PARISIAN SENIOR CLASS. PARIS HIGH SCHOOL. PARIS. KENTUCKY THE SPIRIT OF YOUTH The Spirit of Youth is that perceptive quality which speaks for all that is real or imagined. It envelops a high school campus with motivation and intoxicates the creative mind. It serves as the life thread for an age in which it is fashionable to tell it like it is. This very spirit is Paris’ core. She wears it with a pride that at times seems almost paradoxical. It reaches out. It can be psychedelic, or simply meditative. It is each individual’s emerging personality which becomes the spirit of Paris High School. The foundation of Paris’ spirit, upon which all values are based, is its heritage. For without it. we have nothing upon which to build or add. Paris’ heritage is embellished with tradition. It is a composite of standards—statues and buildings, people and ideas-which symbolize all that Paris has stood for in the past and will stand for in the future. It is. therefore, that from which we draw in order to design our destiny. Any spirit, regardless how rich its heritage, is worthless if bound to the past. The spirit of Paris High is vibrant, steeped in tradition, yet deeply concerned with building a future both for those here now and for those yet to come. The spirit penetrates the student and becomes manifested as scholarship-the growing of a mind toward a future that otherwise would not have been as rich. Growth demands a variety of activities which stimulate special interests, through which a sense of awareness and a growing concern for social development is formulated. The aware student faces the realization that he is caught up in the spirit, in a world of books and ballgames that challenge his identity. Involvement is the only way to preserve oneself, to keep from being engulfed in the swift current, drifting from one unlearned experience to another. This involvement contributes to the spirit, and the spirit grows. 3 IN MEMORIAM 1 On September 24. 1977, Paris High School lost a friend and boardmember in Mr. Donald Wells. Although he served a very short term as a member of the Paris City Board of Education after having taken office in January. 1977, he was a dynamic and faithful member. He has contributed greatly to our school and our community. Among other things, he was a member of the Rotary Club. Masonic Lodge, on the board of directors of the Stoner Creek Country Club, and a member of the First Presbyterian Church. We shall never forget Mr. Donald Wells and his devoted dedication to serving the needs of the students in the Paris School System. Fast as the rolling seasons bring The hour of fate to those we love, Each pearl that leaves the broken string Is set in Friendship's crown above. As narrower grows the earthly chain. The Circle widens in the sky; These are our treasures that remain. But those are stars that beam on high. O. W. Holmes, F.W.C. (Frederick W. Crocker) 4 DEDICATION In 1963 Paris High School was fortunate to acquire Miss Juanita Sutherland, a native of Anderson County, as mathmematics instructor. Throughout the years, she has continually received the respect, love, and admiration of her students, while the students themselves have gained superior education in the field of mathematics through her teachings. Miss Sutherland’s students feel free to discuss any problem with her because she is willing to give them her time whether the problem is proving triangles congruent or finding an escort to the prom. Miss Sutherland is also devoted to supporting sports activities at Paris High. She can always be found yelling and cheering zealously for her team. This teacher has difinitely contributed to the lives of students at Paris High; she has shown in many ways that she cares for them. For this reason, the Annual Staff of 1978 dedicates this yearbook to Miss Juanita Sutherland. 5 SENIORS Every Senior Class takes pride in selecting its class officers. An officer should have qualities of leadership, dedication, and a desire to try and help others. This year, the Senior Class did an outstanding job in select- ing the best possible students for office. Those elected are as follows: President, Chet Coons Vice-President. Donna Hazzard Secretary, Betsy Leer Treasurer, Mike Matthews Student Council Representative, Cis McKinney Patty Zuniga was elected the 1977 Paris High Homecoming Queen. Being chosen on her personality and her outstanding popularity with the Paris High School Senior Class, she personifies the grace and beauty that is characteristic of a queen. The football season is always high- lighted with the Homecoming Festivities. There is one Senior Queen Candidate elected from each homeroom. This year, the three young ladies were: Judy Henry, Sheri Jones, Patty Zuniga. 7 Ricky Chenault SENIORS Stuart Beheler Thomas Britton Chet Coons Rusty Coburn Jessie Crockett Janet Crump Mona Davis Jeff Dale David Dean Janet Crooks Sharon Davidson 9 Susan Fades ■HL Rae Jean Flack Tami Gaines Melissa Garrison Donna Hazzard Lesley Halsey Debbie Krieg Teresa Krekel £ Betsy Leer Larry Martin Dion Lotz Mike Matthews ■ Cis McKinney Bill Nutter Mark McCracken Billy Mitchell Linda Nichols Derrie Oliver Peggy Wells Donna Wills Wilson Worick Frank Workman Cathy Wyatt Wanda Yazell Patty Zuniga 19 BABY PICTURES «'? v CLOCKWISE FROM TOP LEFT: Patty Zuniga. Cis McKinney and David Graves; and Kim Whittaker and President Chet Coons. 47 THE PUBLISHING OF A YEARBOOK Publishing a yearbook is not easy! Advertisements must be solicited from merchants, the books sold to the student population and then comes hours of picture taking, editing and decision making. The staff consisted of Cathy Wyatt. Mona Davis, Cis McKinney, Donna Wills. Vickie Turner, Donna Hazzard. Melissa Garrison, Janet Crump. Shanda Strawder, Betsy Leer, Wanda Yazell, Christy Pate. Debbie Bobbitt, Mike Matthews, Laura Jones. Patty Zuniga. Lesley Halsey and Susan Eades. Another year has come to end and as the last page is put into the envelope, a long sigh of relief comes from the sponsor, Mrs. Wanda Richard. Assistant Editor Janet Crump and Editor Donna Hazzard take a few minutes from their busy schedule to look over a play house as a prospective site for more pictures. Finances are important in any organization as you see Cathy and Cis counting the money. Betsy shares a few moments with Christy and Patty showing them some pictures she is working with. “I believe it would look good here”. Donna says to Janet. “What do you think?” Donna has just made a startling discovery. Vickie ponders over the usage of pictures. 49 SENIOR REPORTERS IN ACTION Where there is news and action the Senior Hi-Lites Staff is always on the job. Their biggest task was a survey made on how to make-up the snow days that were missed. The results were relayed to the Advisory Committee. The Council also had the idea of placing a soft drink machine in the front hall. The administration felt this was a good idea and now all are enjoying a cool, refreshing drink at lunch. S ociable CHOOSING A FUTURE Business training is, of course, not the only method by which a young man or woman may prepare for a vocation. It is a fact that business training is faster and less expensive. The business trained worker 9tarts earning money and gaining experience sooner than workers trained in any other field. The business graduate, if he is well-trained, need not fear unemployment. In spite of business booms and depressions, the business employee is an essential part of his organization. The business worker must be retained, as long as a company remains in operation. 67 PARISONN AIRES FRONT ROW (L TO R): Eltina Scott, Janet Crump, Dawn Dykes, Cathy Wyatt, Linda Johnson, Dion Lotz, Lesley Halsey. They also sang in the Dixieland Show, the Spring Concert, and for Baccalaureate. Eltina Scott and Kathy Smart accompanied this group on the piano. Thanks, Parisonnaires for some very outstanding programs. 70 71 THE PRIDE OF P.H.S. Cis McKinney, Drum Major leads the P.H.S. THOSE WHO PROVIDE FOOD FOR GROWING YOUNGSTERS It takes more than a lot of chairs and tables and a few big pots and pans to make a good school cafeteria. It takes workers who are dedicated to their jobs, get along well with people, and above all are good cooks. Paris High School is fortunate to have twelve cafeteria workers who are all of the above. They greet hundreds of students everyday with a smile, and help them to make selections. The workers are under the direction of Mrs. Dorothy Wells. 98 ALUMNI BANQUET ALUMNI CUP The winner of the 1976 Alumni Cup.
