So it is to you, dear Faculty, that we now turn to hid a last goodbye. We have found in you sincere friends and loving companions. ln the maze of conflicting forces which have threatened to overwhelm us, you, the Faculty. have stood steadfast, a stable quality in an ever' changing world. By your faithfulness, friendliness, patience, and care you have stamped upon our minds and characters the secrets of fair play and wholesome living. You have helped us over many difficulties, and as the years roll on, the memories con' nected with our stay here will be more and more dear to us. It has been in Paris High, under your guidance, that many friendships have been formed-as well as a deep love for our school and for our teachers. 6519 A TOAST TO THE TEACHERS To Professor Chamness, we must confess, We owe the honor of our success. And Mr. Justiss, whom we all adore, Has kept our school from being a bore. And the other teachers, we love them too, For the many trials they have carried us through. They didn't scold, nor fuss, nor rave, No matter how we misbehaved. They were always thoughtful, patient, and kind, lnstilling good thoughts in the youthful mindg We are sorry for the pranks we played, For the trials we were and the trouble we made. But we have tried the four years past, To make a success of the Senior Class, And now in parting may we suggest' A toast to the Faculty of P. H. S. Page FiftyfOne The Sentiments ojf A Senior The words Paris High School mean very little to the majority of the people in the world, but, to me, it means one of the greatest things in my life. It means friends, associations and a place where a person can enjoy receiving an education. In this great school of ours, we are not merely professors and students, but we are also great friends and associatesg our teachers are not those who sneer and scorn the students under them, nor are our students those who dis' like their teachers and dislike to attend classes under themg but we are as one large family with our fellow students as our brothers and sisters and our in' structors as our parents, not only teaching us the principles of the book but also giving us the advantage of their experiences in life. Here, in this great school of ours, we make the majority of our lifeflong friends and here we decide, with the help of our friends and our experiences. what our aims in life shall be and in what lines our efforts shall be directed. I'Iere's hoping that everyone is able to appreciate the things that Paris High School has given him as much as I do. Here I have made my best friends, and. to me, friends mean practically all there is in life. I sincerely hope that all the sons and daughters of Paris High School have the same sacred feeling that I have when the beautiful refrain of Paris High Loyalty Song is sung, and that they will always be loyal and uphold the standards and aims of our great sc ool. Gene Woodfin, announcer, and the end men furnished the humor for the show. The four classes were represented in the minstrel chorus as well as in the dance choruses, which were directed by Miss Edith Goode. Paris High went back to the good old days in the Gay Nineties Chorus, which was the hit of the evening. The girls wore old-fashioned dresses with dust ruffles, and the boys wore checked suits with 'highfwateru pants. The minstrel sang a melody of Gay Ninety numbers. The freshmen presented a Schoolday dance featuring Misses Evelyn Lum' mus and Mildred Strong. Several of the special numbers were songs by Misses Hazel Coker and Dorothy Morgan. Through this show, we discovered we had a crooner in our midst, Billy Bills. Last, but in no sense least, the favorites of each class were presented by the mastcot, Jimmie Hollis, and his little girl friend, Callie Ann Ayres. The Owl Staff wishes to take this opportunity to express our gratitude to Miss Beatie, our sponsorg Mrs. Alexanderg Edith Goode, our dance director, and to Edwin Donaldson, our pianist. QUEEN I1 I l I I I Page SeventyfSeven Football Queen As is the usual custom, the Football Queen for the ensuing year was elected this year before the first home game. With votes selling for 1 cent each it seemed at first as though several of the candidates would tie, but in the last afternoon of the balloting Miss Barnes's friends got behind her with their sup' port and elected her Football Queen. On the night of Friday, September 28, 1934, our Football Queen, Miss Ruth Barnes, made the kickoff to the Honey Grove Bearcats. Miss Barnes, attired in blue and white, was escorted on the field by Captain John Browning. It has been the custom, for the past two years to elect a Football Queen. In 1933 the queen was elected by the players themselves, but in 1934, it was def cided that she should be elected by the student body, each player, however, was given ten complimentary votes. P J May Day Fete For several days before May 1, 1934, the school was all afflutter with the election for the 1934 May Queen. First one and then the other, of the sev- eral candidates who were putting up a strong race would forge ahead. The 1934 OWL Staff entered their own choice, The Owl Dark Horse, whose name had been given to Mr. Chamness in a sealed envelope to be opened in case that the Dark Horse won the race. The suspense was terrific, while the votes were being counted, until it was finally announced that the Dark Horse won the election. It was then made known that the winner was Margaret Hathaway. In chapel, on the morning of May 1st, 1934, A. D., Miss Margaret Hath' away was crowned May Queen for the ensuing year. Our superintendent, Mr. Chamness, presided over the coronation. Miss Hathaway was resplendent in a purple robe trimmed with silver, and a silver crown was placed on her head, after a speech having been made by Mr. Chamness. The stage was decorated with baskets of flowers and the Queen in her royal splendor was ably entertained by a program consisting of a representative of each class. From the senior class, Miss Dorothy Ormand sang for her royal highness. From the juniors came Miss Dorothy Morgan who also sang. The sophomores had their songbird in Miss Dorothy Nell Sebastian. The freshmen were ably represented by Miss Dorothy Lou Webb who gave a whistling solo. The pro- gram closed by the student body singing several songs. Captain john Brown' ing, with a great deal of effort Coach gizve us a team that has wcn more games than any Wildcat team since 1931. This year's team has produced many new Wildcat stars: chief among these are the backs, Eddie Bankheacl. Jack Wilson. Red Ellis, and Ulrnan O'Dea. Eddie won the hearts of the Blue and White rzmoters with his punt returns and consistent ground gaining ability. jack was a veritable powerhouse seldom if ever did he take the ball and fail to gain ground. Red's drive and pluck helped the Cats in many a tight spot. Ulman was one of the smartest field generals we have ever had. His head work and rifleflike passes helped to many a touchdown. On the line the work of Thurman Pearson. Quincy Hazlewood. Wesley Perkins, Preston Garrett and others was highly commendable. Jake Parsons, although ineligible in conference games, more than proved his worth in the other gamesg he will be invaluable next year as a quarterback. Coach Barnett made the mcst cf his availble material and gave P. H. S. a good basket ball team. The Wildcats were handicapped by their height, but they made up for this by their speed and determination to win. Thurman Pear' son, true to his reputation, was high point man of the season. Led by Chief of Police Bills, local law enforcers fought through a rain of pop bottles, hot air, and water to reach the second floor of the house where the hunted one waited them. A bouquet of onions at the top proved too much for all but the sturdy Bills, who forced Duncan, the Blimp, to surrender at the point of a broom stick. Miss Duncan was taken immedif ately to the local jug where her bail was set at 83.98 and she was released after her bailies, Parker and Woodsides, had signed her bond. Hunted for three weeks by po' lice of four cities, Duncan is charged with the murder .of a one' time friend. Anderson was found with a knife in her back and both legs broken. Police suspected foul play. VANITY DISCOVERED IN NOTABLE SENIOR Procrastination is said to be the thief of time, but it may be said that the vanity runs a close second. Not long ago a dignified senior. james jenkins. awoke with his hair looking like a bramble bush. He was on the horns of a dilemma. Torn by the desire to be at class on time and to appear well in the eyes of the pretty maidens, he chose, after deliberation, the latter. Quickly grabbing a hair tonic bot' tle. he began to sprinkle his head with what he thought was rain wa' ter, colored and perfumed. He had always been told that to get the best results from this beauty aid. it was necessary to rub it well into thc scalp. To accomplish this end he began to rub and scratch, but fnow comes the sad partj it was shampoo. With a guest list of more than 100 celebrities, the girls of Paris High will sponsor a dunking party at high noon today at Dyche's Dunk Dive. Dunkers invited include: Milf dred Strong, jean Stockey, Bertha Saufley, Tommylou Sharp, Kathryn Duncan, Lorraine Blair, Billie An' derson, and many others, most of whom learned at the coffee shop. Dyche's Dunk Dive will be dec' orated for the occasion with an elaborate display of spring flowers including a number of wall flow' ers. Shaw's Sheiks, a local rag'time band will furnish the music for the occasion. Guests will receive a liberal sup' ply of doughnuts and dunk dishes furnished by Wall. An attempt will be made to lower the dunking rec' ord of the school. DONALDSON TO GO ON AIR EVERY MONDAY NIGHT Radio fans interested in Edwin Donaldson will be delighted to learn that he will be on the air every Monday night over CBC, lo' cal station WOP. Natural ability to make melody moan and groan has made Donald- son, a former small time song and dance man, a big find to radio land. He has never taken a music les' son in his life but sings and plays only in his natural way. He started his career and other social functions. He is also reorganized as one of the chief lyric writers in Tin Can Al' ley. His latest dance creation, given in drama form is When the Sun Comes Over the Gas House. His talent was recognized by local cir' cles and he was sent to New York where he crashed into radio. at dances ler, in a match at the Mule Barn Arena last night. Terrell took the first fall in three minutes with a flying'thumb hold and a full beak twist. The second fall took five minutes and went to Terrell on an ear lock and stomach jam. Ears Morris seemed helplessly outclassed and failed to make an impression with his performance. To start the match, Peril threw his towel around Morris and choked him for two minutes, while the referee, Hub Hollis, played checkers with the seconds. Morris couldn't holler enough, and Ter' rell let him go. Morris tried a halffnelson on his manager, but missed by millimeters. Terrell at- tempted a flying mare, but caught a hoof in the mouth. A pop bottle caught Hollis over the left ear, and he was co-unted out by Terrell and Morris. Peril Terrell took a hammer from his seconds and chased the newspaper men from the ring. Morris emerged from his chair where he had been knitting and Terrell grabbed the hold, resulting in the first fall. Both men took the ring after the first fall, with the hatchets. They cut down the post around the ring and made a fire, Morris, in his sweet, clear voice sang, Hold Me in Your Arms. Dear. Terrell re' spo-nded with 'No, No, a Thou- sand Times No. Peril tried a flying tackle and was retrieved from the bottom of a stable. Ears wouldn't go on with the fight unless a collection was taken up. No one responded. Both men shook hands and en- dorsed Struky Likes. VVILDCATS VVIN LAST FOOTBALL GAME SCORE 351.49 to 0 Coach Wishard's Wildcats cap' tured the title of Texas Interschof lastic Intellectual Association here last season when they defeated the Sagons 31.49 to 0. The Sagons were strong but couldn't win. Bankhead, Paris plunger, and Pearson. ace foozle man, took in' dividual honors when they placed winning bets on themselves. To start the game, Barnes kicked off and was buried on the field of battle. The two teams lined up and the Sagon captain kicked the water bucket over Coach Wish' ard's head. The ball was recov' ered from the press box and both teams lined up again. James jack made a two-tofone bet with Perkins that Jack Wilson wouldn't fall off the bench. Wilson fell off the right end of the bench and the Sagon captain drew a five yard penaltv for step' ping on his face. Bankhead stole two pair of shoes and then picked up a watch over right guard. Par' sons hit the way and James went over for the score. Browning didn't try for point as the goal posts were being used for something else. Par' sons intercepted a hotfdog and then lost fo'bits to the Sagons' right end. Braswell was hurt on that play but nobody noticed him. james Jack claimed a foul and was chased out of the field. Wishard sent in a flock of reserves but the regulars refused to leave the field, so both squads stayed on and play' ed a game of marbles. Pearson returned the timekeeper's gun as the half ended. The second half wasn't played because Capt. Browning said the Wildcats had already won. The following graceful ac' count from Mr. Russell's facile pen is the most accurate and satisfac' tory report of a nuptial event we have ever recorded in these col' umns: Last evening, just as the clock in the steeple struck nine, a vast concourse of the beauty and the chivalry of our splendid city, com' posing wealth beyond the dreams of the kings of India and forming a galaxy only excelled in splendor by the knightly company at the Field of the Cloth of Gold, assem' bled to witness the marriage of Miss jean Stockey and Mr. Rus' sell. The great auditorium was a bower of smilax and chrysanthe' mums, bewildering, amazing, su' perb in its verdant labyrinth. As the clock was striking the hour, the tenfthousand-dollar pipe organ filled the edifice with strains of most seductive, entrancing music, played by Miss Inez Hatcher, the onl leftfhanded organist in the world. Then came the wedding party, magnificent, radiant, re- splendent with the glittering jewels of the Orient, dazzling with gor' geousness, stupefying and miracu' lous in its revelation of beauty. There were six handsome ushers- count them, six-ten bridesmaids- ten-a bevy of real, live, flower' bearing fairies, captured at an im- mense outlay of time and money in far Caucasia. The bride's re' splendent costume and surpassing beauty put the blush upon the Queen of Sheba, made I'Iebe's ef' fulgence fade as the moon before the sung and as the long courtly train of knights errant and ladies' infwaiting passed the populace, they presented a regal spectacle, never equaled since the proud Clef opatra sailed down the perfumed lotusfbosomed Nile in her gilded pageant to meet Mark Anthony, while all the world stood agape at the unheard of triumph. in this towng a repressed LIBRARY GRAFTERS CAUGHT After weeks of planning and trap'setting, local police members successfully snared the leaders of the band of library grafters led by the football captain, john Brown' ing, in one of the most surprising raids in the history of Paris Hi. Browning was able to steer his men to the books and tables which were easi' ly stolen from the building. More than half the library has been stol- en, it is reported. Nothing has been recovered. Browning confessed early today to Chief of Detectives Double U and Redouble U and was placed in the jug to cool before standing trial. The arrest came as a complete surprise to stewdents and towns' people who never suspected that he was a wolf in sheep's cloth' ing. Members of his mob are: Honest Ike, Nathan, King' Kong Kelton, Mighty Murrah, Two-Time Thompson, Grub Worm Walker, HugfMc Roach, AntfEater Aden, Bulf letfProof Braswell, and Twof Love Larsen.
