Campus Life 11 Some Tracks Will Be Hard to Duplicate 12 After 34 years of teaching about chemistry, and life in general, Mr. John Gibson is retiring from his post at PHS. To chemistry students, Mr. Gibson, red hair and white lab coat, was a familiar sight since he has been teaching Chemistry I and II for the last 28 years. His power tests, mind boggling though they were, left a lasting impression. Mr. Gibson says he may not know how to act the first day of school next year when everyone else starts making their ways back to PHS. He and his wife, Martha, plan to travel, though, and he would like to do more woodworking. In short. Mr. Gibson plans to enjoy his retirement. “I don’t know where the time went,” commented Mr. Gibson. “I am really going to miss the people.” The people, faculty and students will miss him, too. We Dedicate This Book To Mr. Gibson and Mr. Giesler Educators In the True Sense of the Word “The Chief’ as he was called by many of his colleagues, Mr. Don Gielser was a master teacher. His American History students learned more than just facts. They discovered that history was interesting. Mr. Giesler’s dynamic lectures and his constant fairness made his class one that students remembered many years after they graduated. And, students fondly remembered Mr. Giesler: whistling down the hallways, pushing up his glasses, giving out Chinese laundry tickets, and cheerfully greeting each student. The Class of 1987 was the last class that had the pleasure of having Mr. Giesler. In the words of one senior, “Mr. Giesler also taught us courage, because despite having cancer, he gave us his best.” In February, 1987, Don Giesler lost his battle with cancer. He had been at Paris High School for 28 years, and he will be missed. Dedication 13 14 Student Body In late August of 1983, our Senior class entered Paris High School. In that same month the High School got a new Assistant Principal — Mr. Gerry Walter. Since Mr. Walter has been here for the same length of time as the Class of ’87, this year the Arena Staff asked him to write about the Senior class. Tuesday, August 24, 1983. The first day of high school. I remember thinking that the freshman class looked pretty sharp. They even acted rather mature for normal freshman “greenies.” Since I started working here two days before school started, I didn't know anyone in this building. Even the freshmen knew more people than I did. When I became Student Council sponsor I found out what a wild and crazy group the freshman class really was. Over the last four years I have learned to appreciate the talents of the Class of '87. Together we learned about Paris High School. Who are the tough teachers? What classes could be cut? We rookies learned at the same time all the important information that students need to know. Seriously, it has been my pleasure to have worked for four years with the Class of '87. They are an outstanding group of young men and women. The Class of 1987 has accomplished great things during their four years. They have brought leadership, recognition, and pride to this school, this community, and to themselves. They have made Paris High School a great place to work for these four years. Best Wishes and Good Luck to each of you! Gerry Walter, Principal b a. Ed Voeltz works hard in the library. b. Amy White, Julie Clover, Heidi Winkler. Melissa Geekic, Andrea Englcbright. and Rcnac English take Godzilla for a walk. c. SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS: Jennifer Bess— President, Stephanie Robertson — Vice President, Cyndi Dyer — Secretary, Kris Porter — Treasurer. 16 Seniors Pictured above (not in order) are this year’s Class Couples. The Class Clowns who kept the students in stitches and the teachers in tears were Jill Reel, Robbie Davis, and Art DuCharme. Brant Walls and Heidi Winkler have been inseparable for the past three years and were voted Class Couple. Most likely to be found in the arms of others are the Class Flirts — Rick Scott, Jennifer Bess, and Melissa Geekie. T. J. Coleman and Kris Porter, this year’s Most Athletic Couple, can always be found fumbling around and shooting baskets. Our Most Studious Couple, David Cerra and Andrea Englebright, spend endless hours poring over the books. Daydreaming about everything except school, Brian Furry and Darlena Seeney are our Spaciest Couple. The couple who makes attendance to parties mandatory, Julie Gill and Mark Holley, are the Life of the Party. Josh Watson and Stephanie Robertson always have the latest on the concert scene because they Never Miss a Concert. The Coolest Couple in the Senior class is Lewis Metcalf and Janie Bramlett. Last but not least, this year’s Sexiest Couple is Richie Wilson and Tracee Gore. If you ask a junior why he has accomplished these things, he will say, “We’ve got a lot of spirit!” This class is a closely knit group that definitely has a lot of fun. This class is made up of many athletes and scholars —including David Summers, Marty Sperry, and Janie Anderson, just to name a few. Having a class consisting of people such as Amy Hombrook, Elizabeth Cox, Jamie Bess, and Kara Gallaway, in the words of Toyota, “Who could ask for anything more?!” These juniors have much to look forward to in becoming a senior. They will also, of course, be looking forward to college-prep English, Physics, Anatomy, Trigonometry, and Calculus. They will be filling out college applications and struggling through Government. They are no longer considered “grccnies.” This year they have proven themselves of the name Sophomores. They have shown us their strength in class games, their sports abilities in basketball, and their spirit and pride for Paris High School in all activities. We are sure that next year will be an even better year for them as they prepare to “step right through” into the Junior class. a. This class consists of 6 students. These students leam basic daily living skills that will enable them to live semi-independently upon graduation. Their schoolwork consists of handwriting, numbers, letters, shapes, and survival signs. The TMH II class enjoys going to the library, swimming at the Y.M.C.A., playing games, and once a week a student from the art department and the music department come in to teach art and music. Sophomores 45 The First Steps Always Seem To Be The Hardest When freshmen first enter high school, they notice a big change from grade school. Freshmen realize that they do not go to class with all of the same people. They realize, too, that they must find their own ways to lunch, either going to Hardee’s, the Hangar, or downtown. Freshmen have a lot of growing up to do, but they still have several years of high school left to enjoy before they get jobs, get married, or go to college. Freshmen find they make tracks to basketball games, to dances, and throughout the halls of PHS. Pictured at the right are the officers of the Freshmen class: Scott Nebergall serves as treasurer; Tracy Quinn makes pen tracks as secretary; vice-president Adam Sperry has little to do; Laurie Trapp as president leads the class. Freshmen soon get into the groove at PHS very quickly. For example, Erica Brinkley has quickly learned the art of hall monitoring. We’re able to do more of a variety of music now.” The main activity for the chorus this year was hosting the East Central Illinois Choral Festival in the fall. Eleven choruses from around Illinois came to Paris and worked all day to prepare a concert which they presented that night. The E.C.I.C.F. concert was a huge success and Paris was congratulated for their fine job of hosting the festival. The chorus at Paris High School is getting bigger and better and will continue to grow in the years to come. During the basketball season Student Council sold orange and black net jerseys. On Valentine’s Day Student Council members were bombarded with red, pink, and white carnation sales for one of their many fund raising activities. The 1986-1987 blood drive was successful again in donating blood to people in need. The president of Student Council is Lisa Gose and is governed by Mrs. Fulk. The Student Council is able to present a scholarship to one of the many outstanding senior council members. Instead of the Student Council sponsoring the annual Winter Carnival dance, the first Sadie Hawkins Dance was held and seemed to be a big success. Student Council also sponsored the yearly Homecoming Dance and organized the fun loving class games. a. Row 1: Bev Fulk, Tracy Quinn, Lauri Trapp, Tami Halloran. With Mrs. Nelson as their sponsor, the Art Club gets involved and has a lot of fun also. On March 24, the Art Club traveled to Chicago to visit the Academy of Art and The American Art Institute. The club sold candy to earn the money for the trip, which turned out to be educational and fun for all. Members of the Art Club have also been to Champaign and Charleston for various art shows. The Art Club has also sponsored sock hops, participated in the Homecoming Parade and held a pizza party to work on Youth Art Month Posters. Art Club 97 Media Aides, Bible Club, and Key Club Meeting the Needs of Students is Goal The Fenton Knglish Library and Medical Center at Paris High School uses the volunteer sevices of about twenty students each year. This school year the library switched from a floppy disk circulation program to a hard disk program; therefore, students had the opportunity to work with and see an update in library automation. However, not every function is computerized, and students still literally get numerous chances for hands on experiences. The library handles approximately 1,000 films a year and the library aides are always actively helping with preparing these films for classroom use or returning the films to the film base. The aides also help with study hall library patrons, prepare new magazines and books for use, put away materials, deliver equipment to classrooms and run errands. This year’s library aides are first row: Laura Fleming, Susan Barnes, Angie McDaniel, Mrs. Fulk. Second row: Librarian Mrs. Addis, Kelly Livesay, Angie Baroni, Amy White. Third row: Jennifer Robert, Kile Mathews, Jim Comingor, David Summers, Regina Swanson. Missy Creech and Jennifer Roberts take over and put Jim Comingor in the book deposit box. Bible Club is a club that is open to and welcomes any student who is interested. Students take turns in leading the group in a devotional or studying a passage in the Bible. Bible Club meets in room 31 every Tuesday morning at 8:00. This year’s Bible Club members are: Row one: Brad Rollings, Billy Garver, Jim Blue, David Garver, Billy Marlowe, and sponsor Mr. Cheat-tarn. Row two: Laura Luce, Tammy Goodman and third row Gerie Goodman. Key Club is a service organization that strives to better the community through its efforts. Whether it be helping with the Paris Brotherhood Tree or awarding a $1000 scholarship to a deserving senior; Key Club works for the community. Key Club has a roster of 20 hard working individuals who are always ready to donate time and energy towards a good cause. Sister Club to the Kiwanis Early Risers and the Noon Club, group projects occur often. Such as the Pancake tent and the German tent at the Honeybee Festival. This 1986-87 team set a new nine hole record of 151 and a new 18 hole record of 311. This team also won first place in the Apollo Conference. Some of the leaders of this team were Chad Gann, medalist in the Apollo Conference, and Jamie Mercer, who represented Paris in the state tournament. Then, too, Mark Holley and Dan Bruner hung in there to keep Paris at the top. These achievements and wins did not come easily for this team. “The group of seniors we have this year are very dedicated,” said Mark Holley. “All of us worked very hard and practiced nearly every day during the summer.” Although the seniors played a very important role this season, Mr. Bruner commented that this golf team includes much young talent including John Geekie, Scott Frazier, and others. The End of The Season Brings Hope For a New Beginning This year, the varsity football team made tracks when they broke a 32-game loosing streak by defeating the Taylorville Tornadoes 28-20. As the seniors of the team could tell you, the game meant a great deal. It was a home game, organized football. Throughout the season, the coaches never lost faith in the team and the team never stopped fighting. As coach Corey told the team, “You are all winners and winners never stop fighting.” The season started August eighteenth at the Paris Football Camp. The camp was a grueling week where nearly 80 boys had three practices a day in ninety degree heat. Paris played commend-ably during the first three games and nearly came away with wins in all of them including Marshall, Westville, and Charleston. The scores during the next four games do not show the desire and would work even harder. As Coach Corey would say, “We have Paris Pride.” Everything came together for Paris in the last game when both Terry Gates and T. J. Coleman scored two touchdowns each. Congratulations on your win, Paris, you deserve it! Victory Is Sweet! 104 Football a. Manager, J. Pine, B. Marlowe, K. Magers, N. Cusick, B. Sheehy, E. Hoult, T. Mattingly, M. Wacaser, M. Ogle, T. They found out the feeling of losing and also the feeling of winning. As Coach Corey would say, “Let’s chalk this game up to experience.” During the next three years, these young football players will grow and mature. They will learn all of the famous Corey “quotes,” such as, “Suck it up”, “Don’t go through the motions”, and “They’re ripe.” These athletes will remember the words for the rest of their lives. Whenever the life of a Paris football player seems down, he will be able to “suck it up” and keep on driving to become better and better. If these boys learn nothing else, they will learn that if you want something, you must work for it and that nothing in life comes easy. The next few years for these young men look very promising. Because of the year-round weightlifting program, they will be better prepared and closer to each other so that next season they will walk out on that field ready to play football. a. Some members of the team also placed respectively in the sectional tournament including Amy Wright and Linda Humphrey. These two young ladies and other seniors, such as Regina Swanson and Annette Parrish, provided a stable leadership for the team. During the year, some new faces on the team made themselves known such as Marci Conger and Betsy Wright. These girls helped greatly during a few close matches to put the team on top. The future of the girls tennis looks very promising because these girls begin running and getting in shape long before tennis season starts. As anyone may tell you, Paris takes its basketball seriously; consequently, Paris is known throughout the Apollo Conference as having a basketball team that deserves great respect. Throughout the past three years, the boys varsity team has fought hard and has won the Regional Championship all three years. Only hard work, dedication, and respect for their leader. Coach Fulk, has given these young men the recognition that they deserve. Not only has the boys varsity team earned the respect of Paris fans, but also the girls basketball team and the boys junior varsity team have made themselves known as teams with talent and potential for greatness. During the season, some of the Tigers made themselves known. For example, Kris Porter, the only senior girl on the team, set a new PHS record by scoring 1173 points in her varsity basketball career. Also, Brent Fulk, sophomore, led Paris with 329 points for the season and was named to the All-Apollo Conference team. Even with their many talented players and their well deserved victories, the coaches of these teams would say that this was a building year for Paris basketball. Basketball 113 After having a slow start this season by losing their first six games, the tiger boys fought back late in the season to claim their third regional championship in a row. Of the three championships, the one this season was the toughest to obtain since last year five of the top players on the team graduated. The high point again this year was the tigers' tremendous victory over Charleston in the regional finals after losing to Charleston in the regular season. It seemed as if the whole school attended and participated in this game against our major rival. This Charleston confrontation was the first of two big victories to take the tiger boys to the sectional games against Massac County. The boys were again stopped this year in the sectional tournament; however, this has not discouraged the team, coaches, or fans because of the great amount of pride and respect for tiger basketball. Even with a third regional championship, this has been labeled a growing year for boys basketball so watch out! Better times are yet to come. ■■i 114 Paris Newton Paris Effingham Paris Danville Paris ■ ;Gcorgclov n Par Cnrisman Paris Weslvillc Paris Weslvillc Paris Lawrence Paris Marshall FRESHMAN BASKETBALL SCORES 56 Paris 41 South Vermillion 48 Paris 54 Charleston 40 Paris Newton Paris SOPHOM( RE BASKETBALL SCOR 28 31 38 60 55 65 41 50 60 55 43 48 58 57 49 58 Paris Casey Paris Robinson Paris Lawrcnccville Paris Effingham Paris Taylorv Paris Charle Paris J Ncwtoi Pans Marshall 61 Paris 39 Jamaica jFari'' Cnrisman 58 34 58 43 48 65 57 SUpiK MORI BASKETBALLSCORES inson 64 Pans 55 Charleston 58 Paris 35 Newton 56 Paris 64 Taylorvillc 67 Paris 40 Ml. Basketball 115 Lady Tigers Take Steps Toward Greatness Like the boys varsity team, the girls team was faced with a rebuilding year. The majority of the girls team was made of underclassmen with one lone senior, Kris Porter. Even though the lady Tigers are a young ball club, they finished this season with a winning record of 14-7. Coach Steve Terrell stated, “The girls have done a good job this season. We had 10 games in the last 14 days on the regular season and came out with a 7-3 record in that time.” Obviously, in the next few years, great things are in store for this young team. Some of the Lady Tigers had an outstanding year including Kris Porter who set a new Paris High School record by scoring 1173 points and was named to the All-Apollo Conference team. Other Lady Tigers were also honored including Amy Paine as winner of the Effort Award and Codi Willis as a member of the Apollo Honorable Mention Team. These and many other talented freshmen, sophomores, and juniors will be making themselves known in the years to come. 116 Girl’s Basketball a. For the first time P.H.S. had a ten-member Varsity squad, and they were ten very hard working and dedicated cheerleaders. They began the season by attending camp at Dekalb. Both Varsity and Junior Varsity squads did exceptionally well and were invited to compete at the U.S.C.A. Nationals. Eleanor Atienza was named outstanding individual, and Co-Captain Jill Holloway and Stephanie Robertson were named All-American Cheerleaders out of all the squads at camp. In November the Varsity received the first place cheerleading trophy in the Turkey Tournament at Effingham. The Cheerleaders also competed in the I.C.C.A. State finals at Illinois State University in Bloomington. The competition was phenomenal, but the Cheerleaders pulled together once again and dazzled the judges with seventh place title for Varsity and a fabulous fourth place for Junior Varsity. Jill Holloway was named sixth place Cheerleader in the state. No sooner was state competition over, until the Varsity began preparing for World Competition in Chicago. Only the best Cheerleaders in the nation ever qualify to compete for World and they represented Paris well by taking an outstanding third place and qualifing to go to Australia. It was an exciting year from cheering at football games and seeing the first football victory in years to enthusiastically supporting a terrific basketball team to the sectional tournament at Benton. They were a super group and together with the teams and fans helped put the “Pride” back in Paris. b 120 Cheerleaders Ill I«. d a. Edgar ihc Tiger butters-up the referee. b. Dowd — alias Jacob Gent to Paris High School students — was, of course, named Harvey. Yes, the Paris Players’ fall production this year was Harvey, that timeless story of imagination and optimism where an invisible rabbit actually steals the show. Throughout the week we saw many students dressed in the chosen color of that day as Monday was blue day, Tuesday — green day, Wednesday — rainbow day, Thursday — red day, and Friday being orange and black day. The real class spirit was shown through the class games students participated in Friday at the pep assembly. The juniors came in First to hold their athletic title, as the seniors placed second, freshmen placed third with the sophomores coming in last. At the varsity game Friday evening, the suspense of who would become king and queen was told. Stephanie Robertson and Brant Walls were elected queen and king as Melinda Atienza and T. J. Coleman were the First attendants. To end the week-long festivities a Sadie Hawkins Dance was held on Saturday evening. This dance allowed the girls to ask the guy of their choice out that particular evening. Winter Carnival showed the true spirit of Paris High School. Winter Carnival 135 A Senior Girl Remembers May Fete May Fete — the night that every girl waits for front the time she enters high school. On May 1, we. the senior girls of the Class of 1987, finally had our night. As 1 stood in the girl’s gym waiting to walk in, I could hardly believe the night had finally come. I was no longer one of the performers standing hugging the senior girls — I was the one being hugged. Suddenly, the line moved and it was my turn to walk in. The spotlight appeared, my name was called, and I moved forward into my seat. As I sat watching the junior court and their escorts walk in, my mind went back to the first May Fete I participated in and the excitement I felt as the lights came on and the music to “Pink Panther” began. The memory was so clear that I could not believe that was four years ago. My thoughts returned to the evening at hand when we all stood up as Jennifer Bess, the 1987 May Fete Queen, entered the gym and took her seat. The song to the Queen was performed and then the theme song, “As Time Goes By” was presented. Both numbers provoked thoughts of childhood, and the things I would be missing only a month later. When the dances began, still other thoughts of years past crossed my mind. The dances were designed to trace all our lives from childhood to maturity. Just as “Kids” caused me to think of fond memories of playing outside on swings and climbing trees, Happy Birthday Sweet Sixteen” reminded me of the excitement of receiving my license and being able to drive myself places. Yakkity-Yak” brought with it memories of past disagreements with my parents that seemed so terrible at the time and Matchmaker” brought back fond memories of crushes and first dates. All too soon the final number was performed and we walked away from our seats and lined up along the fence. There, as “Sunrise, Sunset” was being performed by the Swing Choir, I had time for a few last private thoughts about my friends I cared so much for, my teachers who had helped me for four long years, and my parents who lovingly watched over me all my life. I had time to realize how much I would miss all of the special people and as I walked out of the gym my smiles turned to tears. Reflecting on that special night, I now find how appropriate the front and back cover of the program was. On the front, a little girl stands on a swing with pigtails and not a care in the world. Looking to the back cover, the little girl is gone and the swing hangs empty and still. Until I walked into the gym on May Fete night I still felt very young in some ways. After that night I knew that we were all young adults and that we would be facing the world in a few brief months. May Fete night I felt that I lost my childhood swing, yet it was a night I will never forget. 136 May Fete d a. Playing the famous Conrad Birdie, Billy Marlowe gave a marvelous performance, showing not only fine acting ability but also remarkable flexibility! Todd Marshall, Erica Brinkley, Melinda Wright, and Melanie Bailey also gave very noteable performances and added a lot to the production. PHS Class of’87 Moves On One hundred eighty-three Paris High School seniors awoke on June 6 with memories of a perfect graduation evening as Pans High School District 95 conducted its 113th high school commencement ceremonies held Friday June 5, 1987 in Eveland Gym. Comfortable weather enabled the capacity audience of parents, family and friends to equally enjoy the program along with the stars of the evening, the graduates. Jennifer Bess, president of the Class of 1987, was first to receive her diploma, and then called each succeeding class member to the stage to receive the evidence of graduation from school board president Monty Raley. A brief program preceded the conferring of diplomas. It started with a welcome and thank you to the parents and family members present by Miss Bess, followed by invocation by Karl Marshall. After the invocation senior girls of the high school chorus offered an appropriate “Farewell Song. Principal Gerald Walter read a congratulatory message to the class from President Ronald Reagan, and presented presidential academic fitness awards and trophies on behalf of the school district to the four class leaders, valedictorian Melissa Bailey, Andrea Englebright and John Kreckman, and salutatorian Julie Goodman. Board president Raley introduced the top 10 percent of the senior class who will receive “final honors” certificates from the board of education, and District 95 superintendent Dr. Larry Leonard formally presented the class for its diploma. All the members of the Class of 1987 are to be congratulated for their hard work for the past four years. We hope they all go far in the future. 148 Graduation Speeches were given commencement night by valedictorian John Kreckman and salutatorian Julie Goodman. Julie spoke of her pride in Paris High School. Our fine band and improving football team were among the things she mentioned that make our school one of which students can be proud. Julie also honored the late Don Giesler, history teacher at Paris High School for 30 years, as a teacher who turned a “dry” subject into a fun and exciting class. John centered his speech around responsibility. He brought out the fact that up until now we students have been given responsibility, but next year we have chosen to take responsibility as we begin cur lives after high school. Both speeches were very appropriate and only added to the pride that graduates felt on their very special commencement night. a.
