The people of Texas were very proud of it, because it was a symbol ot their independence as a nation. When he was administered the oath of office as first president ot Texas on Octo- ber 22, 1836, Houston concluded his speech by disenqaqinq the sword of San Iacinto and saying: lt now, sir, becomes my duty to make a presentation of this sword-this emblem of my past office.
