Text from Pages 1 - 184 of the 1984 volume:

Year Together The 1983-84 school season began the 3rd of August. The weather was unseasonably warm and because the old windows were replaced with new, the air wasn’t able to circulate; therefore, students and teachers tried to limit activities and keep cool. Two PHS staff members. Mr. Eggleston and Mrs. Kern, retired at the start of school. Both teachers taught at the high school for many years and they will be missed. We also welcomed two new administrators to Paris High School. Mr. Gordon, new principal, and Mr. Walter, new vice principal. Most of us tend to remember the highlights of our high school years, and we tend to forget the “little things that have happened. We forget Things such as homework assignments, morning announcements, and lunch hours. The 1983-84 Yearbook Staff invites you to remember these “little” memories and Spend the Year Together. 2 a. The parade was held on a Saturday morning this year, breaking the old tradition of having it on Friday afternoon. Many Paris fans and students turned out to see the Tigers play a thrilling game. One group of people who almost literally spend the year together are the cheerleaders. Daily practices, both during the summer and the school year, are essential for perfecting cheers and routines. This year, the “togetherness paid off. At camp, the varsity cheerleaders placed 1st overall, while Kim Gose, Angi Bruce, and Lisa Brecht placed 1st, 3rd, and 4th respectively for individual performances. At national competition, the varsity cheerleaders placed 26th overall and Kim was the 31st placed individual. The J.V. cheerleaders did equally well. At their camp, they walked away as the 2nd place overall squad. Rachel Young was the 2nd place individual and Catrina DeVillez placed 5th. The J.V.'s earned 11th place at their nationals while Catrina ranked 50th out of all. e. 19 Support Comes From Frosh Cheerleaders Like Varsity and J.V. Cheerleaders, the freshmen join in the competitions, working very hard and earning various awards. The squad placed 1st both at camp and at ISU competition. This was the band's second appearance at a Bear's game in as many years. The only high school band ever to be invited back to Soldier Field, the Tigers prepared an extra-special show including the songs “Eye of the Tiger, “Fame,” “In the Mood, and “What I Did for Love. Mr. Alan Horney arranged the music and Gary Smith of the University of Illinois wrote the show itself. Despite the icy rainfall and bone-chilling cold that accompanied half-time, the band and flag girls performed admirably. Their performance was topped off with releasing two thousand orange balloons by four football players who joined the band on the trip specifically for this job. After the show, band members watched the Bears win their game and loaded the bus for the trip home. The kids had more than earned their dinner, which was served at the Redwood Inn in Kankakee. 25 PHS Band and Drill Team Hits the Road a. Let’s get the show on the road. b. Strike up the band, c. Let’s Spend the Year With Music There are many different musical groups at Paris High School. The 1983-84 school year saw a great increase in Chorus membership. Chorus is one of the more popular groups at P.H.S. There is a good reason for this. Chorus members have a lot of fun. They took their annual Turkey Run trip in May. In addition, members enjoyed pizza skating party. But it's not all fun and games. The Chorus worked very hard to prepare for their Christmas Vespers and Spring Concerts. During the fall, the entire Chorus participated in the East Central Illinois Choral Festival in Mattoon. In the Spring, several members competed in the Solo Ensemble Contest at Olney Central College The senior girl chorus members sang a final song at graduation. a Laura Stanfield performs for the Talent Show b Chorus students practice during 7th hour c CHORUS — 1st Row L Swanson. Dana Wooten was elected as the first woman president of the FFA chapter last spring after a year as the Chapter's secretary. “I decided to run for the office because I thought a girl could do a good job and because I wanted to be president.” Another reason, she admits, is that she is shy. Being president makes me interact with people more, and I needed help with that, she said. Dana had a big job, since the Paris FFA is very active. The FFA at Paris High School is one of the largest organizations in the school and in Illinois. Every member of the Paris FFA Chapter is taking an agriculture class, ranging from Ag Mechanics to Horticulture. The Paris FFA Chapter strives to develop leadership and responsibility for the students which they will need throughout their lives. Classroom participation and parliamentary procedure aided in developing these qualities. The FFA encourages its members to actively participate in money making projects. Making or losing money depends on decisions these students have made. There are also opportunities in agriculture through the Supervised Occupational Experience Programs and in the many contests that they participate in. These aid in the future development of these students. There are many contests and other activities in the FFA. These include tractor driving, crop judging, livestock judging, milk judging, horse judging and many others. 58 FHA members pictured above are: Front Row: Kim Revell. Karen Stewart. Lisa Morrisey. During the 1984 candelight ceremony, a total of seventeen juniors and seven seniors were initiated into the society. According to Mr. Cheatham, the requirements of the Paris chapter are tough compared to other chapters. Juniors must have at least a 4.6 grade point average while seniors are required to have a 4.4 GPA. The officers of the 1984-85 National Honor Society are Julie Harmon, president: Stacy Smithson, vice-president: Doug Good, secretary; and Pamela Martin, treasurer. In addition to the initiation of National Honor Society members, students earning honor letters were awarded for their academic excellence at the banquet. To receive an honor letter, students are required to have a GPA of 4.4 for at least three of the four quarters of the academic year. Overall, a great number of PHS students achieved academic excellence this year. a 76 a FOUR YEAR HONOR LETTERS — 1st Row: Dana Campbell. Lisa Brecht. Donna Belue. Sarah Hawbecker. Stephanie Barath. Students at Paris High were honored with the presence of United States Senator Charles Percy who spoke about today’s relevant issues. Student Council President Lori Berry is pictured with Sen. Percy and Rep. Babe Woodyard. Miss Berry was also a member of the award-winning JETS TEAM (Junior Engineering Technical Society). The team took 1st place in District and 3rd place in the sectional competition. With advancing technology, computers at PHS became more prevalent. Shelton Frey demonstrates the library’s new computer system. Also, record numbers of students enrolled in computer classes, proving that teachers and students alike have become part of the computer generation. Besides computers, teachers found a variety of ways to keep their students interested in learning. Here. Mr. Mike Postlewaite “demonstrates” the Civil War for Mr. Giesler's classes. The list of names on the Honor Roll contained the names of about 1 5 of PHS’s total student population. Yet, while the students worked diligently, there was still time for a little fun between learning and tests. 111 SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS — Erin Breneman. This year’s juniors are as diverse as other classes are. Some are athletic, some studious, some musical, some are artistic, some only exist. A few people in the junior class have distinguished themselves in really special ways. Loretta Ford and Maria Strow are full time students and full time wives. Stacy Smithson is a full time student and a professional musician. JUNIOR CLASS OFFICERS — Pam Martin — secretary, Gail Frost — treasurer. Eric Lawson — vice-president, Frank Reely — president. Continuing their show of spirit, the sophomores participated with great enthusiasm in the Winter Carnival activities. The sophomores are highly active in many extra curricular activities. A good portion of the sophomores participate in the band, as well as in the numerous athletic programs. Not to slight academics, the sophomores maintain an extensive honor roll list. Unlike many other classes, the excitement of high school has not yet worn off for the Class of '86. Allen FRESHMAN CLASS OFFICERS - Melinda Atienza — president, Teri Terrell — secretary, Judi Jo Boewe — vice-president. Bryce Sutton — treasurer Not pictured is Mr. Bruner, class sponsor. Being a freshman is an ordeal everyone must go through. The camaraderie that develops among the members of the freshman class greatly aids the adjustment process. This year's freshman class showed their prowess by winning every contest during Homecoming Week. They captured 1st place in both the float and class games competition. Many freshmen participated in school activities, which made them feel more like a Paris High student. Although each class is unique in itself, most of them have at least a few things in common. Most freshmen display a zealousness towards school that tends to wear off as the years go by. The 1983-84 freshman class was like many of the others before, in that their school spirit was abundant. Hopefully, they will keep that spirit afire all through their high school days. 152 You Know It’s the End of the Year When ... ... the calendar has very few days left on it ... students don’t wear shoes ... students clean out their lockers ... seniors try on caps ...
