PARISIAN 1983 WHAT IS PRIDE? Pride is the thing that causes one to have self respect, in knowing that you have done your best. Pride is the feeling of knowing that the peak may never be reached, but an effort was made to reach it. Paris High School Paris, Kentucky _ Pride is the setting of goals, and accomplishing them. Pride is the dreaming of dreams, and making them come true. Pride is facing unknown challenges head on, and never shrinking from them. Pride is doing small and large things well. Pride is saying “I can” and “I will.” Pride is facing our responsibilities with maturity. Pride is these things and more, for we are the essence of our pride. She is always available to answer questions, guide and assist when the need arises. She is highly respected among her students and colleagues. She came to Paris High School five years ago. She has a Masters Degree from the University of Kentucky. She belongs to the Delta Pi Epsilon, Business Fraternal Organization and is now serving on the Advisory Board for the Center for Eco- nomic Education. She is a very dedicated professional, having been a Junior Class sponsor and helping with the Junior-Senior Prom. She has served on the Curriculum and In-Service Committees here at P.H.S. It is with sincere appreciation for her faithfulness and interest shown to the stu- dents of P.H.S. that we dedicate our 1983 yearbook to Mrs. Joy Armstrong. Dedication 29 SUPERINTENDENT MR. RONALD CHUMBLEY ‘I will study and get ready, and perhaps my chance will come’. A. Lincoln. By study we accrue data and concepts, much as a reservoir stores water. To get ready we must be able to utilize this knowl- edge, perhaps as a fountain. When our chance comes, we must properly present ourselves and our knowledge, otherwise it is as rain on the ocean. The Pep Club became a vital part of athletics and strived to be a vital part of academics. Starting out the year making posters and signs during the football season helped to raise the interest of each individual member. Members made run-throughs and cheered at the games, igniting the enthusiasm of the crowd. Shakers were made to use at the pep rallies and throughout the championship games orange and black filled the auditorium; voices raised to great heights, and the team was cheered on to victory. With enthusiasm flowing, the Pep Club entered the Christmas Parade. The float was entitled, “Santa’s Little Helpers” and everyone enjoyed being Santa’s Little Elves. Returning in January after a break, posters and signs went up for the basketball season. Buses were taken to away games and everyone had a desire to ignite the enthusiasm once again. February came and so did Valentine’s Day. The Pep Club members made and sold Valentine hearts to be delivered, complete with Hershey kisses. Shamrock messages came next with everyone enjoy- ing Leprechaun Day and getting a message from their friends. Plans are already being made for next year — are you interested? Come join the fun! Art 53 ---STAFF WORKS — HARD The 1982-83 Paris High Pride staff worked hard this year to get out a nice-looking and interesting product. They met in the summer, on July 10, for an organiza- tional meeting to elect editors. Staff members then sold advertisements to finance the paper. The year was filled with learning the basics of journal- ism, the fundamentals of writing news, feature, sports, and editorial articles, and learning to layout and design the paper. The deadlines were easier to meet this year, and the staff was almost always satisfied with the finished issue. The staff also started a new broadcasting program, the Paris Pride Profile, aired weekly on the Paris radio sta- tion, WILP. Each student inter- viewed one of the faculty members for this project, or gave an update of activities at PHS. The staff took great pride in working on the news- paper this year. Beth Bonnette, editor; Dana Cartmill, assignment editor; and Keith Brock- man, page editor, critique their finished product with adviser, Mrs. Mary Dicker- son. 54 Newspaper Staff Page editors Mike Chumbley, Lisa Hutchison, Kim Smart, Editor Beth Bonnette, Sean Brady, Tommy Skeen, Keith Brockman put the final touches to an issue of the Paris High Pride. Several of the members worked in booths at the Halloween Carnival held in the Paris High Gymnasium in October. When the weather was warm, they along with the Beta Club members, raked up leaves from the school grounds. They helped man the telephones for the Cerebral Palsy Telethon and donated money to the Bourbon County Emergency Heat and Fuel Program. In March they held their annual Talent Show which was a great success. The money raised went toward a scholarship given to a senior who plans to major in a service occupation in college. Their major goal each year is to raise enough money to sponsor a child in another country. This year they decided to sponsor two children from Chile. To raise the money, their sponsor, Bill Barrese, swam 5.3 miles in the Y.M.C.A. pool. The members canvassed the local community for pledges and contributions. 62 Teens Who Care IN MEMORIAM A legendary figure of Paris, Blanton L. Collier, was taken from us on March 22, 1983. A native of Millersburg, he moved to Paris when he was six. He became a star athlete at Paris, graduated in the class of 1923 and returned as a coach and teacher in 1927. His football teams won or shared two Central Kentucky Conference titles. His basketball teams went to the State Tournament four times. He left Paris in 1943 for active duty in the Navy. In 1946, he joined the Cleveland Browns as an assistant coach. He became head football coach at U.K. in 1954 and in eight years posted a 41-36 record. He returned to the Browns as head coach directing them to the NFL title game three times and winning the Championship in 1964. Upon his retirement, he moved to Houston, Texas. He was a very special man to every one who knew him. At the age of 76, he was brought home, to be buried in the Paris Cemetery. A NIGHT TO BE REMEMBERED For four young ladies, October 1 will be a night to be remembered. They were vying for the P.H.S. Home- coming Queen honor. Becky Purcell, Kim Dale, Tammy Weaver and Libby Shriver waited anxiously as the prin- cesses and their escorts took their places on the field. The Hounds were 3-1 after their first four games, their only loss coming from Montgomery County. Then, after losses to Maysville, Estill and Bourbon, the Hounds entered the AIT and upset 14th ranked Russell and 12th ranked Sheldon Clark. Headed toward the District the Hounds ended Mason County’s two year home winning streak, defeated Bourbon County, and nearly pulled off an upset of 14th ranked Clark County. The Greyhounds came easily out of the District and defeated Bracken in the Regional tournament, but then were stopped by homestanding Mason County, ending their season at 17- 10. The Paris Ladyhounds defeated arro- gant Mason County Royals by a score of 51-50 at home- standing Southside. PHS Ladyhounds defeated Bourbon County in District Tournament and Estill County in Regional play, but lost to Mason County in a semi-final game. Libby Shriver was named 10th Region’s best player and All- State Honorable-Mention. The overall basketball season for the PHS Ladyhounds was inevitably one of the best in years. After dropping the first two games of the season, things started picking up for the Hounds, beating Frankfort in a double header and beating Bourbon County on their home field. After losing to some tough teams. Rowan County and Harrison County the Hounds dropped the opening game of the District to Bourbon County. The Hounds had the talent, it just never seemed to fall into place at the right time for more wins. The season was statisti- cally dominated by two seniors and a host of sophomores. Mark Sears had 20 RBI’s and 3 homeruns to his credit, while Darrin O’Bryan ranked second in RBI's with 11 and tied with sophomore Bo Henry for a .333 batting average Sophomore Scotty Whitaker topped the batters list with a .404 average. Whitaker had 21 hits and Tommy Skeen, also a sophomore had 19. Henry and Sears tied for the lead in runs scored with 14 apiece. Coach Blunk speaks highly of the prospects for a super season next year. Our thanks go Coach Terry Blunk for his coaching of the PHS baseball team for the past two years.
