Th1s was the QUCQIIOII w1th Whlbh the d1gn1fied CPD Sophomores greeted us on all Sld6S on the first day of school Even lf we had gotten on the Honor Roll everv mo11th 1n every year at the Ward Schools It made no d1fTerence We were Freshles just the same as the poor human who dld not know what It was to have as much as nlnety 011 hlS report It seemed as lf the whole first day of school was made up of marchlng 1ntoa class room back to the hall only to return to another class room But the hardest hardshlp was gettlng used to SIX d1fiferent teachers and the SIX dlfferent ways they wanted SIX dlfferent thrngs d0Il6 At the Ward School we had only one teacher and usually sat w1th our best frrends But at the H1gh School we must be con tent to Slt just 1n front of her or just behlnd IS the case 1n1ght be w1th some stranger from some other school whom III all probab1l1t1es we have never seen before How trresome a11d IOIIQ those forty n11nute study per1ods see111ed at IITSII I thought they would never tome to an end b11t now they seem to pass all too qulckly And recess at the Ward schools we were QIVCII at least Hfteen m1nutes and had tlme to play games but when we got to the H1gh School we had only five or ten mlnutes at the most and that onlv 111 the 1norn1ng All the studles were new except Enghsh and Ar1thn1et1c We poor l1ttle Freshmen who had never heard of algebra before asked What good does that do us? when we saw abc a11d xyz And we made comme11ts to the same effect 1Il the first Latm and Anclent Hlstory lessons But the Domestlc SCIGIICC lessons were the most enJoyable ones to me I had more pleasure out of the double perxod once a week than ln any study But, oh' The worst was yet to come The worst was rece1v1ng the first m0nth's report I walked slowly up the a1sle 1n the study hall, took mme, and walked slowly back to my seat I shut my eyes, drew a long breath then gathered llp enough courage to look at my first Freshman report My grades were not as good as I wlshed them to be,b11t,at least, they were all passable 'T1ll yet,I dread just a l1ttIe b1t, to look at my report, but I10t Ileafly as much as I d1d my flrst one My, but a Fresh111a11 has a lot of AHardsh1ps H Y ,I I .I I I ',l I I I l l ,I I I I I Y' Fw Q QU I H IE I, I ' 'I H ' 'Z rv ' I ' 7T'T.l IW!
