PARISIAN — 1988 Paris High School Paris, Kentucky A LOOK BACK at the people and events that made our year memorable. Just like our forefathers who prepared the Constitution over 200 years ago, Paris High School, founded in 1894, stands tall with heritage, pride and patriotism. Trophies, ribbons, and news media records aH substantiate the “Always with Excellence” motto both in academic and extra-curricular activities that Paris High boasts We. the students of Paris High, salute: our school, our teachers, our administrators, our parents, our community, for our education over the past 94 years! • «V 1 A Look 2 Opening 3 Opening At The People And Events Of 1988 4 Opening Thank Heaven For Teachers And Staff A good teacher and supportive staff are the best things that can be thrust into any situation at any time! They find life full of many trying and unusual situations. Let's look at this select group — they all are a composite of: Courage. Sympathy, Patience, Faith, Hope, and Love. The teachers spend twelve hours a day searching for truth and the other twelve searching for error. These real teachers and staff are expected to have the energy of a harnessed volcano, the efficiency of a calculator, the memory of a computer, the understanding of a psychiatrist, and the diplomacy of an ambassador Then, too, they must be human , always remem- bering — teaching is done by word, but mostly by precept and example! They do not mind sniffles, squirmings. spills, stomach aches, sloth and sauciness. Neither do they disintegrate before tears, trifles, fights, futility, excuses, parents who spout, little boys who shout, and little girls who pout. Best of all they are someone who like someone else's children and still have enough strength left to go to meetings — faculty meetings. Inservice Days, departmental meetings. Booster Meetings, and ball- games. Yes, then there are church meetings, and on and on! Meet- ings, meetings, meetings! Remember, you may retire as a teacher or staff member, but one never retires from teaching. To these indispensible. invincible, and nearly inexhaustible REAL PEO- PLE we salute and say THANK HEAVEN FOR TEACHERS AND STAFF! Academic Team 53 Artistic Endeavors Keep Members Busy The Paris High Art Club had a busy year starting with an aH day field trip to the Berea Arts Crafts Fair. They watched artists and craftsmen display their work as well as demonstrate their artistic skills. Ball- games were an essential part of their year with posters, banners, and face painting for all of the important football and bas- ketball games Three students were chosen to partici- pate in the Governor's Scholars Program in Louisville at the Center for the Arts. A portfolio review was part of the day's pro- gram as well as meeting other high school artists from all over the state of Kentucky. The entire art department participated in three exhibits: a mid year exhibit at the Fine Arts Center, an exhibit and field trip to the Kentucky All-State Exhibit at the University of Kentucky and a year's end exhibit at the Fine Arts Center. They made their presence felt as a club this year and look forward to an even better year in the 1988-89 school year Hard Work Pays Off The Paris High School Parisonnaires had another outstanding year. During Christ- mas they performed at the Christmas concert and also at the Presbyterian Church. They ended their year with their performance af the Baccalaureate ser- vice for the Seniors. Their hard work was well represented in their excellent perfor- mances throughout the year. Pansonnoires 55 Successful And Being in any one of the PHS bands, a member would have experienced quite an enjoyful year. The marching band attended four marching con- tests and came home with one first place trophy, two second place trophies, and one third place trophy. As part of the marching band, under the direction of a former UK drummer, Mr. Grigson, the percussion also won a first place trophy. Then, after the football season was over and the contests in the past, the concert band start- ed preparing for their successful season. In the spring, this band competed in a festival held at the UK Center for the Arts, where they received a superior rating and qualified for state competi- tion held in May. While the concert band practiced diligently, the jazz band also rehearsed for competition. During spring break, they traveled to Florida to win a third place trophy at the Festival of Music held at Sea World. Afterwards, they enjoyed three full days of sun and fun at Daytona Beach. Excited and happy band members proudly display their first place trophy. ) 4 Adcfcng a touch of class to this year's band are the following: Lau- ra Florence, field commander. Not only did we par- ticipate in activities for our own pleasure such as the Christmas party, but we also participated in numerous activities to benefit the school and community. For ex- ample. the Beta Club helped with sched- uling and registration, organized the blood drive, put up the honor board each six weeks and ushered during Baccalaure- ate and Commencement. As the secretary of the 87-’88 Beta Club. I want to challenge the new officers to continue having a successful and ac- tive club. To the graduated seniors. I chal- lenge you to keep reaching for the stars because you can achieve whatever you goal may be! Jannette Courtney Beta officers were: Stephanie Trosper, Vice-President: Lynn Whitson. Treasurer; Jannette Courtney, Secretary, and Chris Haney, President. French Students Learn Through Hands-on Experience The French Club has been one of the active PHS organizations for the 1987-88 school year. The club is comprised of the French I and French II classes. French I students created some imaginative French projects. A full- scaled French flag, a literary piece performed in French, a French comic strip and other cre- ative works displayed the talent of the French I students. On the other hand, the expertise of the second year students was displayed solely in French cooking. The club rounded out the year with a festive French dinner. Some of the com- munity service projects included providing a Thanksgiving dinner for a needy family, contributing food to the Community Food Basket and selling Buckle Hug Valentines for the Scholarship Project. One of the highlights of the year was the FHA week celebration, February 7th through the 13th. Daily activities were planned that involved the FHA members as well as the entire school These events included a red and white day. during which the members wore red and white clothing; a teacher appreciation day. teachers were presented with red and white carnations, member appreciation day. included a balloon send off and a 50's day with prizes awarded for best cos- tumes. Other projects during the year that pro- vided services to the school was sponsor- ing a pep bus to the Richmond-Madison football game and purchasing magazine subscriptions for the library. One of our goals the members enjoy working on most is to promote wholesome recreation. In order to achieve this goal we planned fun and exciting projects. Earlier this year we celebrated Christmas with a potluck dinner and party with the FBI A Club. During the second semester, other than FHA week fun. we journeyed to Kings Island. Ohio for a full day of food. fun. and frolic. The 1987-88 school year's accomplish- ments for the FHA members culminated in the Spring Banquet where new officers were installed in a candlelight ceremony while family, friends, and faculty looked on. All in all. FHA has been very successful in fulfilling its purposes this year and looks forward to greater success next year Service Club Will Be Missed Sadly, due to lack of student In- terest. the Teens Who Care Club disbanded this year. After state support was withdrawn eight years ago. all other clubs statewide dis- solved. leaving PHS the only school in the State to carry on. Over the years the club has done a lot to help the local community and the world community. Both will miss this service club. Mr Barrese and club members provided Halloween entertain- ment for the community chil- dren. 64 Teens Who Care Auto mechanics, machine shop and nurs- ing assistant programs are popular with the Paris High students who attend the Clark County Vocational School. This year, James Long, Ronnie Scott, Clinton Townsend, Jeff Whalen, Danny Correll, Lisa Turner, Paul Thornsburg, Michelle Woods, Jeff Vickers, Jeff Bailey and Rob Rhinesmith made the trip every day. First year students learned to write Feature. Sports, News and Editorial articles efficiently, and the second year students en- hanced their style of writing and interviewing tech- niques. Together, these stu- dents effectively addressed student and faculty inter- ests. Staff Meets Superior Challenge Head-On The challenge to make a better yearbook for the stu- dent body awaits a new editor each year — and Editor Dana Himes met the challenge head-on, said sponsor Mrs. Richard. The 1988 staff tackled the theme idea, the schedul- ing of pictures, the dedication and meeting deadlines with enthusiasm. Securing enough money through ads and book sales is a monumental task. Each staff member wanted a superior book and met the challenge head-on. The staff extends a thanks to Robert Wilkirson for his artis- tic help in designing the cover. Although the squad encoun- tered numerous injuries and faced tough competition, they pulled through on top with the 1st place over-all trophy, best optional cheer, and best pom- pon routine. This qualified the squad to compete in the Re- gional Competition. All A Classic Champions Award winning routine PVC Lisa Linville, Lynn Whitson. Stephanie Trosper. Deanne Humphrey. Marijohn Finley. Practices began on June 21st and pro- gressed steadily throughout the year. Mr. Jones had this to say about his new team, Fan- tastic first year. We were lucky to have so many athletically talented seniors on the team, considering they had no expe- rience . Apparently experience played no part in this year's season. The soccer team had a successful season despite its youth. This year's team mem- bers were reluctant to join the team because of this being the sport's first season, yet, they did very well. Good luck to Coach Jones and his soccer team in the years to come! Young Golfers Gain Experience This year our golf team was very young. Our first five golfers consisted of a Junior (Steven Henry), two Sophomores (Clay Sturgeon, Wesley Tipton), a Freshman (Kevin Berryman), and two seventh grad- ers (David Norman, Mike Whitson). Even though we did not win as many matches as we would have liked, our scores improved as the year progressed. We were led by Steven Henry, who not only led us in scoring but also in years of experience. If the young men continue to work at their golf game the future of Paris High School golf looks very promising. David Norman. Bret Klyza. Mike Whitson. Matt Galbreth. Wesley Tipton. Shawn Sparks. Steve Quigley and Dusty Cummins were booked to replace some big shoes in the areas of hitting, field- ing and pitching. Robert Puckett helped to shore up the pitching and Greg Earlywine added some punch in the line-up as a lead off hitter. The final regular season found the Greyhounds standing at 9 wins and 14 losses. Brett Eades re- corded a record of 6 wins and 2 losses. Brett also led the Hounds in hitting at 441 followed by Will Brophy at 415, Dusty Cummins at 410 and Greg Earlywine at an even 400.
