Latin dead? Look at the grins! Classico cinquoqes LATIN FRENCH The study of basic or classical languages helps to make a cultural as well as a practical contribu- tion to the school curriculum. Foreign languages are taught in order to preserve and maintain cer- tain cultures, to strengthen and improve knowl- edge. The language department here at PHS oifers two years oi' Latin and French. The Latin classes under Mrs. Elizabeth Kern are taught basic forms, rules, constructions, and literal translations. The Latin newspaper, Res Gestae, published every two weeks on current news, is translated by the students. The relation- ship of Latin vocabulary to English is particu- lary emphasized. Parlcs-zfous Frau-zrais? The French classes under Miss Farrell begin by building a hrm foun- dation in grammar. During the two-year course the students try to promote a better understand- ing of the customs and language of the French people, the reading stories, and written composi- tion. The geography of the country, industries, and the celebrations of France are a few of the phases covered. A highlight of this year was a trip to the Christmas Festival held at Charleston, Illinois, where the language students of the Eastern Illi- nois high schools participated in the singing of carols and dramatization of plays. Mr. Wfilliam Beeson spoke to the combined United States history and junior English classes which worked together on the history ociol Sciences WORLD HISTORY UNITED STATES HISTORY SOCIAL PROBLEMS Paris High School offers three years of so- cial science. The first year course consists of the study of world history, the second includes the study of American history, and the third delves into social and civic problems confront- ing American citizens of today. lfVorld history presents the advance of civ- ilization from the Stone Age up to the modern. era. This background helps a student to under- stand and appreciate all peoples of different races and nationalities. American history is a study of our country from the discovery of America to the present day. Courses are held in connection with a pattern of study as laid down by Columbia University and the Uni- versity of Illinois. Two afternoon classes are core curriculum in connection with junior American literature classes. The social problems course attempts to teach people to think instead of being swayed by their emotions and prejudices. In a democracy dependent on the will of the people, it is im- perative that the people are competent to make judicious decisions. The study of city, town- ship, and county governments is stressed since most graduates will settle in the community and should, therefore, be familiar with the governments that affect them the most. Stu- dents are encouraged to think objectively about problems faced by all, such as personality, living in the family group, choosing a career, crime, and public health. Many of these topics are of immediate interest while some concern the futureg some are matters of personal ad- justment while others require group action. lt is hoped that the student will realize the great progress man has made in the past by the use of his intelligence and see the possi- bilities for still greater progress in the future. of Edgar County.
