The English or language arts department of Paris High School is in a state of revision under a state-wide curriculum study conducted through the oEice of the State Superintend- ent of Public Instruction and supervised by the University of Illinois. Before graduation, four years of English are required for the purpose of learning competence in areas of com- munication: reading, writing, speaking, and listening. The freshman student's course em- phasizes skills and general orientation. The sophomore units teach the liner and more dis- criminating techniques of writing along with broader reading. In the junior year the Ameri- can heritage is stressed, while the college preparatory and vocational demands are empha- sized in the senior year. BROADHEAD, B.S., M.A. Principal Paris High School The modern high school curriculum pro- vides a wide range of subjects of instruction giving the student an opportunity to obtain some proficiency in a specific line of work, and at the same time develop the general . knowledge which is essential to success in college and in social and economic life. The Lwork in the classroom is supplemented by many activities which promote social and learning experience for the development of the student. In recent years greater efforts have been made to determine the interests and needs of pupils as a basis for the content of the curriculum. Such interests and needs are usually closely related to problems, activities, and situations in life. Those who have been planning the curriculum of Paris High School have continuously made adjustments to meet the ever-changing needs and interests of its students. Signing fflrenax is an old PHS custom: good English students are necessary to edit the yearbook. Concentration is evident in this glimpse of Miss Hunter's sophomore English class. An elective subject is speech, open to all students desiring to acquire the ability to speak with ease. During the course, attention is given to the direction and production of plays, radio and assembly programs. A new journalism class was added to the language arts department this fall. Through this class the TIGER TALES is being edited and distributed to the student body. This elective is available to all students. Many media are used for English presentation that will widen interests and develop greater skills, appreciation, and a more critical attitude toward language arts.
