When Mr. Leonard announced the theme of the school year for the very first time, many students were standing on the lawn of the Citizen’s National Bank welcoming home our cheerleaders as National Guard Champions. The Arena Staff, who work as a group year round, decided Together We Can would be an appropriate theme for the 1985 yearbook. So, as you look through the variety of pictures and read the stories, see how many times you can remember doing things together. a. The Board of Education, Mr. Leonard, Mr. Watts, Mr. Gordon, and Mr. Walter really do have our best interests at heart. They support our activities and achievements. We see them not just during the school day, but at ballgames, banquets, and concerts. The administrators are all part of the team that makes Paris Hiqh School work. Faculty Administration 7 “I am proud to be a part of the Paris school system!” Together We Can! the theme adopted for the 1984-85 Arena was created by Larry Leonard, the superintendent of District 95. Mr. Leonard moved to Paris this year because he liked the size of Paris and its school district. His wife is a special education teacher and is presently employed by the Human Resource Center. Mr. Leonard feels that school is an organiztion of people and that those people must be respected. Also, Mr. Leonard wants the students to feel at home in school and to learn to the maximum of their ability. Increased academic achievement is one goal that Mr. Leonard would like to see accomplished. Spreading the feeling of togetherness also constitutes Mr. Leonard's personal philosophy because he repeatedly stated, I am proud to be a part of the Paris school system! Working and playing together, the 1985 Senior Class survived their four years at Paris High School. According to Stephanie Lund, This is the hardest year ever. In order to graduate many Seniors would gather in the Library before school, so that they could compare the daily news for Contemporary Problems, or study for the unit tests in Government. As the Senior year gradually came to a close, the big question in most Seniors' minds was, What am I going to do with the rest of my life?” This is the time when we decide whether high school was real ly worth the effort. a. Together for one of the last times — the Class of 85! 33 Three Down — One to Go! We’re Finally Juniors In the junior year students begin to realize that they will soon be leaving the safe and carefree environment of school. They take important tests and frequently see Mr. Jones and Mrs. Badertscher, who try to help decide in what direction his life should go! At this point in a high school career a junior finds himself still making friends, even with the gross underclassmen. The friends that juniors had as a freshman are still loyal. You're not a greenie any more but you aren't quite an upperclassman either. As a sophomore you take your first real step toward adulthood by getting your license, which gives you a new sense of freedom. By this time you have found the social niche that you best fit into. You learn to get along with classmates whom you may never have gotten along with before. In this transitional period, you grow as a human being and begin to expand your views by looking toward a more productive future. Everything moves into focus as the year progresses, and you acquire the experience and skills to make the decisions necessary to progress on through your high school years. a. Could you have spoken Latin with the Romans? If you can answer “yes” to any of these questions, then thank Miss Anderson, Miss Earlywine, or Mrs. Weir. French, Spanish, and Latin Clubs have been very active both collectively and separately this year. For example, the French and Spanish clubs started the year with a get acquainted party and scavenger hunt. During Open House, all three clubs brought food typifying the native land and created a festive atmosphere. Before Christmas, the three clubs again combined to present a Christmas program at Lakeridge Christian Church. Each club had members read in its respective language and read in English about native Christmas customs of the foreign land. At the annual Foreign Language Night, the French, Spanish, and Latin Clubs presented many humorous skits. Finally, to end the year, Senior members of the French and Spanish Clubs are traveling to King s Island for one last activity together. Thank you Miss Anderson, Miss Earlywine, and Mrs. Weir. They set records for most wins in a season, most wins in a row with a 19 game winning streak and least losses of any season. Seniors Chris Buske; JoAnn Barnes, Sandy Simmons, Cindy Whittemore, Cris Conrad, and Karla Cunningham under the guidance of coaches Steve Terrell, Marlene Pellum, and Susan LeSage, steered the team to an Apollo Conference Championship for the 2nd year in a row. The show ws a huge success with over 1300 people in attendance during the three performances. The play centers around an English school teacher. Anna Leonowens, and her young son, Louis, who came to Siam after being hired by the King to teach his wives and the royal children. The two clash from the moment they meet due to their differing beliefs in many things. The play comes to a climax when the King is ready to whip one of his many women for trying to run away with another man. Anna stands up to the King. He backs down, causing him to feel that he is a weak leader and a failure as a King. Kyle Witmer did a superb job as a King struggling between the ways he was taught and what he is now discovering. Jennifer Ludington was also excellent as a young woman who could not understand the ways of Siam or the King. The play included several other people who did a marvelous job in helping to bring the play to life. They were. Lorra Wacaser as Lady Thiang, the King's head wife. Todd Marshall as the Kralahone, the King's best friend. Laura Stanfield as Tuptim. a young girl who is a gift to the King from the Prince of Burma. The Student Council, however, does do much to benefit the PHS students and even the community. Council members serve as guides during Freshmen Orientation and during Open House. Winter Carnival, a Council sponsored event, has become a welcome tradition during basketball season. This year, the Council despite terrible weather, carried on another extremely popular event — Las Vegas Night. Presenting canned food and a check to the Community Nurse during the Talent Show brings the community and the school together. Also showing that students are concerned with our community and others, this year the Student Council sponsored a Blood Drive which netted approximately 70 pints of blood. While student government, the Student Council, does receive its share of criticism we think it doesn't get enough of the praise it deserves. It might be graduation practices or strange personalities. As the pictures show the end of the year causes certain students to stand on their heads, on hopes that all the knowledge they learned will fall out; and also causes students to do last minute cleaning of the school walls. The end of the year also causes teachers to finally realize that their desks were honestly a mess. Good luck to all graduating seniors and to the returning underclassmen, and of course to the administrators and faculty of PHS. End 181 -A- Abernathy, Gory 18 Ackerman. Mr Dwane 10. 72 Adams.
