Everywhere men were working in order to get in new windows before the new school term. Marble steps added much to the beauty of our building, and the outside steps were remodeled. The projection room was paintedg a number of oflices and other rooms were repainted. The new, wider sidewalks have been enjoyed not only by the students but also by the citizens of Paris. Soon after school started, modern desks, shades, new restrooms upstairs, and new fixtures throughout the ones downstairs completed improvements. A clinic room and a homemaking room were added to the clothing department. In the gymnasium files for the music were added. The improved P. H. S. was the home of the District Teachers' Conference held in March. 8 OWL ..,, iewd WISE FIELD HOUSE LAKE CROOK RECREATION GROUND BUSINESS AND SUPERINTENDENT OFFICE lewd A ., -W :X ' , V- x :vrQ1I'fX1-rrfbgq., F-W ' ,, ,, .... As the turn of the century has brought about many developments in all phases of life, it has added new interests to our school. To enlist more students in activities, many new clubs, such as the Business Club and the Projectors' Club have been organized. Giving advice to any student not only for the present but for the future is the aim of the new Guidance Program directed by Mrs. Perry Booth. Another helpful step in this direction is the aptitude tests given by the Texas Employ- ment Commission. Among our new programs is the Student Council, which has made steady progress from its beginning. We expect great results in the future. Paris High School and its personnel will ever work for the betterment of all its students. OWL 17 ur iZ3i:ifingui6Aevl guezifd E 18 OWL MRS. S., the Freshmen of 47-48 banded together to form one of the largest and most talented choruses ever to sing Loyal and True. We soon proved that we had strength, other than lung-power, by electing Ida Terrell Boswell, OWL Sweet- heart. This was the first time in the history of P. H. S. that a freshman had received that honor. Other Hit Paraders were our directors, Miss Oliver and Bill Dawson. Among other things, it was evident that we were capable of having good times at football games, Teen Town, and at our own Christmas Party. Yes, we are singing a lively song, but, as the saying goes, You ain't heard nothin' yet! Stanza II Same song, second verse, could be better... and it is! We were really catching on to the tempo now. We started the year off right by electingjimmy Ferguson, Betty Thomson, San- dra Staples, and Kathryn Hall as class officers. Another wise move was the selection of Miss Celia Donaldson as our director for the remain- ing school years. She has all the qualities of a lovable person, fine musician, and a capable leader. Sandra Staples, a valuable member of the class, was chosen as OWL Sweetheart nomi- nee and Sophomore Favorite. The year was brought to a close with a huge picnic at Lake Crook. Our hearts were growing up and, oh, how eagerly we looked forward to becoming upper classmenl Stanza III The beat of our song began to quicken as we reached that glorious state-upper class- men! We now enjoyed such privileges gs being admitted to the Tri-Hi-Y and Hi-Y, and we had a voice in all major activities. Our class happenings got under way with a back-to- 36 OWL school dance, but all was not play for funds had to be raised for our junior-Senior Prom. Money-making projects, such as concession stands at two football games, and a very suc- cessful stunt night, were sponsored by the 49- 50 juniors. Directing such projects were Miss Donaldson and the class officers, Alfred Mac- kin, Melba Robinson, Mary Alice Horne, and Billy Alexander. In the spring of the year, honors were bestowed upon our class by eight of the juniors being admitted into the National Honor Society and a large number of our classmates receiving awards at class night. The major composition of our junior year ,was the junior-Senior Prom. That exciting night found the gym transformed into a French Cafe, and we left the junior year behind us with the theme-song of the Prom, Some Enchanted Evening, ringing in our ears. Stanza IV The grand finale of our high school song was our Senior year, a combination of all the joys that high school has to offer. Such fads as strumming a Nuke, Charlestoning in our orange and chartreuse socks, wearing cowboy outfits, and doing the shag with our best beau, added to the fun. Of course, letter jackets and Senior rings are always The Thing. Under the capable leadership of Dick Crawford, the class performed such functions as giving dances, publishing an OWL, producing an outstanding Senior Class Play, and presenting a water cooler to the school. Since every good song must come to an end, the Seniors of 50-51, the bankers, musicians, physicians, and soldiers of tomorrow, received their diplomas with just a touch of sadness. Although this group may never sing together again, each, in his own heart, will continue to be Loyal and True forever. QI'lL0l Cfdxifi OUR MISS BROOKS This typical snap shows the entire cast. The purpose of this council is to promote and maintain closer relationship between the student body and the faculty, to build character and promote better citizenship, and t spirit. o insure better school The membership is composed of each home room president and the four class presidents. The officers of the council are elected by the representatives. The projects and accomplishments of the year have been numerous and successful, while the student body has been most co-operative and appreciative. The Juniors struck the big notes of the year in 1950-51 under the leadership of Mr. Thiel- man and these officers: Bobby jack Greer, Patsy Holcombe, jerry Redus, and Paul Daniels. They began by entertaining the school on Oct. 20 with a Sock Hop. Prizes were given for the 42 OWL loudest socks and the smallest and largest feet. The class had charge of the concession stand at the Sherman-Paris game, participated in sports, were leaders in all clubs, contributed much to the Student Council. Bunny Williams was chosen as their OWL Sweetheart nominee, and five outstanding Juniors were selected as OWL assistants. Another note to add to their staff was Stunt Nightf' a special project of the Junior Class. This class has contributed much to Paris High, distributing its leaders in every field of service and extra-curricular activities. We may have complete confidence in turning over the leadership of our school to this class in 1951. 4I 44, S i igA Wofefi SOPHOMORE CLASS OFFICERS Emma Lee Cunningham Ruth Ann jack james Park James Sweeney Prexident Secretary Treaxurer Vice-Prexidem Cabsenrb CWL 43 Q ':::::- ....f:::- . 55552 X X .ff .1 la 4' im ff ea, Ki' Aj ,Q f My ,I 1 . H. S. They began their song under the able direction of Larry Simmons and Mrs. W. G. Sluder. Because they had a con- cession stand at the Bonham game, a Christmas Dance, and took part in many extra-curricula activities, it is easy to see that the dazzle of high school did not bewilder these Freshmen. As the strain of Loyal and True continues, we find Emma Lee Cunninghm, James Sweeney, Ruth Ann Jack, and James Park-the newly elected officers, leading this class through many outstanding feats, with Ruth Ann Jack as OWL Sweetheart nominee and Margaret Butler as Christmas Queen nominee. 48 OWL Another high note of this class is the par- ticipation of all its members in the Drama Workshop, Tennis Teens, Latin Club, and vari- ous other clubs of P. H. S., in which many of them have held ofiices. As the serenade goes on, we hear the faint strain of 'Jingle Bellsf' The Sophomore Christ- mas Party on December 18 was a huge success. ' The varied talents of the Sophomore Class were displayed in the many programs and as- semblies in which they took part. The best of these were the Sophomore Stunt and the Sopho- more Assembly, March 22. The Sophomore picnic, May 3, struck the note of finality to this grand year which all 201 Sophomores enjoyed. Among the numerous performances of this class we find them taking active parts in sports, Tennis Teens, Band, Drama Workshop, FFA, FHA, Latin, and many other clubs. They got in the swing of things by running the concession stand at the Palestine football game. Another high note of the class activities was the Christmas dance held at the gym on December 15. This class has proved its capable leadership and ability in various ways, and although they are quarter notes now, they will be whole notes in their final composition. The eighty-live piece band is often called Paris Highs Twelfth Man. The Blue Blazes have made many interesting and remarkable maneuvers at the football games, appeared in assembly and on nu- merous other occasions. They have taken part in the Christmas celebration and many other civic parades. Each student looks forward to the assembly pro- grams in which the band appears, for it makes each one a memorable occasion. On October 7, eighty-five students representing Paris High School climbed into buses bound for the Tyler Rose Festival. As usual they strutted their stuff for Paris High. On February 7, band students again climbed into buses, but this time it was bound for Galveston. Two students from Paris High were elected to play in the All-State Band. They were Bobby Robinson, lst chair trumpet, and Alfred Mackin, 2nd chair tenor saxophone. The Mixed Chorus of Paris High School is recog- nized as one of the most outstanding high school Wemoird choral groups in this state. It not only functions as a club, but also meets as a regular class. Under the careful and artistic direction of Mr. Weger, assisted by Miss Celia Donaldson, accom- panist, the club has achieved a high distinction for itself as well as the entire school. Before a student can become a member of the Mixed Chorus, his ability must be approved by Mr. Weger. On November 22, the Chorus sang at the First Christian Church for the city-wide Thanksgiving service. This group has performed for various churches and civic organizations in Paris, as well as for its own student body. Both Chorus and Band looked forward to the Music Week Festival Concert on May 4. On December 20, the students of Paris High were honored to have the Chorus sing their Christmas Cantata for them in assembly. The band as well as the chorus has earned many awards and has a warm spot in the heart of all Parisians. OWL 83 -- Firft row: Moody, Arnold, Casey, Evans, Barber. The Wildcats never seemed to get going during the first half but they still held the Bulldogs to the one touchdown they acquired in the first quarter. During the second half the Wildcats came to life and made one 60-yard drive but were unable to score. Paris 19 - Carter-Riverside 12 The Wildcats made up for the defeat from Kilgore by beating the Eagles 19 to 12. Two Eagle mistakes were turned into touchdowns when Jimmy Sweeney intercepted a pass and Bebes Stallings scored on a kick that was blocked by Franklin Kyle. The other touchdown was made by J. E. Christian from the 1-yard line. Corsicana 26 - Paris 0 The unscored on Corsicana Tigers won their third game of the season by defeating the Wildcats 26 to O. A hard fighting Wildcat line held their own against the Tigers until late in the third quarter when Cor- sicana finally pulled ahead. Texarkana 42 - Paris 0 Next the Wildcats met a powerful Texarkana eleven and lost 42 to 0. A wild first half plus a tricky TH ran up the lopsided score. Both teams filled the air with passes and provided a wild show. In the second half a stiffening Wildcat defense held the Tigers to only two scores. Palestine 14 -- Paris 0 A high-rated undefeated Palestine just barely slipped past the Wildcats. This was the fourth game in a tough warm up schedule of the Wildcats and their showing was good. They had an iron defense and made several spirited drives but were unable to convert. Denison 26 - Paris 12 The Wildcats met Denison in the big game of the year. This time several costly mistakes cost this scrappy Wildcat eleven the game. The passing combination of Clyde Stinson and jimmy Sweeney plus the run- ning of J. E. Christian provided the Wildcat scores. In the last half Denison pulled ahead to win 26-12. Paris 13 - Sherman 0 Things looked mighty dark in Paris last Nov. 5th -the reason, a big tough Sherman team was coming to town. But the fighting Wildcats stunned the Bear- cats and the frozen fans with a 13-0 upset. The Wild- cats outplayed the Bearcats all around but fine run- ning by Christian and an airtight defense were their strong points. Paris 33 - Sulphur Springs 0 The Paris Wildcats really opened up on the Sul- phur Springs Wildcats-33 to 0. In this game the Wildcats showed the polish they had been working on all year. The Wildcats scored throughout the game and nearly all of the reserves played. Paris 20 - Greenville 16 The Wildcats, riding on a nest egg of 20 points scored in the first quarter, beat the Lions 20-16. Three quick touchdowns by Christian and Sweeney gave the Wildcats their 20 points. Most of the scoring was done in the first half because Old Man Winter con- trolled the last half. Paris 20 - Gainesville 18 With the Tri-Championship of 7AA on the line, the Wildcats outscored the Leopards for a 20-18 win. All but one of our scores came in the first quarter. Christian and Alexander each scored. Gainesville jumped back to take the lead but late in the third quarter Christian scored the winning touchdown OWL 99 100 OWL Billy Alexander james Barnett Harold Glen Baty Stewart Bell, Mgr.
