All of these are of great im- portance. As you leave us, I trust that this process started at Paris High School will enable you to make de- cisions that will improve your life as well as that of others around you. J. Dickerson It is said that A little knowledge is a dangerous thing. Research studies indicate that the amount of knowledge one must obtain to keep pace in a rapidly moving society doubles every five years. This fi- gure illustrates the fact that learn- ing must continue long after one's formal school education comes to an end. For this reason the impor- tance of developing a high level of self-discipline leading to sound learning practices cannot be over- emphasized. L. While there are many facets of our public secondary education in the United States that needs improving, we here at Paris High School take pride in the fact that we never lost what many schools are clambering to regain. We are indeed fortunate that the Paris City Schools' administration, faculty and staff did not abdi- cate their responsibility and never left the basics. Crain Most people would succeed in small things if they were not troubled with great ambitions. Crain Success in life cannot be measured by material gain, but rather, a feeling of satisfaction deep within. J. Cox Only a person with a healthy, positive attitude can enjoy true success. Toadvine There is no thread of life so narrow that seperates those who are successful from those who are not. Crain Success is determined by self-discipline, hard work and divine guidance. K. Roseberry Success is measured not in the eyes of the beholder, but by the person who enjoys it. Toadvine Success requires no explanations. Crain Success is character in action. Crain Be willing to risk failure in order to succeed. Crain Machiaveli (Italian 1469-1527) said that he noticed often that the reason for a man's success depended on his ability to match his conduct to the times. Never set your goals low; but high; in order to have something to reach and attain something of which to be proud. — Rankin 38 Faculty Parisian staffers learned that time often mooes too swiftly as they worked on A Pace Against Zhe Calendar. Working on the Parisian staff could be compared to the shaky plot of a noonday soap opera. Things are seldom calm or rational. Once a set of obstacles is overcome, another set of hurdles is erected. So it was with the 1984 Parisian staff. Early in September the pressure was on to organize and produce a journalistic yearbook that would tell the story of another school year. Together the staff decided to use a theme which showed how Paris moves in its many directions through academic challenges and sport competitions in a year of success.” Once the minor decisions of pa- per quality and print style were de- termined, the gigantic argument over the cover design and its color followed. Next came picture scheduling for the seniors and the underclassmen. This is no easy task as someone always conveniently forgets. As spring approached a club and sports day was set up — with a long plea for ”ol' Sol to shine brightly on the appointed day. Stories and pictures were scruti- nized before completion. Page de- signs were sketched and res- ketched. As the pages were finished and packed for the trip to the print- er everyone checked the calendar to 40 Vearbook Deadlines Jn see if the package would make the deadline. The staff worked long hours to give the book a refreshing look. We hope you enjoy it. Whether you are a freshman, an alumnus, or faculty member or just someone who by chance opened this book, the contents are devoted to a story about Paris High School which has had a very successful year. Speech Club members included: Mike Wells, Sean Scott, Mike Young, Judy Pridemore, Lynn Wil- liams, Nancy Kaufman and Darnel Jones. The group competed in sev- eral area speech tournaments throughout the school year, includ- ing tournaments at Scott County, Harrison County, Lexington Catholic, Henry Clay, and Jessa- mine County. The Regional Speech Tourna- ment was held on March 3 on the campus of Georgetown College. Paris High students who attended the regional meet were Nancy Kaufman, Lynn Williams and Dar- nel Jones. All three students re- ceived high rankings which were sufficient to qualify them as com- petitors in the state tournament. Darnel Jones, who competed in the Poetry category, took first place in area tournaments at Henry Clay and Lexington Catholic in regular competition. On Saturday, he won first place in the State poetry com- petition by reading a selection enti- tled The Story of the Negro Race by Vachel Lindsay. Lynn Williams performed a scene from Victor, Victoria, and Nancy Kaufman read a prose selection. Practice sessions are always hectic as it is difficult to assemble everyone at the same time. They were long and tiresome, but payed off in the end. Mr. Franz did a marvelous job in guiding his band and choir through the Christmas season. A whirlwind of beautiful Christmas performances kept the singers quite busy during the holidays. Solo performances by Christine Bishop and Francine Smith highlighted the Christmas programs. The final performances by the Parisonnaires was the Baccalaurate and Graduation ceremonies. Thank you for enhancing the cultural arts of our stu- dent body and adding to another successful school year. Flag girls Yvette Rice, Renee Johnson, Shanda Thomas, Yvonne Howard, and Annette Brown added color and zest to the band routines. 60 Band Band officers Monica Williams; president Nancy Bannister, Robin Redwine, Hollie Stewart, and Nancy McCracken take a few minutes to give a smiling pose before con- tinuing with practice. Band 61 Mats Off Zo Zhe Band School bells, fall foliage, the rumbling of drums and high step- ping young musicians all mark the start of another school year. But long before August, the band mem- bers, majorettes, and flag girls start their year with a week of intense drill and practice at Camp Crescen- do. The band and its entourage ushered in the football season with some splendid marching and musi- cal executions. They then followed with Christ- mas parades and concerts, basket- ball games and completed the year with their fabulous spring concert and graduation. Even with all of this activity they found time to enter the march- ing and musical competition at Bath County and Tates Creek. Hats off to Mr. Franz and his merry music makers! When your auto is out of tune, Stoner Parsons, Richard Reed, Willie Shriver, Jim Hurst, Kenny Parsons or Brad Parsons could be your next auto mechanic. At right, Kenney McCarty uses a machine in the Machine Shop class. Welders fabricate and repair metal products by joining pieces of metal to form a permanent bond. They plan the operations and select the equipment to be used. These skills require a knowledge of the metals involved and type of weld to be made. At Clark County, Mark Parrish, Rodney Roe and Danny Puckett are learn- ing this valuable trade. 62 Vocational School Clark County Vocational Center Offers Variety Of Courses Developing the knowledge and skills for a par- ticular job while you are still in high school is an asset to you. At Clark County Vocational Educational Center you can choose from Welding, Carpentry, Machine Shop, Auto Mechanics and Health Service Careers. You may gain valuable experience from the co-op program if you have learned the necessary skills and if a job site is available. If learning a trade and hitting the work world immediately after high school is what you want, then vocational education is for you. Health Careers has become a popular course for many people. Since the work is varied, one can find a place suited just for them. Here we see Sarah Eades, Katrina Hall and Sabrina Rice learning some of the office and kitchen duties. How- ever, history took a significant turn as a 50 year old record fell when the Greyhounds won their 36th consecu- tive game and established the all-time record at 38. This team picked by many to be a rebuilding team, finished this season ranked Number 1, unusual only in that it represented the third time in as many years that number one belonged to the Hounds. A fourth consecutive District championship and an unprec- edented third consecutive Regional championship highlighted the accom- plishments of this very intense group of young men. Nevertheless, these fetes represent only stepping stones to a future that will constantly be measured by the assumption of responsibilities earned by the hard work, perseverance, and dedication of the 1983 Greyhound Pride. There was one return- ing starter, Herman Hutsell, with the need to replace four positions. Terrence Brooks, Tommy Skeen, John Hinkson, and Myrin Roberts did an excellent job at this. Three of these young men will be returning; Brooks, Skeen, and Roberts. Two positions will be filled by other sen- iors, juniors from the B-team, and soph- omores from an undefeated (21-0) fresh- men team. The season ended 19-9, and the loss was to Bourbon County, the eventual runner-up in the state tournament. Coach Crain stated, I believe we have an excellent group of seniors next year with great support from our juniors and one or two of our sophomores. I feel we have a solid group of players every year through our seventh grade. Team listens patiently as coach gives last minute instructions. The Lady Hounds jumped out to an excellent start by winning their first four games of the season. Their only loss before Christmas came at the hands of Lexington Lafayette, a participant in the girl's state tourney. The Lady Hounds then finished second in the Campbell County post-Christmas tourney, but rang in the New Year with a loss in the Harri- son County Tournament. Some tough luck in the latter part of January and early February resulted in the lost services of two starters for four weeks. During that time, the Lady Hounds went two and six. The last two weeks of February became the stiffest part of the schedule. Despite losing their last four reg- ular season games, the Lady Hounds actually exhibited some of their best performances of the season. They breezed past their first opponent in the district tourney only to lose a heart breaker to Harrison County in the championship game. The final margin being only two points. After drawing 10th Region favorite Mason County in the first round, the lady Hounds put up a good fight but it was not enough to de- throne the Royals. The final season record end- ed at 10-15. It was not a winning season, but success is not always measured in terms of numbers. After overcoming many obstacles, the Lady Hounds fought back and found satisfaction in knowing that in the end, they had performed up to their capabilities.
