Education for freedom means education to help free men to search for the truth, to make intelligent choices, to develop their talents and skills to the maximum. As the boys and girls of the Paris Public Schools study our American Heritage and learn their responsibilities and rights as American Citizens, as free men, may each and every one proudly say, This is my country. America and freedom throughout the world will survive if our youth have deep spiritual insight into the significance of liberty and freedom, respect for a republican form of government, and our free democratic society. This is the greatest challenge for the people of America, for our youth, and for our schools. Raymond I. Massey President 51 Time passes quickly. There is nothing you can do about it except to see that, as far as possible, your time passes wisely. Take time to think — it is a source of vitality. Take time to care for your health — it is the secret of perennial youth. Take time to learn — it is a way to happiness. Take time to read — it is a source of wisdom. Take time to have faith — it is a key to success. John M. One of the greatest honors that can be bestowed upon an ardent student is to be elected to membership in the National Honor Society. The members of this organization are selected for Character, Scholarship, Leadership and Service. In order to qualify for scholarship, a student must acquire a 4.5 or B + scholastic average. During their sophomore year, students are nominated and put on probation for membership. Members of the high school faculty nominate the candidates. Final approval is given by the chapter directors. 70 Honorees at the spring Scholastic Honors banquet Sc io astic Ac iieuemen Aecocjm'zecf Left to right: Superintendent Stabler, and John Allen, principal Under the sponsorship of the Paris High School Student Council backed by the Board of Education, the first annual Honors Day banquet was held in the high school gymnasium in May, 1962. This banquet is designed to correspond to the various athletic banquets which honor outstanding athletes. Eighty-four Paris High School students—from each of the four classes—were honored for placing consistently on the honor roll for the first three quarters of the school year. Students who receive this honor maintain a grade standing of at least halfway between an A and a B. John Stabler, superintendent of the city schools, presided as master of ceremonies and introduced Dr. Quincy Doudna, president of Eastern Illinois University, who was the principal speaker. Dr. Doudna listed two important attributes of an educated person— The development of the quality of integrity and honesty in character, and the high regard for hard work. He stressed that students have a great potential for learning and doing. Following Dr. Doudna's speech. Principal John Allen presented individual scholastic letters to these outstanding students. Mr. Allen recognized the many hours of study and hard work on the part of these students that made this achievement possible. The Student Council plays an important role in student life at Paris High School. The council strives to represent the entire student body. It is made up of one representative from each homeroom. The purpose of the Student Council is to promote the general welfare of the students and allow them a voice in the management of school affairs. Better education is achieved by a closer relationship between the faculty and students of a school, and the Student Council is the link that helps to establish this understanding. During the school year, the members of the council try to promote courtesy, leadership, and scholarship throughout the student body. This student representation sponsors lyceum programs, informal dances, pep meetings, general assemblies, and elections. Many other tasks are performed under the direction of this organization. The 1962 Paris football team was, with all honesty, a surprise to me. Before the season started, I felt we would win over half of our games. After our early season injuries, it appeared that we could end with a losing season. The fact that this team only lost one football game proves that the team members had great courage and spirit that was guided by the will to win. I just hope that I had some small part in molding this spirit, and that the individuals of this year's football team will maintain the courage and the will to win throughout the rest of your lives. 89 COACH GORDON HERRON SENIORS, Kneeling, left to right: Mickey Michels, Jim Savoree, Don Jordan, Mike Touhey, Captain Jim Morris. Concerning members of the team: Captain Jim Morris showed unexpected good leadership. Without Don Jordan we would have lost more than one game. Dave Dickerson was an outstanding pass receiver and punter. Mike Martin is the smallest safety man in the league, but one of the best. Jim Savoree improved the most from last year. In spite of a leg injury, Joe Good—a fine player, filled in for us against Casey, our last opponent. Jerry Brinkerhoff will be remembered best for catching a pass in the end zone—against Charleston to win a game. At the end of the year—with fine running, Denny Moeller—defense his specialty, showed great promise on offense. A junior, John Garver at the end of the season came along very fast. Filling in as a tackle, Ed Henson did yeoman work. When Bruce Curl made his letter this, his freshman year, no other words are needed. BRUCE CURL '66 Wingback STEVE GRIFFIN '63 Center MICKEY MICHELS '63 Tackle Steve Griffin, our center and extra point man, began to mature into a real football player. Our finest lineman, Mickey Mickels, whose efforts are unequaled is a coach's delight. Bob Allred provided a good example at defensive end. A boy who showed what hard work and patience will do was Mike Touhey. Chuck Milam made the first team, much to the surprise of the coach. Until injury sidelined him, Dean Tucker helped the Tigers out of some tight places. Late in the season our blocking guard, Dave Cunningham, showed great defensive ability as a line backer. If the larger boys had played the game as Tommy Stuck did, we would never have been beaten. John Williams is a good prospect for next year. A sophomore quarterback who played first string was John Helfrick. This speaks for John. A Tiger who enjoys contact, Joe Webb, became a good running fullback at the end of the season. David S. Brown showed great natural ability, especially pass defensive. Besides a marching band and a concert band, a new feature is the Stage Band. The Stage Band offers popular dance numbers that make a most enjoyable variety in band music. The concert band presents winter and spring concerts. The marching band peps up the football season and makes various public appearances in community celebrations and the various band music, contests in the area. Majorettes add variety to the colorful band. 7'Joca 71Cusl'c The vocal music department under the direction of Mrs. Patricia McNees engages in a number of musical activities. Many special groups are possible due to much interest in vocal music. The training in vocal music starts in the freshman and sophomore years with the treble clef groups. Variety comes with advanced training. Ensembles, sextets, mixed chorus, boys' chorus, girls' choruses, and madrigal singing are some of the varieties of group work done in advanced classes. Special groups perform for community as well as school activities. Music contest work is an integral part of the activities for vocal music groups. Cook, executive secretary of the International Convention of Christian Churches. Dr. Cook spoke on the timely subject of Shelters or Launching Pads —symbols of this age. The shelter has as its objective survival, but the launching pad is the true symbol of the day with the objective that of conquest for the Man of Tomorrow. The latter aim will be accomplished by people with initiative and imagination, people who think intelligently, and people who work. New nations of the world are launching pads, and the greatest challenge is the human personality. Work, patience, and endurance are the characteristics needed to reach the goals—survival by conquest.
