Community Events 7 At the time, I thought the amount of work was horrendous, but when I got to college, I was really glad I had had the class, said one former student about Mrs. Kloker's Anatomy class. Yes, the work was hard, but students for many vears have thanked Mrs. kloker for her methods of preparing them for future science classes. Mrs. Lois Kloker, who has taught Biology and Anatomy at PHS Tor many years, retired at the end of this year. Mrs. Kloker still loves teaching; she just has other things she would like to do. An avid fan and participant for Special Olympics, Mrs. Kloker will continue to work with them. Also, academic achievement has always been one of Mrs. Kloker's priorities. At PHS she worked closely with National Honor Society, and personally, she has taken many graduate classes to further her own knowledge. Retirement is not exactly the right word for Mrs. Kloker’s future. She plans to do much more than retire. As the pictures show, she is very active, and her daughters and grandchildren will also keep her busy. 8 Introduction Those Who Love Teaching Teach Those Who Love Learning Mrs. Helen (Bunny) Bibo will also be absent from PHS next year. Like Mrs. Kloker, Mrs. Bibo certainly does not plan to just sit back and let life go by. Spending more time with her daughters and grandchildren — pictured with her on this page — will occupy part of her time. Also, Mr. and Mrs. Bibo plan to travel in the next few years. While teaching here at PHS, Mrs. Bibo has had her share of bizarre things happen to her. One of her most lasting memories is of walking into her room after the school day ended to see a complete stranger yanking books off of the shelves and vandalizing the room. The stranger had walked into the building and randomly picked Mrs. Bibo’s room to assault. Mrs. Bibo says she won't miss the day-to-day grind of teaching, but she will miss the students; they are, of course, the reason she taught. Events 13 The excitement of Homecoming filled the hallways of PHS from September 28 to October 3. Powder Puff started the festivities on Tuesday night with the Sophomores defeating the Freshman in the opening game. The Seniors shut out the Juniors in the second game and completely obliterated the Sophomores in the Championship Game, making a great last game of the seniors. Besides watching girls play football, Powder Puff fans also had the opportunity to watch guys become cheerleaders . Dressed in Varsity sweaters and skirts, the senior guys led the crowds in different cheers, and aroused spirit by building pyramids and demonstrating their gymnastics ability during half times. To conclude the week long Powder Puff season, the players, coaches, and spectators all took part in the traditional shaving cream fights. While breaking in the greenies, the upper classmen showed no mercy during this annual “initiation.” On Friday nite the Girls’ Gym, was filled with happy couples dancing to the high energy sounds provided by WZZQ. At 9:30 p.m. the court members were acknowledged and our royalty, Brad King and Cami Costa danced to the theme song. “Can’t We Try.” Saturday was a cold day but spirits were high. The parade began the busy day with the Freshman winning the float competition, Seniors second, then Sophomores and Juniors bringing up the rear. Class games were at 2:00 p.m. at Allen Field. Due to lack of people and materials needed for participation the Freshmen and Juniors had to forfeit many events; however, everyone still had a great time. The Seniors won class games and Spirit Week overall, with the Sophomores and the Juniors lost. Concluding Homecoming ‘87 was the football game, Paris vs. Mt. Zion. Although the valiant effort on the part of the Tigers was not enough to beat the undefeated Braves, they may have played one of their best games of the year. 14 Homecoming “Everyone deserves 15 minutes of fame in his lifetime.' This year they presented Oliver, the story of an orphan boy who learns the art of pickpocketing and then finds his real grandfather. Melanie Bailey, one senior Drama Club member and a veteran member of the musicals offers these reflections of Oliver. Early rehearsals were difficult for everyone, but finally after a few words of encouragement from Mr. V., the cast got on track and performed superbly. This year’s performance was not only the last for the seniors, but also the last for Mr. V. It was not until after Sunday's performance that the cast knew about Mr. V.’s resignation. If we had known, the last performances would have been harder and more cherished to everyone involved. Newcomer to the stage Brad Wegner will be remembered by all for his amazing acting ability. Hopefully Billy Marlowe and Andy Keys did not corrupt him too much. The one goal Mr. V. had before each play was to instill in each person the love for theater. I know personally that he was successful and I hope the others also now have the same love for theater. I would like to thank Mr. V. on behalf of the Paris Players for his belief in and dedication to us. 22 Spring Musical Andy Keys, as Bill Sikes, will probably be voted. Child Abuser of the Year. For the senior girls. May Fete is a time to dress up try to act sophisticated, smile nervously and then shed a few tears. Senior court member, Roxie Drake, has many fond memories of May Fete. Every year before May Fete I was nervous and excited at the same time. The dances went through my mind right up to the moment the lights came on ana the music started. But this year was different. Although I had waited four years for this night, waited to dress up, waited to be introduced, I was a little sad. This was my last May Fete. Instead of dancing around, and giving pep talks as in past years, we just told each other how nice we looked, fixed hoops and teased hair. Seeing the freshman girls run onto the floor full of excitement and bewilderment reminded me of my first May Fete. I was so scared, just like these girls, but as soon as the music started all signs of nervousness were stripped away and we had a great time. Unfortunately, the dance was over too quickly. My thoughts quickly turned to the last May Fete that I danced in, The Little Old Lady From Pasadena, was so much fun. All of us dressed like grandmas screaming and running around, it was funny just at the thought of our grandmas acting like that. The grand finale was my favorite this year. Seeing all the underclassman girls working together, doing their best in our honor was pretty special to me. Even though probably half of the girls did not know the other half and most of them are not friends with each other, they were able to overlook all the past difficulties for one night and have fun. The 1988 May Fete is one of fond memories that I will always cherish. This years theme was Lost In the Fifties Tonight. This song was sung by Billy Marlowe in honor of the queen, the court, and the senior girls. Amy Payne was crowned queen by first attendant, Jan Rousch, and presented the traditional present by second attendant, Brittany Dunn. The senior girls and the audience enjoyed an evening of up beat tunes from the 1950 s. Fun was had by all. As one entered the Country Club the area suddenly sprang to life, with black and silver balloons covering the walls and corners of the room. The tables were neatly decorated with intertwined black and silver streamers. The lighted candles resting on small mirrors provided a romantic touch to the evening. The time seemed to fly by as couples danced to Small Change, a small but great band from Terre Haute, Indiana. The band was by far the highlight of the evening going as far as taking requests from several demanding seniors. Brad King and Cindy Fleming were crowned King and Queen by Junior Class President Lisa Cerra and her date, Kevin Evitt. The reigning King and Queen led the other couples in a slow dance following the coronation. As time passes, thoughts of Prom will be succeeded by other events, but the fun and excitement of the 1988 Prom will never fade. This senior class, known for its leadership and academic abilities, earned a record ninety-four scholarships. Tuesday, May 31, was extremely hot, but the seniors suffered the heat to attend Baccalaureate where four of the graduates’ fathers held the service. Two of these ministers. Reverend Klug and Reverand Conger also served at graduation. Mark Waldhauser and Jane Anderson gave final speeches to the seniors. Although Mark gave the salutatorian speech, he shared the honor with Mike Martin. Jane shared valedictorian status with Amy Padgett, David Summers, and Melanie Bailey. The ordeal ’ soon began after the 1986 season with vegorous weightlifting sessions. Prospective players quickly learned that football is NOT a light subject to Coach Corey and the team’s improvement was not going to come easily. After weight lifting sessions, the players were subjected to grueling sprints and distance runs. Then came the real work, the Paris Football Camp. Here, the epitome of Coach Corey s “No pain, no gain,” set the tone for the team's spirit of togetherness . .. Team Work. Although the hardships mounted against them, the team pulled together to make the difference on the field. The season opened on a dismal note for the Varsity team, as the Marshall Lions pulled of the win. However, this didn't keep our men down. The Tigers regained their composure and came up with an impressive victory over Westville. Even though the final Varsity record was 2-7, the Tigers were only 12 points from achieving a 5-4 record. These guys definitly proved that hard work and dedication really pays off. Not only did our Varsity Tigers show vast inprovement but also our younger Tigers improved. The Freshmen team ended their season with a 4-1 record. These tough guys showed their Tiger power by holding each of their opponents scoreless exept for their close loss against Charleston. Even though there were disappointments your work and dedication has been recognized. Keep up the good work. Many of your fans can not wait for the future seasons when the building blocks which have been laid will finally pay off. The boys team did an outstanding job in winning the majority of their meets. The girls, however, did not win any meets but held their own by breaking personal and team records. The team not only practiced together during the week but practiced individually on the weekends. In doing so they averaged about twelve hours a week in warm-ups, quarters, two mile repeats, miles for time, and 2-4 mile runs. The members of the team have to be strong not only physically but also mentally to motivate themselves and their teammates. This year's team has certainly shown that they are strong both mentally and physically. You can see this especially in our coach Rick Gosnell who received “Coach of the Year at Apollo Conference and in our Tri-Captains; Doug Dittamore, Jay Funkhouser, and Janie Anderson. With only a five week season, the golfers accomplished a great deal of victories and attained a final record of seventeen wins and three losses. Under the direction of Coach Dan Bruner, the golfers kept their heads down in the right directon as was shown in this year's results. According to Coach Bruner, This years team has worked better together as a group rather than as individuals as I have seen in past years. The team consists of boys with ages from fourteen to eighteen. Because of the difference in ages, conflicts sometimes arise, but for the most part the golfers got along great on and off the course. In fact, on the way to an away match, one could have seen all eight or so golfers with their heads bent over books, discussing chemistry, trigonometric theorems, histori — cal dates or speech topics. Then again, the golfers weren't total bookworms either. While some tried to catch a cat nap, or study, the other golfers dicussed a wide variety of topics and or other issues. Such as, the upcoming match, anything involving rock music, movies, latest and current girlfriends, impossible tests and any other imaginable subjects. This years team consisted of three freshmen, nine sophomores, three juniors and eight seniors. With the seniors leaving at the end of this school year, the team will feel some loss, but the majority of the better golfers will still be here to carry on the tradition of linkster victories. Tennis 45 The Paris Tiger basketball team enjoyed one of its finest seasons as they played some of their best basketball against some of the best teams. The team got off to a slow start, but came back to take the Tigers all the way to win the Regional Tournament Championship. The Tigers competed in several tournaments throughout the year, one of which was the Holiday Tournament at E.I.U. against St. Anthony, Teuotopolis, Belleville and Lawerenceville. The Tiger's major highlight of the year was the home game against Charleston. The student body turned out in full force to support their team and they did it with a great deal of style and CLASS. The Tigers continued to play a powerful and exciting season. The Tigers once again faced the Trojans in Mattoon in the Regional Tournament Championship. The game was close when the cheer four straight in '88'' filled the gym as the Tigers took the lead to win the tournament. The team then traveled the next week to West Frankfurt to compete in the Sectional Tournament. The competition was fierce so were the Tigers, but we somehow couldn’t pull off a victory. Despite the loss in regional play, this year's team was a winner. At the beginning of the season no one really thought the varsity would be dominating in the Appolo Conference play or the Regional; however, teamwork, talent, and hard work prevailed, and made the 1988 Tiger Varsity a team with pizzazz. After weeks of grueling practice and conditioning the girls played their first game November 23 against the Oakland Oaks. While the Varsity team was a combination of seniors, juniors, and sophomores, the Junior Varsity team consisted of sophomores and freshmen. The girls had a rough start at the beginning of the season. Due to minor conflicts the girls had to make a tough adjustment: just weeks after their season opened they switched coaches. The girls worked together to get back into the swing of things and as the season progressed, the Lady Tigers never gave up, and always showed team spirit and great determination. The Varsity Lady Tigers are: Back Row: Left to right: Coach Phil • Ludington, Missy Mattingly, Becky Woltman, Cody Willis, Amy Poole, Monica Payne, Amy Payne, Tonya Garver (manager). The Cheerleaders began practicing early in the summer to prepare for the upcoming 1987-88 season. The Varsity and Junior Varsity cheerleaders supported the Paris football team and the Paris bas-kerball team. The cheerleaders led the student body in pep sessions that aroused school spirit before up coming games. The enthusiasm of the cheerleaders encouraged the teams and fans in routine games as well as in prssure filled games, such as the Regional Tournament in Matoon against the Matoon Green Wave and The Charleston Trojans. The Freshman-Sophomore squad also had an ex-celent year. They placed third at the Illinois State Finals. The Varsity and Junior Varsity Cheerleaders competed as well in the Illinois State Finals. The Varsity squad placed sixth while the Junior Varsity squad placed 12th. The Cheerleaders worked very hard to keep the spirits high and without them, the Paris teams and fans would be sadly lacking in support and enthusiasm. The Paris Varsity cheerleaders show their versatility as they perform a difficult mount. The Fresh-Soph cheerleaders show much enthusiasm after winning third place at the Illinois State Finals. Edgar the Tiger (Shiela Jewel) gives a warm greeting to Rob Fuqua. Sarah McHenry. Merijo Jordan. Amy Edwards, and Katie Rooney have one for the read as they prepare to leave for the Illinois State Finals. 52 CHEERLEADIMC The 1987 88 Varsity cheerleaders are: (Back row left to right) Amy Edwards. Track, Track, and Track You know your workout for today. Coach Postlewait tells Matt Wacaser. Doug Dittamore and Jay Funkhouser. Chris Butler tells all onlooking track members they all should learn how to throw the shot-put. like the one is sitting on. 54 Sports Many people look at track as nothing much, a few practices, and lots of fun on bus rides. Well, track members do have fun on bus trips, but if any of the boys and girls out for track in 1988 were asked what track was like, most would respond, it’s a lot a HARD work and dedication! Every day, rain or shine, one can find these people practicing. Practices consisted of hard workouts and light workouts. For example, the mile loop three times at the Edgar County Cemetery was one of the hardest practices. Unfortunately track members suffered through this more than once. These many hard practices paid off though. The boys and girls were well in shape by the end of the season, both groups having their share of wins and losses. An example of this would be the Apollo Conference. This was the hardest meet through the season. Even though there were hard workouts, there were light workouts. Running sprints for twenty minutes would be considered one of our hardest workouts of the year. These sprints paid off for Boys Track member Todd Vlahos, who placed at the Boys Sectional in Champaign. You could ask any boy and girl what was the best part and they both would agree the bus rides were the most fun. An average bus trip would consist of trying to sing, eating, and bugging the coach. And most of the boys and girls would say the worst part would be losing. But losing to Marshall and Charleston was the worst losses for both teams. Even though they are both individual teams they worked together. By working together they helped one another work out the kinks in their events. Mr. Postlewait and Mr. Fear and Mr. Craig, without these people there would not be a team. They are dedicated just as much as the boys and girls. When you need extra help anyone of these three would help you. Track as a whole is a fun sport, but a hard working sport. By the end of the season you know where your strengths and weaknesses are. If you love a challenge, try track. The 1988 Girls Track members are Michelle Ball, Chryssie Michaels, Jane Anderson. Angela Staley, Ann Winegar, Michelle Staley, and Kelly Kraemer. After a mile through the cemetery up and down hills Chryssie Michaels, Michelle Staley, and Kelly Kraemew take a break. Jumping hurdles isn’t hard for Chryssie Michaels. Sam Gross and Cheri Stikeweitiz say: it is No Problem for them to get comfortable on the bus ride home from Mt. Zion. Sports 55 Brittany Dunn starts the match with one of her spectacular serves. Becky Woltman, Susan Barnes. Tami Cooley, Lisa Joseph, Missy Lynch. Front Row is Angel Newman, Cathy Anderson, Amy Payne, Kim White, Darci Kuhn, Brittany Dunn. Darci Kuhn lets loose of the winning pitch. The girls softball team had a great season this year. For Paris only having had a softball team for two years, the girls have really showed their athletic ability in the sport. This year a new coach (Avenati) was brought into the picture and he spent long hours practicing with the girls in order to improve their skills. The long hours did pay off as the girls had a good season. The girls really pulled together when the chips were down to make it through some of the worst situations. The teams played with great enthusiasm and confidence. When the chips were down and we were behind the team pulled together and helped boost each other's confidence to make the very best of the worst situations. At almost every game students and parents turned out in full force to cheer the Tigers on to victory. One of the most exciting games was the home game against the Charleston Trojans. Carloads of students turned out ready to spend the entire day at Laker Stadium cheering on their classmates. The boys played to the best of their ability to give the Tigers a great season. 58 Boys Baseball Kirk Jones makes a great play as he takes the runner on first out. Phil Goodman, determined to win the game. Troy Sanders warms up behind the dugout. Brad Stuck is safe at third. A picture is worth a thousand words, what else can I say. No matter where each of us are or what we become we will always have memories of our high school years together. Nobody will forget the first day of high school; for most of us, it was frightening and yet we walked through those high school doors for the first time with much anticipation Along with the anticipation of high school also came the frightening experiences of being called greenies, and even those fun-loving initiations of pushing pennies with our noses that only the upperclassmen enjoyed. All of that changed this year as those frightening freshmen became the Seniors of 1988 and we were the ones doing the initiating. As underclassmen as well as upperclassmen we proved our class spirit over and over as the girls won the Powder Puff game three years in a row. The same three years the girls won the Powder Puff game, the Class of 1988 pulled together to win the class games of Homecoming. This year our school spirit showed through again as we were entertained by those fun-loving Blues Brothers, Danny Spillman and Kenny Dishon. We certainly can't forget all the senior guys pulling together to ride that famous “roller coaster.'1 The Seniors of 1988 are not only fun-spirited people but are also academically inclined as well. Some classmate was always around if one of us needed help on that tough calculus problem or those Spanish class assignments that called for several study sessions — Spanish Sponge Parties. The Senior Band members will have the memories of the hard work it took to prepare for the Aloha Bowl and the fun-times spent after arriving in Hawaii the Christmas of 1984. If Mr V’s famous words are true you are our future” then the Class of 1988 will provide a bright one!! Are you ready for a wild and crazy ride? The 1988 Senior Class officers are President — Brad King, Vice-President — Tim McDaniel. Secretary — Katie Rooney and Treasurer — Brittany Dunn. The Class of 1988's last float parades down main street. Brittany Dunn and Kenny Dishon down around in Mr. Walter's office. Amy Payne and David Summers have always showed a high' Spirit for sports. John Pearman and Kim Piper pose as mannequins to keep us up to date on the latest fashions. Seniors 63 Are Janie Anderson and Marty really going to become successful janitors? Missy Mattingly doesn't seem too friendly to Tony Kispert even though together they were elected friendliest couple. Shane Lankster and Denita Irwin are hooked at the arm and later at the altar. The Juniors once again began tackling the big expense of prom, but first things first... The class tried and tried to win something in this year's class games. The float that they put so much effort into came in last. The powder puff team did everything possible to stop the seniors. They even replaced their front line with the experts; Mark Cox, Brad Stuck, and Kirk Jones. This move was to no avail because once again, the class of 1989 came in last. Finally the juniors got things rolling at winter carnival class games, as they tied the seniors for total points. Watch out world the juniors have finally been motivated, maybe next year we ll be the class to beat. Not only will the juniors have won their last class games, but next year they will be SENIORS. Michelle Pustelniak asks Kathy Parrish and Georganna Winkler. Is this P.E. or studyhall? The 1987-88 class officers are: Robin Mewes Secretary, Lisa Cerra President, Jami Comingore Treasurer. All 216 Sophomores have spent countless hours waiting for their drivers licenses this year. They have each sat through nine weeks of drivers education watching films, getting their eyes tested and learning the many signs and symbols associated with driving a car. After completing the classroom, portion of drivers ed. and receiving their white slips they were finally allowed to drive. While driving, some of them may have encountered many new and different things such as Coach Gosnell, Coach Punzelt, or Coach Bruner pressing down on the brake to keep them from running a red light or to stop them from colliding into a parked vehicle. The class of 90 has become closer throughout the two years they have been together. They have done this while participating in class games, band, and many different sports. By involving themselves in these activities, they have learned to work together to accomplish the goals the have set for themselves. Hopefully, one day these goals will lead to the climax of their career, life as a Senior. While not known to P.H.S. students as the most athletic class or the class that wins the most, the sophomores are unique; they will become even more so in the next few years. 80 Sophomores Kim Carter Ginger Cary Thad Cary Amy Cheely Tami Church Ami Churchill Travis Clark Lisa Cochran Keith Collier Crystal Conine Tammy Cooley Chad Cornwell Camille Cox Tammy Crockett Hope Daniels Eric Daugherty Sheila Davidson Rochelle Delong Gayle Dewitt Corey Dittamore Josh Duke April Edwards Richard Ellingsworth Gary Facer Ron Finger Stacey Foley Bruce Frost Beverly Fulk Beth Funkhouser Billy Garver Ronald Garver Jim Geekie Debbie Gill Doug Gleckler Geri Goodman Tammy Goodman Sophomores 81 Susan Goodwin Dawn Gorman Jason Graham Josh Gray Teresa Green Eric Haddix Rebecca Haddix Tami Halloran Jennifer Hanks Era Harmon Lori Harris Michael Harris Melissa Haymaker Chandra Hayes Michael Hebermehl Morrie Heelen Kari Heidbrider Christopher Hickman Casey Hogan Amy Holloway Dawn Hoopingarner Amy Horsman Eric Hoult Lori Hunt Angela Hunter Angie Hutson Tim Inman Loretta Jernigam Sheila Jewell Amanda Jobst 82 Sophomores Stephanie Brinkerhoff must wonder How do you work this sir? Practically every greenie gets picked on the fitst couple of weeks of school: for example, writing ''greenie'' on Amanda Stepp and Brittany Witlock s faces or having Shane Calvert push candy sprees in front of the Hanger. Every year greenies endure about the same torture such as being last in line at the Hanger, being called names, carrying upperclassmen's books, or just being a greenie. After about three weeks of initiation the freshmen settle into their daily routines and know their schedules. During Homecoming, the Freshmen class took first place in the float contest. The Freshman did very well in this year's Homecoming and Winter Carnival class games, and from the looks of them, they should do very well in the future. From electing class officers early in the year to participating in the many activities P.H.S. offers, the Freshmen have really gotten involved. With their growing spirit, the class of '91 is one of a kind. J.R. The secretaries, the administration, the maintenance, and the teachers keep P.H.S. running smoothly. This year P.H.S. went through some changes. First, students became used to the newly established corrective period. From 8:15 to 8:45, students could get extra help, additional assignments, or make-up work from any teacher. Most P.H.S.'ers agree that the corrective period has been great. Teachers seem to like it too. Secondly, District 95 under went a change (somewhat) in ad ministration. Dr. Larry Leonard superintendent, left Paris in De cember to begin a new job in Vir ginia. Assistant Superintendent Mike Watts was named Acting Su perintendent. And finally, all students under went the Iowa Skills Test, unde the direction of their teachers, ast basis for next years students. Thi was a new experience for P.H.S students. These members spent the day rehearsong, then presenting the concert later that evening. This proved to be a huge success. All in all, chorus members seem to agree that it has been a great year. 117 Paris High School Swing Choir began with a group of students interested in singing and dancing. After attending camps and many practices they became a family based on trust, togetherness, and many compromises. During the years they have performed for many community and social events. Before performing, the members must decide upon a routine and it must be learned by all. The routine requires much time, patience, and ideas from everyone. Without ever participating in Swing Choir one would never know the true dedication given of sponsors Mrs. Julie Lund and Mrs. Debbie Sims. For every page in the book, layouts must be drawn, copy must be written, pictures must be fitted, and people must be identified. Some pages are then entered into a computer while others are drawn on quad paks and mailed to the printer. Many pages have art work that our staff artist, John Postlewait, spends his time drawing. Other work includes selling books, collecting money, and distributing books. Although all this is hard work we do not mind as long as we meet our main objective, creating a book of memories.
