Television. Mr. George Tyler, assistant principal said I believe this may be the first operable educational T. V. installation in the North. Certainly this is one of the greatest and most far-reaching in- novations brought to the scene of education in the school system in many years. Mr. Tyler with Mr. Parker looks at the rising of the new addition. Mrs. Grobler enjoys a cup of coffee. Busy Staff Will Be Even Busier in ’69-70 Lyle Hart keeps the school buses in tip-top con dition. KNEELING: J. Bradish. STANDING: M. Wilcox, W. Remington, C. LaBar, J. Garlough, J. Dugan, V. Panthers Win 2, Lose 3 talk with Jim Converse and Paul Snell officials before the Morristown game. This year's football season was one of victory and de- defeat. In two very breathtaking games the Panthers de- feated Morristown and Belleville. Victories were few but spirit and determination remained high throughout the season. The offensive team was named the third highest in the league for the number of points scored. Quarterback Terry Richardson completed 56 out of 119 attempts for a precentage of 47, and a total yardage of 836. Jim Converse, captain, and Steve Bisnett were nam- ed to the St. Lawerence All-Star team, while Richard Snell and Dick Tupper received honorable mention. Coach Richardson best summed up the football squad as a small team but an aggresive team. P.H.C.S. 12 ST. As the Panorama goes to press, the Panthers have nearly completed what has proved to be a rather dis- appointing season, with 4 wins and 5 losses. Panther: defeats were, almost without exception, by narrow margins - often only 1 or 2 points. The team was made up of fine material, and, since approximately one-half will graduate in June, there is a distinct possibility that the '69-'70 team will either equal or surpass the '68- 69 record. Disappointment Marks 1968-69 Season KNEELING: D. Bisnett, Coach Delosh. STANDING: R. Moore, F. Swinyer, D. Woodward, T. Hartson, S. Arquette, Arquette, T. Taylor, C. L. Thomas, R. Thompson, G. Huto, L. Fraser. 44 Despite the loss of key players, the Panthers struggled through a moderately successful season with four wins and six losses under the direction of their new coach Mr. Robert Hall. Although good play was not consistent in all the games, the Pan- thers managed to beat Colton, their biggest rivals, twice. This hadn’t been done since 1967. Terry Richardson led the team in hitting with an average of . 250 while Jim Converse led in pitching with an Earned Run Average of 2.4. Kent Harper and Jim Converse were sfelected to the All-League Second Team as second baseman and outfielder re- spectively. This year’s outlook is brighter because only two players were lost due to graduation and many good players are coming up from the Jr. High Team. Panthers Beat Colts Twice in ’68 J. Converse and D.
