V UR ALMA MA' EI Below we see a picture of the modern high school where we, the students of Paris High School, spend four years of our lives acquiring knowledge and molding lasting friendships. The building we see here has not always been in use by the students of Paris. In fact, Paris has not always had a high school. If we stretch our imagination a little, we can remember that in 1884 a group of men was chosen to select a building for the high school. Aiken Institute, a former private school, was bought by the committee, and classes were started soon after. This building was used until 1906, when it was demolished and a new one built. However, fate was not on the side of the high school, for two years after completion in 1908 the school was destroyed by fire. A new high school was built to replace this one, but history repeated itself when Paris High School was again destroyed in the fire of 1916. The cornerstone of Paris High, as we know it today, was laid in 1917. A short time later the building was completed. No improvements were made until 1949, when a complete renovation program of the building was begun. First a new lighting system was installed, then a modern window system and chair-type desks. Next came the plastering and painting of the halls and classrooms. Windows were added to the north and south sides of the auditorium, while those on the east side were walled up. Lockers were also painted and repaired for the students. OWL 6 Not only material changes, but also curriculum changes were made. An important one was the revision of the foods and clothing departments into a combined unit. This year a new course, journalism, was added to the curriculum. Students in this class edit and publish a monthly newspaper, The Cat's Tale. Two clubs were also organized this year. Those students interested in memorizing Bible Scriptures becames known as the Bible Memory Association. Girls who plan to enter the field of nursing formed the group of Future Nurses of America. The 759 students of Paris High School are studying forty different courses, including several one-semester courses. Our faculty, composed of thirty-three able teachers and counselors, leads us through the paths of knowledge. Paris High School stands as a stately symbol to all those who see her. To the senior she is the completion of a major part of his education. To the junior she is an understanding friend who has helped develop his personality. To the sophomore PHS is a symbol of future greatness. To the freshman she is the beginning of a new experience. To the faculty she is the inspiration to teach her students. To the public she is the center of activity for the youth of our city. But to all, Paris High School is a place of learning, friendship, and happiness.
