The 87th running of the Big Diploma Stakes Race is about to begin! The very dedi- President’s Message There is something special about PHS that allows it to bold a special place in the hearts of its graduates, stu- dents, and faculty. The atmosphere that exists, the closeness of everybody connected with the school, en- ables PHS to maintain a perfect combination of a qual- ity education and a fine extra-curricular program. The educational standards at PHS have always been noted for their excellence. The main factor in main- taining our educational excellence lies in the fact that we have a top-notch faculty that fully understands every aspect of the students' needs. Like the educational program, the extra-curricular ac- tivities are first-rate. Our athletic programs produce contending teams year in and year out. Few schools in the state can claim this. Paris is a school so rich in quality and tradition that it will live forever — no matter what some people may think. Paris has what every school needs to be a suc- cessful institution — a fine student body, an excellent and understanding faculty, and the pride to see that anything done in the name of this school is done well. 4 CAND1DS -Vz-t At right, Yvette Rice and Beverly Gay serve Ms. Barbara Clark during Parent-Teacher Conference Day. Counselor’s Office Is A Popular Place At PHS To many students, Mrs. Scott's office is just like another classroom and they go there just like any other class. Why? Be- cause Mrs. Scott is a friend, always there when you need her and always willing to help any student with any problem he may have. During the 1980 season, the Hounds won 6 games and lost 6, bad a four game winning streak, won their first District Title since 1974, and went unde- feated in CKC play at 4-0. The Hounds had a tough schedule this year playing four teams that were at one point ranked No. 1 in Class A and two teams ranked as high as No. 2 in the state. The Hounds also played two 3-A schools. Paris did manage some glory moments during the year. The team's great comeback against Harrodsburg to win 22-20 and their almost upset of Paintsville (ranked then No. 1) are just two of the high points. Paris managed a big win over No. 2 Berea and a beautiful vic- tory over always powerful Richmond Madi- son. The individual highlights of this 1980 season were Timmy Dale's 204 yards rushing against Nicholas County and Dwayne Dun- can’s fumble recovery against Bourbon Coun- ty. Left: LET’S GET FIRED UP! The Greyhounds did play against several tough competitors, and Coach Crain considered the month of February as the hardest on the team. The highlight of the season came when Paris won an 18-point victory over the “people on the bill.” (We all know who that is!) What about the players' attitude? Coach Crain remarked, “Our players had a great attitude and the willingness to win.” That’s what helps make a fine bas- ketball team. BASKETBALL 79 IA TOO MUCH “D”! It was a year in which superb perfor- mances overcame the lack in depth. The boys and girls track team, under the direction of Coach Sciubba. molded their performances in the footsteps of Lindrell Blackwell. His habit of enduring hard work spread throughout each participant, en- abling their performances to be in the limelight as they crossed the fin- ish line in record breaking times. The concentration at practice was much in demand, weight training, relay drills, 3-5 miles of condition- ing circuits, and interval workouts, pushed everybody to their maxi- mum capacity. In the end, the re- wards were great. School Record Broken Ivan Rice established a new school record in the 100 meter dash at 11.40 seconds in the CKC meet. Lindrell Blackwell set the school record in the 200 meter dash, 22.6 seconds, but the most astonishing feat came from the girls track team. Francine Smith, an 8th grader, established a school record in the 200 meter dash (26.3), ran a 200 meter split time of 25.8 in the 800 meter medley relay, and ran a 400 meter split time of 62 seconds in the 1600 me- ter relay.
