Not only has he held teaching positions at each building level in our system, he has also coached basket- ball, baseball, and golf for ten years. Upon his resignation in 1978, he had accumu- lated a record of 166 wins and 78 losses for the basketball team. Seven of his play- ers have been awarded college scholarships. Professionally, Mr. Randolph has completed his Rank 1 in education, and is presently in Administration as Pupil Personnel Director. He is a member of the Kentucky Association of Pupil Personnel Workers, Kentucky School Administra- tors Association, and Kentucky School Health Association. It is with sincere appreciation of the many services to our school, students, and community, that we, the Annual staff, dedicate our 1979 yearbook to Mr. David Randolph. 16 Dedication After 36 years of teaching, coaching, and administrative work, Mr. William Reed, Assistant Principal of Paris High School, retired on June 30, 1979. Mr. Reed graduated from Western High School in 1932, and continued his education at Kentucky State University to earn a B.A. degree majoring in History and minoring in Physical Education. He then earned his Master’s degree in administration from the University of Kentucky. The education William Reed earned was soon put to good use. He taught at Western High School from 1937 to 1943 and from 1949 to 1954. The job of Principal was offered to him in 1954, and Mr. Reed worked at that challenging position until 1964. when Western High School was integrated with Paris High School. Mr. Reed became Assistant Principal of Paris High School in 1964, and he spent many hours of his time working for the benefit of the students right up to his retirement. Mr. Reed is perhaps best known for his successful coaching career. As Western’s basketball coach, he brought his team to second place in the State basketball tournament. But the determined coach was not to stop there. His team won the National Title in Nashville, Tennessee the following year. Our Assistant Principal has also been active in the community. He holds a position in the Paris City Commission, the Planning and Zoning Board, and a State Agricultural Advisory Committee. Mr. Reed is also a member and elder of the Seventh Street Christian Church. He and his wife, Wil- lanna, have three children-Jan, Kimberly, and William F. (Sonny). It is with great pride and sadness that we let Mr. William “Chief ’ Reed go. His work has been and will continue to be an inspiration to those who will follow him. 17 It is with these thoughts and remembrances that the Annual Staff dedicates this book to Mr. William Reed. 1979-80 Hoard of Education . To many he was a friend and to others only a face to be remembered. He should certainly be an inspiration to all of us with his will and de- termination to go on even in the face of unsurmountable odds. To those who knew him we can certainly strive and do and achieve our goals in light of his fantastic determination to live. And myself have awaked, as it seems, to the better mind; It is better to fight for the good, than to rail at the ill; I have felt with my native land, 1 am one with my kind, 1 embrace the purpose of God, and the doom assign’d. 25 Alfred Lord Tennyson 7 Student Council SENIORS Eltina Scott—President Vincent Tucker—Vice President Butch Maggard—Student Council JUNIORS Bart Rogers—President Lewis Scott-Vice President Carol Shriver-Student Council FRESHMEN Ruth Shriver—President Teri Hazzard-Vice President Douglas Crumbie—Student Council SOPHOMORES Jeff Layson-President Gary Brooks—Vice President Kathy Smart-Student Council 26 Class Officers Sophomores Reba Dodge, Secretary Jeff Layson, President Debbie Jackson. Bar- becue, pies, cakes, biscuits-whatever it be, it makes mouths water and tummies growl. The homemakers of tomorrow are practicing on their culinary arts. Not only do they cook, but they sew, make floral ar- rangements, learn child care, budget, and learn a host of other things about running an efficient home. This year the Future Homemakers of America perform- ed a great civic duty as they helped with roadblocks to raise money for the Heart Fund. These enterprising young ladies also sold cookbooks, which was a successful venture. Our future homemakers are guided under the direction of Mrs. Anna Johnson and Mrs. Debbie Fritsch. The Latin II sophomores performed, “Rinse the Blood off My Toga” for the Latin I freshmen. Some bud- ding young actors were discovered that day. At their final get- together they had a picnic where the young Romans played softball and enjoyed plain American food. Mrs. Williams was aided with club responsibilities by offi- cers, Kelly Galloway, Jeff Layson and Mark Bell. 47 Artist Skills Kevealed A stroke of the brush and a splash of paint brightens the canvas of a young as- pirant artist. So often ones talent is not discovered until his master piece is ex- hibited at the annual Arts and Music Show or he does a decoration for a holi- day season or a sports event. All juniors and se- niors are encouraged to participate as contributing members of the staff. Students receive experience in writing, editing, organizing, advertising, photography, and typing. In addition, leadership and dependability skills are developed. The newspaper is produced during the students’ study halls and spare time, as Paris does not have a journalism class. Students work very hard on the newspaper and this school year is the first one during which the newspaper was printed as a tabloid. To help finance the publication of the paper the staff sold T-shirts, patches, bumper stickers, posters and soli- citated ads from local merchants. The Editors always have a very demanding job, and Editors Beth Wilkerson, Dawn Dykes, Vita Dykes and Mary Lou Zuniga met that challenge this year. Band From a rousing march to a soft sweet love song, the P.H.S. Band entertains all ages. As al- ways, the band works hard to provide pageant- ry for our athletic events. With pretty flag rou- tines and great music, under the direction of Mr. Thomas A. Siwicki, the band carries on the tradition of providing beautiful music. It takes money to operate a band and their sales efforts included calendars, magazines, fruit, turkey dinner tickets, and spring concert tickets. The money they made will be used to purchase new uniforms in the summer of 1979. A new trophy case was dedicated at the Annual Music Departments spring concert to the memory of Mr. Billy Kookcndoffer. Mr. Kookcndoffer was one of the most loyal sup- porters the band has ever had. After the Christmas season, the Parisonnaires were still hard at work. They per- formed two well received numbers at the Annual Music Departments Spring Con- cert, and sang in the Dixieland show. These talented seniors also set a reverent mood at baccalaureate services for the seniors. The Parisonnaires were under the dedicated direction of Mr. Thomas A. Siwicki who was aided this year by his student teacher, Mr. James Wheeler. 57 Newly formed Club at P.H.S. The newly formed FBLA (Future Business Leaders of America) has a very large active membership at Paris High School, and one of the largest in the region. They recently acquired their charter and were initiated by Bourbon County FBLA in March. They sold Christmas wrap to raise money and they have many plans for next year, such as attending the regional competition in business subjects and Scrapbook displays. With an impressive 27-5 record in the 1978-79 season the Lady Hounds went all the way to State again only to be upset by rival Laural County in the semi-finals. Paris High School is still proud of a job well done. We are sure the underclass players will carry on the winning tradition. Beth Wilkerson has been an outstanding athlete during her four year career at Paris High School. She has made the 37th District and 10th Region basketball teams for the past four years. She has also been First Team All- State as well as being named a member of the All-State Basketball Tourney Team for the last three years. Beth was honored by being recognized as a member of the Parade Magazine High School All-American Team as well as the Adidas High School All-American Team. Beth also participated in the Seamco Basketball Classic at the Kutsher’s Country Club in Monticello, New York, which was held to benefit the American Cancer Society. As one of the most highly recruited athletes, male or female, Beth signed a letter of intent with Old Dominion, who holds the national title in girl’s basketball. We feel that Beth will be a great asset to their team. Congratulations Miss Kentucky Basketball. fore FORE! Look out! Here comes a stray golf ball! Who made the shot that went into the clubhouse ballroom? Not me-mine went into Stoner Creek, mine went in the sand trap, mine went over the warehouse and I made an hold-in-one on No. 9! Coach Goode looks at his troupe rather doubtful. And so it goes, with “keep your eyes on the ball”, improve your back swing”, “watch your stance,” for another great year of golf. At their regional track meet, almost all of the girls advanced to the finals- not a small accomplishment. Senior Tanya Crumbie was chosen at the regional meet to participate in the state meet. She made her team members and her school proud of her with her ex- cellent running in the 440-yard dash. Eleven seventh and eighth grade girls ran this year with the seven high school girls. Since they will lose only one senior, the Paris High School girl’s track team has a bright future. 440-yard Relay 4th Place: Rebecca Fields Cydney Parker Debra Washington Donna Ketchum 880-Yard Medley: Cydney Parker Debra Washington Donna Ketchum Tanya Crumbie Hurdles Ruthie Shriver Kaila Emerson Donna Ketchum 440-Yard Dash: Tanya Crumbie was 5th in the State meet held in Lexington at University of Kentucky Shively Sport Center. 89 Mr. Bill Alverson, Mike Hawkins, Stephan Jacobs, Jeff Johnson, Brian Clark, Dewayne Rice, Timmy Dale, Darryl Hawkins, George Richardson, Terry Rice, Gary Nichols, Steve Davis, Louis Richardson, Kirk Strawder, Ivan Thomas, James Clark, Preston Hall, Ivan Rice, Louie Emmons, Woodrow Miles, Richard Parsons, Lindrell Blackwell. These gymnasts represented Paris High School admirably. The team has had a successful year, and best of all, they will only lose one team member to graduation. Students can expect even bigger and better things from their gymnastic team in the years to follow. Seniors attending the 1979 Junior-Senior Prom were pleasantly surprised by the creative dec- orations of the juniors. Based on the theme, “We May Never Pass This Way Again,” the decora- tions included a park bench, street lights and pretty streamers. For favors each senior was pre- sented a glass with his or her name written on it. A Prom king and queen were elected this year by the juniors. Miss Eltina Scott and Mr. Mark Horne were the happy recipients. Prom ’79 was a great success, and enjoyed by all in attendance.
