5cV °° In order to meet the challenges, the traditions of PHS provided the neces- sary growth and stability. Time was spent both alone and with friends creating memories that will someday be the best years of our lives. From the challenges of high school came the satisfaction of an achieve- ment learned through perserverence and determination. From these achievements came the confidence to face the chal- lenges of the future. ?an - April Banks Noel Bowman Derek Brooks Tyrone Brown Psst — what did you get for number four. God saw fit to call Tina, her mother, two sisters and nephew home on December 26, 1985. To dare, to take risks, to bear uncertainty, to endure tension — they are the es- sence of the play spirit which Tina possessed on the basketball floor. She was a genuine friend wjio showed love and com- passion to all with whom she came in contact. As the senior class turns toward memory lane, we will remember her thoughts, her smiles, her words, and her deeds. Our thoughts are echoed as a friend states, I don't understand why what happened had to be, but my last words to you are, rest peacefully. 7 r r Presiden t’s Message As graduation draws near, a smile can be seen on the faces of some Seniors, while others may be seen shedding tears. It is the realization that a long-tread path is about to end that evokes such emo- tional displays. The path has been a winding one for each Senior, progressing from valley to mountain and back again, all the while teetering between fire and a foreboding precipice. This path now seems, at long last, to be short and true, but lo and behold, as the path shortens, it steepens! So, as fate would have it, the climb has just begun. How we fare along the way will determine the unique quality that sets us apart and, hopefully, above all the others. We have an excellent start, how- ever, and we plan to succeed! May the future be bright for each of t . May God bless the class of '86, and may He keep watch over all our endeav- ors. Personnel Because of Paris High School's low enrollment, the faculty spends a lot of time helping students individually. They teach enthusiastically even through the frustrations and problems of snow days and KEST monitoring. Teaching today is a challenge and our faculty dares to rise to every occasion. 28 Staff Honors Mr. Crain With Dedication The Parisian Staff would like to dedicate its 198o yearbook to an individual who is a supportive and dedicated faculty member who has devoted the last 8 years of his 23 to teaching at Paris High School. Professionally he completed his BA degree at Huntington Col- lege. his Masters at Ball State University, and his Rank I in Administration at Morehead State University. He is an excellent teacher both in the classroom and on the basketball court. He has accumulated a record of 132 wins and 93 losses for the basketball team. His wit and sense of humor is unmatched in our school. It is with sincere appreciation of the many hours of service to our school, students, and community, that we, the Parisian Staff, dedicate our 198o yearbook to Mr. Mark Crain. Just one of his more intense moments. Quality in, quality out! Paris Board Of Education Mr. Thomas Si wick i, Mr. Robert Wilkerson, Mr. El wood Parker, Mr. Thomas Skeen, Chairman; Mrs. Ted Wiseman. Superin tenden t Mr. Ronald Chumbley Ironic, that the space shuttle 'Challenger' should be consumed in fire while this fine class is prepar- ing to spring upon the world in the Challenging Years' ahead. Christa McAuliffe, an educator, was pursuing the frontier of space. You, as students, are crossing the threshold of secondary education and embarking on your own quest for fulfillment. Your journey will be fraught with the challenges of un- certainty, despair, and weariness. Yet like the Phoe- nix, you must conquer those challenges and rise to the quality of life you desire. Diligence and determi- nation will lift you to your star. Mrs. Macie Lawson has been a most faithful and dedicated secretary in the superintendent's office of the Paris Independent School System for the past 23 years. She came here from Lewisburg in Logan County. Upon her retirement in July, she plans to trav- el and spend more time with her volunteer work, which shows what a wonderful lady she is. Accountant Mrs. Alma Boardman Secretary Mrs. Helen S win ford 32 Mrs. Elizabeth Scott Rank I, University of Kentucky Counselor The 1985-86 school year brought the resignation of Mrs. Elizabeth Scott, Paris High Schools counselor for 23 years. Mr. Goins commented that she was extremely helpful to the young people, and he feels it will be difficult to schedule and work without her. She spent a lot of her time helping young people on a one-to- one basis, which is the most effective. Wnen asked what she will miss most about Paris High School, Mrs. Scott replied, 'The children. Well, Mrs. Scott, we hope that you have many fond memo- ries of Paris High. You have truly been an excellent addition to our school. The band has been working very diligently on fund raisers for the trip they hope to take sometime next year. They have held the an- nual turkey dinner, the auction, and a car wash. They have also sold numerous items such as cookies, fruit, calendars, and stuffed ani- mals. They participated in the Bicen- tennial celebration by combining with the Bourbon County band and marching in the parade. The band has competed in several marching contests and did very well, which they hope will continue in the fu- ture. 39 Parisonnaires Entertain At Christmas Rene Conyers, Sheila Dodge, Susan Kaufman, Mr. Phil Crigson, Mrs. Grigson, Lisa Casebier, Pam Plum- mer, Seana Paul, Jennifer Cole, Mi- chelle Mann, Nancy McCracken, Amy Berry, Shanda Harrill, Melinda Geddings, Tonya Hayes, Frank Clay, Chris Jones, Chris Vance, Mike Lu- ther, Robert Snapp, Brad Case, Chris- tie Hollon, Becky Mitchell, Kelly Gray, Kim Baber The Parisonnaires were busy as usual at Christmas this year. Mrs. Lelia Henry is Sponsor. Mike Pack, President; Dana Coons, Secre- tary-Treasurer; and Chuck Redwine, Vice- President. 41 Paris High's academic team took on some new di- mensions this year, as they went far beyond regular television competition on Scholastic Challenge and In the Know. The quick recall team, composed of Mike Pack, Mike Young, and team captain Eric Chumbley, dropped their opener on Scholastic Challenge, and were 1-1 on In the Know. The team also entered the Thoroughbred League and competed against several Lexington schools, George Rogers Clark, Madison Central, and Montgomery County. The team's number was increased by one in this format and that spot was ably filled by the team alternates, Sean Marler, Chris Jones, Chris Haney, Stephanie Trosper and Mike Jones. Though the team did not set the league on fire, they had a respectable beginning. Eric Chumbley, Mike Young, Mike Pack, Mrs. Dickerson, Mrs. Henry, Stephanie Trosper, Mike Jones, Sean Marler, Chris Haney But the program was expanded in many more directions. Again, Paris High sent a team to the Academic Decathlon to compete in various written exams, and again they finished high in the ranks. Mike Pack, Mark Crain, Lisa Casebier, Lee Ingram, Eric Chumbley, Pat Turpin, Mike Jones, Donna Shriver, Mrs. Dickerson Academics To The Front Please In state-wide competition, the journalism depart- ment competed in the first Sweet 16 Academic Showcase. Pictured at left are the winners and their proud parents: Nancy Kaufman, Holly Ferrell, Eric Chumbley, Mr. Mrs. Chumbley, Dr. Mrs. Fer- rell, Mr. Mrs. Young, and Mike Young. A team also ventured to the first Gover- nor's Cup District Competition, similar to the Academic Decathlon in which the quick recall team finished second, Mike Young took first in language arts competition; Stephanie Trosper finished third in English composition, and Sean Haight finished third in math. All in all, the '85-86 academic season was fruitful for the Paris squad, and the team will miss its former coach, Mrs. Mary Dick- erson as Mr. Jim Jones has taken the helm for 1986-87. The activities of both Latin I and Latin II help with the understanding of the Eng- lish language. French I II The French Club studied French cul- ture throughout the year and our study was enhanced by the fact that some of the French Club members plan to travel to Europe in the summer. The first meeting was highlighted by an inspiring report from Sharae Porter and Daina Coons as they reviewed their trip to the Summer National Conference at Black Mountain, North Carolina. In March the huddle groups from the University of Kentucky and George- town College shared their testimo- nies in a joint meeting with newly established huddles from Nicholas County and MMI high schools. April Brought the Tom Landry banquet to Lexington and seven lucky members were fortunate enough to attend the meeting and hear this fantastic man talk about his relationship with God. Coaches Bel- linger and Reese had the great for- tune of escorting Coach Landry while he was in Lexington and gained some real insight into his life as a Christian Coach and shared this with the hud- dle. Finally, the huddle wished their senior huddle members well as they treated them to a night of fun, bumps, and bruises as they traveled to the Lexington Ice Center for a night of falls and skating with em- phasis on falls. 61 PHS Golf Team Frank Clay, Steven Henry, Jason Hayes, and David Henry look on as Coach Goode gives some advice. 1986 PHS Golf Team Record 4 14 Mason Co. — L 4 17 Scott Co. — L 4 19 Henry Clay Inviational Tourn. — 32nd 4 23 Montgomery Co. — L 4 28 Bourbon Co. — W; Clark Co. — W 5 1 Bourbon Co. — W; Pendleton Co. — L; Scott Co. — L 5 5 Bourbon Co. — W; Bryan Station — W; Montgomery Co. — L 5 7 Pendleton Co. — L 5 10 Tates Creek Invitational Tourn. — 13th 5 12 Mason Co. — L 5 21 Harrison Co. — L 5 23 Woodford Co. — L; Lafayette — L 5 27 REGIONAL TOURN. — 18th At left, David Keding and David Henry both show excellent form. 63 Miss Nancy Miss Kim Woosley Miss Holly Ferrell Kaufman Homecoming Princesses were Seana Paul, Yvonne Cummins, Renee Conyers, Dana Coons, Shanda Harrill, Lynn Whitson, Rachael Jones, Tonya Hayes, Nicki West, Angie Bell, Erica Bur- den and Jenny Eads. 64 Miss English Wins Title Friday, September 27, was another page in the history of Paris High School as it was the 1985 Homecoming. The Hounds went up against Nicho- las County and led 14-7 at halftime when the cere- monies began. A hush came over the crowd as the procession onto the field ended. Mr. Goins handed the sealed envelope containing the name of the 1985 Home- coming Queen to Mr. Jones, the master of ceremo- nies. The band played a 5-second drumroll which seemed like eternity while everyone waited for the announcement. Finally, it was made and Miss Sherri English was crowned 1985 Homecoming Queen of Paris High. Sherri is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ron Eng- lish. She has been a cheerleader for four years and belongs to the FBLA. Sherri plans to attend EKU and major in Fashion Design. Mr. Goins crowned Sherri, and was assisted by Mrs. Kay Clay who was escorted by her husband, Mr. Doug Clay. Mr. and Mrs. Clay are the parents of the late Carrie Clay who was the 1984 Homecom- ing Queen. Her senior court consisted of Holly Ferrell, Nan- cy Kaufman, and Kim Woosley. Region 10 run- ner-up team from a year ago. The first major challenge the Hounds faced was the confronta- tion with No. 1 Scott County. As the Cardinals stepped into South- side gymnasium they had no doubt of knowing they would be a part of the biggest upset in the history of P.H.S. The cool play of the five new starters gleemed as well as the fina- le of Mark Allen Crain's last sec- ond shot. As the season progressed the challenge grew tougher, the first game with rival Bourbon County proved sour, but the all A classic brought yet another challenge, that of class “A dominance. With the month of January near, and the tough part of the schedule to arise, the twin tower combina- tion of Juniors Chuck Redwine and Clyde Marks combined to help pull the Hound through the month on top. They ended the season with a 17- 12 record. The Lady Hounds were able to successfully meet these goals by re- cording a 13-10 record and spliting four games with Bourbon Co. and winning the only decision against Harrison County. In the nine other games, the Lady Hounds played against 10th region opponents, their record was 7-2. With the tragic loss of senior Lady Hound, Tina Hutsell, the team dedicated the season in her memory and pulled more strongly together to meet their goals. The Lady Hounds ended the sea- son with a disappointing loss to Bourbon Co. in overtime during the 1st round of district tourna- ment. It was a hard fought game with a heartbreaking loss. The Lady Hounds met the challenge, only to come up two points short on a last second shot. With four starters returning and key players from the bench, the Lady Hounds will meet the chal- lenge again and have an even more successful season next year. At far right, players get some last minute instructions from coaching staff. The 1986 Greyhound baseball squad delt yet another fine season as they wrapped up another glorious 14-6 record behind the first year coaching of Wallis Brooks. The Hounds had many fine perfor- mances. An early 7-4 victory over the Harri- son Co. Thorobreds in the second game of the year was an undoubtable ' feather in the cap'' for the Greyhounds. With this victory the Hounds just let it roll, as they won their next 5 out of 6 games, one being a fine, no hitter pitching performance of Junior, Pete English, over Knott Co. Central, along with an impressive win over Henry Clay. With these two games the Hounds became defi- nite contenders. With fine weather forcasted the Hounds met rival Bourbon County where the Grey- hounds blanked the Colonels 11-5 behind the strike-out pitching performance of Max Castle. This too helped pace the Hounds through fine victories over Bryan Station, Lexington Catholic, as well as Scott County. The Greyhound success rolled on as the Hounds advanced to the district finals after downing none other than rival Bourbon Co. This automatically projected the Hounds to the region, but fate struck as the Grey- hounds met a tough Montgomery Co. squad. Scoreboard Clark Co. Prom Enjoyed By All The Junior-Senior Prom held on the evening of April 18, was based on the Cinderella theme, Til' the Stroke of Midnight. Cinderella's glass slipper proved re- warding for senior Sherri English as she was crowned Queen and the handsome Greg Harp was crowned Prince. The fairy godmothers of the prom, Carolyn Brannock, Janice Cox, Beverly Wujcik, and the galant king Larry Kline- felter, were the patient junior sponsors who helped the juniors coordinate their theme. At the stroke of midnight, their formal attire did not turn into rags, and every- one left the Junior-Senior Prom hoping someday they would meet their Prince or Cinderella. With the tragic accident of the spaceship Challenger and the loss of a great educator, Christa McAuliffe our theme took on greater dimensions. As the class of '86 prepares for its final walk in the halls of high school they can reflect on a most significant year in their lives. At 8:00 o'clock on Thursday, May 29, 1986 a new challenge just began for 56 seniors. 120
