OUR TIGER HOURS The Paris High School annual — The Arena — presents to the reader a panorama of the school year of 1963, when TIME was a factor while trying to encompass events of the year. Yet, there was TIME for study, for fun, for physical development, for building of character, and for a wholesome school life. Our school is representative of the good things found in schools all over our great, good, and bountiful nation, the United States. Enrollment ............. 940 Faculty.................... 47 2 PRINCIPAL JOHN P. ALLEN IN MEMORIAM PAULETTE CAROLE BROOKS IN MEMORIAM MARY MARGARET MARNE’ LUTZ The 1963-1964 Paris High School basketball season closed with tragedy on Thursday evening, March 12. Our school principal, John P. Allen, and varsity cheerleaders Paulette Carole Brooks and Mary Margaret Marni Lutz, returning from the Bridgeport Sectional Tournament lost their lives as a result of a post-game head-on crash. Could these friends speak to us, they would say with the poet Tennyson: Sunset and evening star, And one clear call for me! And may there be no moaning of the bar, As I put out to sea, I'WtK SENIORS PRESIDENT Gene Barkley SECRETARY David Pasero VICE PRESIDENT Alan Shontze TREASURER Steve Lutz SPONSORS: Mrs. Louise Honnold Mr. Bret Brown So the senior year ends— And to our friends we bid good-by. Sue Hunt is still 'Hunting' . . . and 'Hunting'. . . and 'Hunting'. Sandy Hurst sings beautiful songs to her patients at Paris Hospital—which Paris? Yes, Phil Hutchings is still looking for a job, as an actor. To make money Phil races Hondas. Harvey Inman has a good time accounting. As an avocation, Harvey is an expert on bank robberies. Druggist Robert Jewell cures or kills P.H.S. tigers— depends on wins and losses. An invitation from Maurice Johnson reads: 'Sail Along with Me.' Guests take precautions when riding in Maurice's tiny tug-boat. Gayla Jordan is secretary at the G.A.A. headquarters office. So handy is David Kelsheimer with a drill, but be careful about allowing him to fix your teeth. Cheryl Kirby is owner of the See-All, Know-All beauty salon. On our way to the tenth anniversary celebration, we passed Linda Knecht and her famous horses on 'Route 66'—headed for the Kentucky Derby. Who? Steve Knight? The Steve who wanted to be a forest ranger? He ranges the forests looking for young ladies in distress. Up and coming back—Doug Kupke built the U.S. monument used to greet immigrants from outer space. The motto in Tom Land's machine shop is 'Fix it not yourself, let Tom.' Tom Landsaw collects beautiful models—model cars. You mean the electrically charged Larry Larrance? Someone heard Steve Lutz explaining to his children that he is a play boy—whatever that is. Adonna Magers is still taking college classes. There is a reward offered to anyone who discovers where Adonna takes these classes. Yes, that is Gene Merchant's Marine Material Market on the corner. Whoever dreamed that Mike Martin would someday win an award as the powerhouse of the athletic world. Lindy Mattingly sits down on her job and on her boss, Mr. Sam Squash, too. Cindy is Squash's private secretary. Time and life saving methods are the pride and joy of Nick Mayback's life. Don Maynard is the understudy for the Maynard on the Dobie Gillis show. Parisian Lane's new owner? John Mercer bought the bowler's paradise for his own private use. Charles Miller still thinks he should keep his stock (cars) in the cattle barn. And Cheryl Miller likes to keep things moving—from tricycles to gray Corvairs. A second Sir Walter Raleigh, Keith Miller has established the first modern underwater colony in America. There is even running water. When last seen, Denny Moeller was on his way to England to try to convince Queen Elizabeth II that football is the world's most important sport. Alert people can hear the famous song 'Motorcycle Built for Two'—when Tom Morris walks by. Majorette Martha Murphy learned to 'keep in step;' now she helps others learn, too. Martha is a policewoman. In Elbridge, Illinois, we find Lee McClelland half-owner and proprietor of a small country store. Joe McDaniell? You would never guess. Joe owns a shop for tall boys and offers free sympathy as a bonus. As for Josie McDaniel, she is the happiest girl in her family—she is married and has all boys. Tom McDaniel is a good 'drawer,' but will never match Mat Dillon. They say Greg McHenry will go down in history, but we hope he keeps his other grades 'up.' The Lady of the Day, Ruth Ellen McKinney, belongs to today. Arvin Ron McKinney sells Avon products as a sideline line. Kenneth Nail has expressed his likings for that old song, 'If I Had a Hammer.' An excellent act is now produced by Martha Nelson, together with relative Ricky Nelson. Angler Tom Nicholson really caught 'it'—the fish, that is. We hear that Mary Niles, always interested in medicine, is teaching Dr. Casey new words. Mary Ogle has to 'account' for her future; she is an accountant. Did you know that Sandra O'Hair is camp counselor for the Girl Scouts on the moon? Too, Mary Onrdoff teaches knitting to important Chinese—the silkworms. It is true; 'Roger Osborn has a job in an exciting field—one on his farm. Now, Circe Papageorge's motto is 'When in Greece, do as the Grecians do.' Renowned cook Shirley Peel is really in a stew. Joy Perisho is in a reform school; Joy teaches her students etiquette. Leroy Persohn II is trying to live up to his name; he just lives. Too bad, but Sharon Peters had to quit her job at Ruders Ruler Company because she could not keep them straight. Sandy Plew states that a housewife knows what is right—the opposite of left. You knew Ann Propst is the best of the fantasy world? That is true. Mary Lou Ray teaches school. I can hear her now. 'School, please do your spelling.' Another dog house occupant of Dog House, Incorporated, is Valerie Ray. On his last African safari, Don Reed became lost among the other 'reeds,' And Ron Reed is tied up in his new job, that of making ropes. Reverend Dan Reel has volunteered to convert the African cannibals. The now famous Judo instructor, Richard Sanders, has only been thrown twice, and then from his racing rocking horse. Carol Scribner, beautician, was recently appointed to the President's Cabinet. American Farmer Larry See has things growing, growing worse and worse. Don Seeley is presently earning his living by restuffing extra long used Posture Pedic Mattresses. Secretary Barbara Shirar has everything to the point; Barbara works for Sharpey's Pen Company. Do you read the newspapers? Undoubtedly you know that Judy Shively was named Mrs. America by her family and friends. Well-known Al Shontze is in the picture again; that picture won first prize in the Paris Art Contest. Nancy Shumaker has been awarded the title of 'Neatest Housewife' by her mother-in-law. It is rumored that Barbara Simpson has become a skillful homemaker. Barbara works for the Local Lumber Company. Cross-Country runner Jerry Smiley has bettered the saying 'mile a minute.' Isn't he fast? The Nobel Prize in Science was won by Jim Smittkamp for his scientific discovery that work is ' % inspiration and 99% perspiration.' Kay Snearley did organize a club for cattle raisers; the club has bull sessions. Sharlene Snyder wants to be happy in life, but no connection with Nelson Rockefeller. We hear that Marjory Stafford is the owner and manager of a chain of A. and W. Root Beer stands. The title of N.N. instead of R.N. was won by Nurse Marie Staley. She is the Nicest Nurse in town. Machinist Paul Staley likes nuts, the ones that go with bolts. It has been announced that Michele Starbuck has been shipped overseas. She is to act as interpreter for Queen Elizabeth II. No wonder Jim Steidl works with figures; Jim has many problems. Nurse Jonques Stipp is confused. The doctor told her to give a patient an anesthetic, but she could not buy one at the local grocery. Too bad that Tommy Stuck had to give up football, since he grew too large. Brigid Sullivan, teacher and farmer, is instructing Orville Freeman at her night school. You remember that Lana Switzer always said she'd go places? Well, she is an airline hostess. Art Taggart has learned that the best thing to stop is time. A new book has been published—Being Short and Liking It; author, Janet Tosser. Cynthia Trout is the most sophisticated secretary in business. You are reminded that Gaylan Turner is the celebrated Poet Laureate of the Class of 1964. Jim Valerine has his troubles when trying to teach his young arithmetic students that regardless of circumstance 1 +1 =2. Also, Jo Ellen Van Treese teaches her young pupils what is right—and what is left is taken to the Lost and Found department. Bookkeeper Ronald Vaughn won an award for his efforts as The Keeper of the Books; Ron has never liked those bees! Cecil Ceiling, Robert Walls, and Floyd Floor are America's most celebrated builders. Gary Waters coined a new name for his famous hobby—collecting money. We just learned that Bill Watts was Thomas Edison's good man Friday during the invention of the electric light. At the International Tractor Driving Contest this year, John Webster was awarded first prize. John drove himself crazy. Short Mary Webster has made a name for herself by telling tall tales. News flash from API Herbie Whitlock is to represent the Florida Cypress Gardens in the National Water Skiing Contest. John Williams, Olympic star, advertises shaving lotion for the AOK television network. Since he has broken a new record. Pilot Steve Will moth cannot use his record player. Mick Willoughby finally did it! Mick is the first man to ride a motorcycle around the world. A problem faces Nurse Jane Wilson! Jane still cannot decide whether to join a medical hospital staff or the ABC television network. Secretary Jean Wilson cannot understand why her new book Ty’ ie yoyr Wayto Suzzess was a failure. Yes, Sharon Wilson has the Singer Award all sewed up,- she exhibited a beautifully constructed dress. Charlotte Wimsatt is a star; the kind that we see on a clear night. The last occupant of Dog House to be admitted is Phil Winkler. Please close the door. Trina Wolfe has given up acting in order to get ink politics. John Woods is lost, but we have no idea in whicl woods. Still a lover of sports, David Wright plays with i bouncing ball to the music on the Sing Along witl Mitch Show. Patti Wright has the right occupation; Patti teache Physical Education. We hope the reader has enjoyed these newsy bits a much as we have enjoyed collecting them. Sitting, left to right: Eugene Killion, Floyd Miller, Jr., William Patton, Raymond Massey, president. Standing: Robert Gross, Don Cavins, Don Belt, secretary. These are the men who stand beside the clock of TIME and work for and direct progress in education in our schools. These are the men who stand on the side-line and hold the line for advancement in education. Our Board of Education well knows that education is the answer to many perplexing problems that must be faced in today's world. Their motto, If at first we don't succeed, we'll try, try again, reassures us. To our Board of Education we say, Thank you. Margaret Sullivan is secretary to Mr. Stabler and aids in keeping the loose ends tied. Mr. John Stabler is superintendent of the Paris School system—both elementary and high school. By the time all facets of the school system are synchronized, Mr. Stabler has put in much time and effort which bring rewarding results. Catherine Peck aids Mr. Stabler by keeping records of vital importance to the welfare of our schools. 56 Our principal, Mr. John P. Allen, is the one person who sees that all things pertaining to high school life fit into our busy schedule. Ellen E. Johnson, secretary to Mr. Allen, aids in making things click as planned. 57 EZRA KEISHEIMER How they do it, we'll never know! Anyway, these are the men who keep us comfortable, keep our building presentable to visitors, and all necessary facilities functioning properly. A typical scene: It is 4:30 P.M. Mr. Alexander comes into the Arena staff room, takes one look at students working furiously on copy, and quietly says, I'll take care of this room later. He leaves. The next morning the debris is cleared away, and the room is in order. Practice for a bail game or some other event, or a play, and so on may not leave much time to restore things to normal. Yet somehow order is achieved in time for the next round—whatever that may be. To these men in our maintenance department we give our gratitude for their understanding. 58 THROUGH CLASSROOM EDUCATION WE SEEK TO IMPROVE EACH SHINING HOUR 59 AGRICULTURE RICHARD J. Mrs. Newman points the way by which goals may be reached—goals that are set by students who are thinking of the future. If students are to make the most of their abilities and are to become happy, useful citizens, there should be guidance on the road they will be traveling. Joe Sanders assists Mrs. Newman in this highly important work. 62 DRIVERS EDUCATION JOSEPH A. DOGLIO ENGLISH MAUDE D. HOPPER English II Department Supervisor HELEN HIGHTOWER English I CARRIE M.
