P.H.S. Is A School With Staff Honors Mrs. Carolyn Brannock The Parisian staff did not have to search very far to find the perfect recipient for the 1987 yearbook dedication. Mrs. Brannock has devoted the last nine years of her eleven to the teaching profession here at Paris High School. She possesses the traits of a super teacher — courage, sympathy, patience, faith, hope and love. A more dedicated teacher would be hard to find. She teaches Algebra II, geometry, trigo- nometry and pre-calculus. She acquired her B.S. degree from Georgetown College. She is the sponsor of the Junior-Senior prom and always makes this a very special and memorable night for the students. She is very supportive and helpful to both the students and faculty. It is with great pleasure that we, the Pari- sian staff, recognize this outstanding faculty member and dedicate the 1986-1987 year- book to Mrs. Carolyn Brannock. No matter what the '87 Seniors choose to pursue in life hereafter, they will always remember their secondary education as one of the greatest steps in their stairway of life, and they can forever maintain that distinct individuality of being The Paris High School Class of 1987. The time has come for us, as a class, to go our separate ways, for we have come to the end of an era, an era in which we have shared the failures and frustrations and the glory and grandeur that comes with any progression in life. This first major step of our lives is now only a part of our past; still, whatever lies ahead remains a part of the indistinct future. We have now reached that level which many consider the end of the begin- ning of our lives and the beginning of the rest of our lives as we are momentarily poised on the landing in between. We will always be grateful for our education at Paris High School, and we are sure that it is synonymous with a highly successful future. May God's blessings follow the Class of '87 as we continue our climb toward success. They must win their share of spirit sticks, by decorating the halls and yelling the loudest to prove themselves. This often requires some late night painting sessions and some early arrivals at school. This year the classes competed with each other by meeting at night to prepare their best display of posters and banners and to see which class could have the largest number of participants. It all proved to highten the spirited tradition at PHS and continue to say we are a school with class. 28 29 Darrell Rankin Chuck Redwine 30 Mark Richardson Donna Shriver Shelly Richardson David Smart Sean Scott Clay Sousley ■ P.H.S. — Small But Mighty 1 1 Seniors Relax During Lunch Break SHOINOf Juniors Officers Stephanie Trosper Ouida Wess Chris Jones Jessica Harrington Chris Haney Donnie Baber Jeff Bailey Mike Bannister Roshina Bates Matt Becraft Crystal Bills Maceo Bishop Stephanie Bishop Antonio Blanton Gerald Brown Tracey Cameron Chris Carpenter Scott Carpenter Brent Chumbley Jennifer Cole Trevis Conner Jannette Courtney Dusty Cummins LaTonya Cunningham Angela Dykes 34 Pam Franklin Johanna Fullmer McClellan Gaines John Gay Melinda Geddings Kelli Gray Chris Haney Shanda Harrell Holli Harrill Jessica Harrington Larry Harris Jason Hayes Shanda Hersey Dana Himes Chad Hudnall Lana Hutchison Michele Jackson Chris Jones Rachel Jones James Kechter Jackie Kennon Gary Lawrence Mike Laythen James Long Ernie Lucky Michelle Mann James Marks Nancy McCracken Steven McWhorter Melissa Mitchell 35 Buffy Nutter Rayburn Nutter Barry Parsons Holly Pate Lori Pierce Yolanda Poston Steve Quigley Rodney Ratliff Robby Rhinesmith E.W Roe Chris Scott Hutch Sherman Helen Shriver Archi Smith Rob Snapp Shawn Sparks Stephanie Trosper Lisa Turner Jeff Vickers Robert Wagoner Sarah Webb Quida Wess Jeff Whalen Lynn Whitson Robert Wilkinson Eric Williams Michelle Woods Sophomore Officers Bobby Mason Joey Ray Kim Parker Jeff Reese Will Brophy David Adams Chris Adkins Tony Asbury Kim Baber Sherese Badgelt Angela Bell Amy Berry William Brophy Erika Burden Jeff Christopher Frank Clay Daniel Correll Tina Craycraft Johnathan Cunningham Mike Duff Brett Eades Blair Eads Greg Earlywine Laura Earlywine Tina Endris Joe Fister Tracy Frederick Amy George Cindy Harris Lora Hawkins Todd Hawkins Steven Henry Lucretia Henson Rhonda Hill Scott Hitchings Quentin Honican Peggy Hopkins Michael Horton Deanna Humphrey Chris Humphrey Dawson Johnson Shannon Johnson Maurice Marks Jennifer Marshall Robert Mason Julie Maybrier Dana McCarty Kim McCarty Angela McWhorter William Morris Sheila Mullins Kim Parker Kim Pendygraft Eddie Pike Connie Ray 39 Holly Ray Joey Ray Jeff Reese Shannon Rhinesmith Lavonne Rogers Blair Rule Harry Sargent Renee Schietz Ronnie Scott Barbara Thomas Dwayne Thomas Kevin Tipton Wesley Tipton John Turner Keith Turner John Vance Karla Wagoner Olivia Warfield Robert Waugh John Weaver Nicole West Christa Whitaker Stacy White Steve Wilkirson Derrick Williams Heather Vazell 40 Ronald Adams Stephen Alfred Jacquen Allen Ricky Baber Greg Baker Melissa Barlow Jerry Barnes Shanay Barnes Shannon Bauman Chris Blake Stacey Blume Erica Bolling Chris Boshears Lisa Bramel Lara Brown Yolanda Brown Louis Browning LeeAnn Brunner Timothy Buckner Duane Bullock Freshman Officers Lisa Linville Amie Stocker Yolanda Brown William Wells 42 Tommy Burden Stena Burke Kara Carpenter Lynne Casebier Royce Christopher Michael Copher David Courtney Chad Davis Kimberly Day John Devary Travis Earlywine Denny Edwards Daniel Elam Michele Evans Marijohn Finley Shawn Fomas Tammy Gay Mathew Gieselman William Gillispie Michelle Goins Thomas Greene Tamika Grigsby Deborah Harris Melissa Harris Charles Harwell Brian Hawkins Manny Helms J.K. While the majority of the school populous wished for sunny skies during spring break to get a head- start on their suntan, the P.H.S. band members went north to see the Big Apple and Canadian sun- sets. The trip was financed by the an- nual turkey dinner, Christmas tree, calendar, fruit and cookie sales. Halftime routines continued to be impressive during the football season and support was given to the basketball teams. Their annual Christmas and Spring Concerts were artistic and entertaining. The band, under the direction of Mr. Phil Grigson, attended the K.MEA Music Festival at the Uni- versity of Kentucky and of course received an Excellent rating. Band officers for the year were: freshman, Lisa Linville; sopho- more, Amy Berry; junior, Michelle Mann; senior, Daina Coons. 49 Entertainment At Its Best The Parisonnaires added a touch of class to the 1986-87 school year with singing engage- ments, especially around the Christmas season. They sang at the annual PHS Christmas con- cert and at the Bourbon Heights Nursing Home. Another tradi- tional engagement was the Bacca- laureate for the Senior class. This group was well balanced and de- served all the praise it was given for its efforts. Top right, Mrs. Doris McFarland provides the piano accompaniment while Mr. Phil Grigson, left, works with two young men. The entire group practiced long hours to make their numbers the best in listening music. A fruit juice vending machine, first requested by PHS athletes last school year, has been installed on a trial basis through Student Council efforts. Council Tackles Student Concerns Student concerns were the main topics of discussion by the Student Council in monthly meetings held the first period of the second Wednesday. Officers were; Sean Marler, President; Chris Haney, Vice-President; and Chuck Redwine, Secretary-Treasurer. Topics dealt with during the year included attempts to obtain an orange juice vending machine; Detention Hall; smoking in the restrooms; discipline problems; grading procedures; ballgame ticket prices, student I.D. cards; and pay phone accessibility. The United Way Campaign, chosen as the Commu- nity Service Project, was given $240 which was collect- ed from Paris Elementary, Middle and High Schools. Mr. Jerry Fornoff, Campaign Chairman, was compli- mentary of the results. Coached by Mr. Jim Jones, the team followed the previ- ous year's tradition in their participation in the grueling Thoroughbred League of Lex- ington, consisting of such powerhouses as Bryan Sta- tion, Henry Clay, Tates Creek, George Rogers Clark and the two time state cham- pion and nationally ranked Lafayette. The academic team also competed in Scholastic Challenge and In the Know and hosted this year's Gover- nor's Cup District competi- tion, where Sean Marler and Clay Sousley captured second place in their divisions and Gerald Brown placed a strong third. The quick-witted TV team was comprised of team captain Sean Marler, Clay Sousley, and Sean Scott with alternate Chris Jones and many talented young rookies. 52 Beta's Initiate Ten New Members. Holding its annual spring induction, the Beta Club tapped ten new members. Upholding its motto We lead by serving others, the club staged a very successful blood drive, receiv- ing 39 pints from the student body. They continued to help by working the Honor Board, serving as ushers at graduation, and serving as guides at the open house and at freshman orien- tation. The annual French projects were especially creative this year. Holli Harrill brought the Louvre to Room 203 since the class could not visit the museum in Paris. Her model featured one of the grand galler- ies of the Louvre in which is housed the Mona Lisa. The Galleries Lafayette had nothing over on Yolanda Poston who created her own boutique complete with miniature coat hangers and French price tags and labels. She brought a bit of France to Room 203. French cuisine is an area several students ex- plored in their French projects. Among other foods prepared were French bread and chocolate mousse. Some students prepared quiche and French candies. The entire French class tasted the various dishes prepared. France Comes To Room 203 Exciting Year For Speech Joey Ray Excells In Declamation As president of the speech club and a member of the National Forensic League, Joey has done superior work in dramatic interpretation, poetry and declamation. He won second place in the Harrison County speech tournament, third place in the Lexington Catholic High tourney, and second place in the Bourbon County essay contest on conservation. During the 1986-87 school year, the Speech Club has been very active. They participated in seven speech tournaments, including the regional and state meets. Joey Ray consistently won first and sec- ond place trophies in Declamation, Inter- pretation of Prose and serious Interpreta- tion of Drama. Melissa Barlow won a second place trophy in Declamation. All the members gained experience and points which count toward membership and ad- vanced degrees in the National Forensic League. Joey Ray participated in the State Tournament after qualifying at the Re- gional Tournament. Some members manned the talking Christmas tree at Ken's Super Value. Two groups presented programs at the Profes- sional and Business Women's Club and the Methodist Men's Group. It has been an exciting year. Some of the highlights included volunteering at the Bourbon Heights senior citizens home (all members visited at least twice and many continued to visit throughout the year), selling Buckle Hug Valentines for Muscular Dystrophy, contributing money to the State FHA Scholarship fund, and purchasing magazine sub- scriptions for the Home Economics department. Some of the more entertaining activities included celebrating Christmas with a combination; FBLA FHA potluck luncheon and FHA week — kicking things off with a balloon release, teacher appreciation day Highlights Year with flowers to all teachers and staff. Red and White day, senior day with all seniors receiving pinwheel candy compliments of FHA, and member appreciation day with a potluck luncheon. The finale for this year was a trip to Kings Island on May 23rd. This all day excursion was both educational and entertaining. All in all, FHA had a very successful and fun year! The staff and sponsor, Mrs. Mary Dickerson worked hard each month to produce a quality paper. The caliber of staff was evident in the Mark of Excellence competi- tion with the four placements. The class also had a 15 minute broadcast each week on WRPZ tell- ing about our school activities. Congratulations on another pro- ductive year. A great deal of hard work and time, as can be seen by the pictures on this page, go into preparing an annual that captures a year of memories, sports competitions, and club activities. Everyone takes part in some phase of preparing the book, from choosing the cover to drawing the pages, to identifying pictures, to writing articles. As you look back at the 1986-87 school year, we hope we were able to capture some of the fond memories you had at PHS. 66 At right, Doris types over the senior accomplishments for about the fifth time! Business With Class Traveling to Northern Kentucky University March 21 for regionals was a very rewarding trip for both Rene Conyers and Eddie Pike. Here they are shown displaying their regional trophies. Both Conyers and Pike received first place awards in their events. After a very successful fund rais- er, everyone at PHS knows what a gummy bear is. Shown here is FBLA sponsor, Sharon Fields dis- tributing the gummy bears to members of the club. The FBLA officers are as follows: Ouida Wess, President Helen Shriver, Vice Pres. Jessica Herrington, Sec. Todd Earlywine, Treasurer Tammy Griffin, Reporter Donna Shriver, Parliamentarian. Competitive Members Show Skills Business with Class” was the perfect theme for PHS's FBLA club this year. The theme came through with very rewarding and prosperous re- sults. The FBLA club started off their year with a fund raiser for members to attend both regional and state meetings by selling gummy bears. At Christmas time, FBLA joined in with FHA to have a potluck dinner for all members of both clubs. The regionals were well represented by Rayburn Nutter for penmanship, Christa Whitaker for Typ- ing I, Lisa Duncan for Typing II, Rene Conyers for Word Processing, Nancy Jolly for Office Proce- dures, Eddie Pike for Entrepreneurship I, Todd Earlywine for Accounting II, and Steve McWhorter for Accounting I. Sharae Porter and Helen Shriver served as voting delegates. Out of the regionals came two first place winners — Rene Conyers and Eddie Pike. These two went on to state in Louisville in April. At state, Conyers and Pike went through vigorous competitive events, although no winner came out of the events, it ended a very successful year for FBLA. This year members of the art club participated in the Third An- nual Kentucky All State High School Art Exposition held at East- ern Kentucky University. Entering from P.H.S. were: Shelia Dodge, photo; Amy George, print in mixed media; Eddie Fryman, graphics; Mike Wells, photo; Clay Sturgeon, charcoal sketch; and Melody Cle- mons, pen and ink drawing. The club members also attended an art show at Morehead Universi- ty where they were able to join with the art groups represented and re- ceive some valuable hands-on expe- rience. The club wishes its sponsor, Mr. Matt Prichard, the best in his new job. Athletes Strive For More In the past year, FCA (Fellowship of Christian Athletes) has been involved in several different events. For example, the FCA group at Paris High School held a meeting where the students of the Nicholas County FCA group attended. The foremost event for this year was the Weekend of Champions. During this time, students from surrounding colleges visited and spoke to the students from PHS, BCHS, NCHS, and anyone who wished to attend. The college students also got involved with the churches in the area. During this weekend, many people thought about Christ, and some made him their life. In FCA, which meets every other Wednesday night at 8:00 p.m., the group discusses a topic and how that relates to the students lives in Christ. These meetings are often accompanied with refreshments. 71 A New Club On Campus A chess club was or- ganized for the first time this year. Mr. Barrese was the sponsor. Much interest in chess was generated throughout the school. So much so that plans are underway to form a team next year which will compete against other schools. The winners of the stu- dent chess tournament were John McFarland, 3rd place; Mike Wells, 2nd place; and Paul Lit- tle, 1st place. They had a final scoring total of 263 points while holding their opponents to 152. PHS coaches require from every player a great deal of hard work, long hours of practice, and that ever necessary mental preparation needed to make a player and team successful. The 1986 team was no exception and rallied to the call of their coaching staff, proving they could be one of the best teams in the state. The team roster sported 64 names this year with 14 of them being seniors. We salute you and say goodbye to Paul Little, James Cason, Lanie Fomas, Pete English, Chuck Redwine, Mike McMahon, Eric Steward, Mark Richardson, Phillip Humphrey, Billy Mitchell, David Smart, Raymond Chenault, Clyde Marks, and James Landrum. The team posted impressive victories over top 20 teams such as Clark Co., Madison Central, Dixie Heights and Rowan County. The team was predominantly led by six seniors that were all an asset in the team's success. They were helped by a number of talented underclassmen. In 1987, we bid farewell to three such faculty members: Lee Johnson, Coach Randy Reese, and Matt Prichard. Mr. Johnson was not only a teacher at Paris High but a graduate of this school. He is a truly outstanding teacher who exhibited his concern for the individual student. He will be greatly missed. Coach Randy Reese has established i himself as one of the premier coaches in the state of Kentucky. His leader- ship at Paris High has made this foot- ball program one of renown. Although Matt Prichard was head of the Paris High Art Department for only one year, his contributions were many. His expertise has helped to es- tablish an even greater art depart- ment. We wish him the best in his future endeavors. 95 Seniors Add Their ADAMS. MELISSA - FHA 1. 2, 3. 4 ALLEN. RAYLYNN - Art 2. 4; FHA 2, 3. 4. These values are as necessary today as they were when this country was but a dream. For they are what made the dream come true. They are the professions of life.
