As a matter of fact, one out of every four children is affected by alcoholism in one way or another. Pardeeville High School has tak- en steps to deal with this problem. The school district has formulated an alcohol and other drug aware- ness core group, better known as A.O.D.A. This core group is made up of fourteen staff members and eight community volunteers. These peo- ple have undergone over fifty hours of training in order to deal with students who are directly or indirectly involved with alcoholism or chemical dependency. The staff members participating are: Sonya Buzzell, Mark Manne- bach, Ken Youra, Phil Trahms, Larry Flynn, Judy Skaar, Barry Pu- fahl, Rick Maass, Ginny Harmon, June Lenz, Pat Green, Ronna Do- bratz, Nancy Carr, and Paul Ulrich. To pay for this program Pardee- ville High School was given a grant by the Department of Public In- struction in the amount of $22,227. Along with twelve other districts funded in 1985-1986, Par- deeville High School will serve as a model for other schools through- out the state of Wisconsin. MR. They sang Battle Hymn of the Republic and were accompa- nied by Mrs. Sanderson. 7 Highlighting the year was the Winter Concert. Songs sung were Gloria in Excelsis Deo , “Angels We Have Heard on High , Fran- kie and Johnny , I Don't Know How to Love Him , Little Altar Boy and Christmas is a Feeling. The night was brought to life by the singing of The Twelve (Mod- ern) Days of Christmas. In March fifteen members of the chorus attended Solo-Ensemble which was hosted by Fall River. The farmers and ranchers had a hard time getting along in Oklaho- ma Territory. In the middle of all the hassles, a peddler, Todd Hepler, came to town and was be- ing forced to marry Ado Annie be- cause her father thought she shouldn't marry Will Parker, a ro- deo star. Later Will thought he tricked the peddler out of $50 which he need- ed to marry Ado Annie. During the box social, Curly, played by Mike Pufahl, beat Jud Fry, a sinister farmhand, out of Laurey's food hamper. Laurey and Curly were then married. The scenery, under the supervi- sion and direction of Mr. Taylor, included an old farm house sur- rounded by a white picket fence and a corn field. The musical showed the unified efforts of the cast, crew, musi- cians, and directors. The success of OKLAHOMA was due to the hard work and cooperation of the students and staff. Students in good standing could apply to a teacher who advertised a need for a student aide. After choosing one of the applicants, the teacher and the student drew up a contract which specified what was expected. In addition to the student and teacher, the parents and Principal Dan Harmon had to sign the agreement. The student aide received ' 2 credit per semester for his her work. One credit earned in this program could be put toward the 24 credits needed for graduation. Assistant Principal, Mark Man- nebach, the programs director, stated that the program was quite successful. Senior Varsity Club members re- ceive plaques at the end of the year with the sports and years in which they received a varsity let- ter. The largest fundraiser was the pizza sale. Members sold, made, and delivered the pizzas. Conces- sion stands were also used to raise money. The funds from these ac- tivities were used to buy unbudget- ed athletic equipment and the Sen- ior plaques. Pierce's Supermarket honored the turkey stamps earned from the purchase of pizza ingredients. Var- sity Club traded the turkey stamps for ham which was used in the Christmas baskets donated to area families. To complete the gift baskets Home Ec. Club baked cookies, and Student Council don- ated money for the purchase of extra gifts. In all, ten baskets were prepared and delivered to local families. The officers who coordinated these efforts were: President — Rick Skaar, Vice Presi- dent — Kevin Bostad, Secretary — Monica Manthey and Treasur- er — Patti Van Swol. To raise money for upcoming expenses the council sponsored dances after games. They also sponsored the Dual County Con- ference dance, which was D.J.'d by Jonathan Little of Z-104 and the Homecoming dance D.J.'d by Jeff Tyler also of Z-104. Proceeds from the pop machine and Bulldog t-shirt sale, also helped raise the necessary funds. The council used the funds it raised to buy new speakers and an amplifier to add and renew the ste- reo equipment used at dances, a weight lifting belt for lifting free weights and renovated the court- yard outside the cafeteria. To cre- ate the courtyard, the dumpster was removed and replaced with a picket fence, picnic table, and landscaping. The council donated money to the newly created Par- deeville Student Assistance Pro- gram, and helped the Varsity Club put together Christmas baskets to give the needy in the Pardeeville area. On Veterans' Day the council presented a program for both stu- dents and community. President Rick Skaar moderated the assem- bly and members of the council acted as color guard to honor vet- erans and mothers of servicemen and women. The first trip was to watch JOSE MOLINAS BAILES ESPANOLES. The students were shown the Fle- menko, a traditional southern Spanish gypsy dance along with several other regional dances. Castenets and palmeadas; hand clapping rhythms, were also dem- onstrated. During the spring field trip mem- bers saw BALLET FOLKLORICO MEXICANO by Jorge Tyller. This performance allowed the students to discover ancient Indian dances which emphasize the flute and drum. Deer Dance , the most popular, demonstrated the hunt and kill of the deer by ancient peo- ple. After both performances the club went to the Crossroads res- taurant in Cambria for a Mexican buffet. Seven students and three adults are making plans to visit Spain. Mike Belton, Tara Sullivan, Terri Storandt, Tony Ziehmke, Travis Patchin, Shad Thurston and Corby Neef along with Mrs. Judy Harri- son, Mrs. Mitzi Manthey and Mrs. Kathy Casey will visit Madrid in June. For a week these students will tour Toledo, Sevilla, Cordova and Granada to see the many fam- ous places of Spain. Students may choose to stay in Spain for an additional week. They will live with a Spanish family to learn more about the culture of Spain. To offset the rising cost of the printing the staff hit the streets in force to sell ads and also worked at over 15 con- cession stands. The co-editors, Ruth Farrey and Patti Fischer, and the business manager, Todd Hepler, showed a large amount of perseverance and dedication. The year was full of learning and training which includ- ed a day long session at UW-Eau Claire where various aspects of producing a yearbook were stressed. The advisors Miss Wal- dinger and Miss Winters also at- tended the session. One of the major accomplish- ments was the development of a theme. After hours of brainstorm- ing and discussion Whisper — Real to Reel was created to tie together all of the different areas of Pardeeville High School into one common idea. After the girls finished third at the Rio Invitational they gained confi- dence and ran very well, com- mented Coach Babcock when asked to summarize the highlights of the season. The boys showed their effort when they placed fourth at both the Conference and Regionals. The girls finished sec- ond in Conference and Regionals, fifth in Sectionals and advanced one runner, Patti Van Swol, to the State Meet. The State Meet was scheduled for November 2, but was post- poned because of heavy rain only to be held one week later in six inches of snow. Patti ran well plac- ing 21st. Patti admitted that she was nervous but happy when she first realized that she was going to State. When asked how she felt about the team Patti responded, I was really glad to be on the girls' team because they really tried hard. The teams had a total of ten first year runners. All of the runners im- proved an average of two minutes over the course of the season. Team Captains were: Mark Duf- fert and Dan Jerred for the boys and Patti Van Swol and Barb Gas- sen for the girls. Most Valuable players were Mark Duffert and Patti Van Swol. When asked to summarize the season Coach Babcock replied, Both teams were young and lacked experience but were enthu- siastic and have a bright future. 46 Cross Country 1. The senior dominated team of ten veterans looked prom- ising, but due to early season ineli- gibilities, the squad was forced to rely on some young players who had never seen varsity action. De- spite their inexperience, the rook- ies did a fine job. Another detriment that faced the Bulldogs was the weather; if it wasn't freezing cold, it rained. Five out of nine games were played in the rain which slowed down the ex- plosive passing game. Pardeeville fans were not disap- pointed as there were many high- lights during the season. One high- light took place when Princeton came to town sporting a 6-2 re- cord. Bulldog pride shone as they upset the Tigers 14-6. This victory plus a win at Montello enabled Coach Maass to record his second winning season with a mark of 5-4. At the Athletic Banquet Rick Skaar was awarded MVP honors. Jason Cook was named Outstand- ing Lineman, while Kevin Bostad took Team Captain honors. Rod- ney Shields received the Outstand- ing JV Player Award. All Confer- ence honors were also cited as Rick Skaar and Kevin Bostad were named to the Defensive Team. Ja- son Cook and Shawn Premo were Honorable Mention Offense. Coach Maass was given a plaque from the class of '86 which read, For your four years of dedication to the Class of 1986. The plaque also quoted Coach Maass' motto, Nothing great has ever been ac- complished without enthusiasm. 2 I. Mark Bubolz leaves the field after the Bulldogs defeated Fall River 2. In what Coach McGraw called, “An out- standing season, the squad tied with Rio for first place with an 8-1 conference record and 10-2 over- all record. The team also played well in two tournaments; placing second at both Wayland Academy and Johnson Creek. The Bulldogs won the Regional Tournament and advanced to Sectional play by defeating Cam- bria, Almond, and Wild Rose. The only Dual County team in the Sec- tional tournament, the Bulldogs played well, but had a disappoint- ing day, coming away winless, de- spite some close matches. The squad consisted of six re- turning letter winners: Patti Fi- scher, Julie Grueneberg, Deb Lew- is, Julie Ott, Caroline Osborn, and Kathy Stieber. The team's first year letter winners were: Shelley Ades, Stephanie Denzer, Monika Greenheck, Jamie Ott, Tara Sulli- van, and Patti Van Swol. Because the team felt team- work and senior leadership were their strongest points, an MVP award was not given. Patti Fischer, Caroline Osborn, and Julie Ott were voted Tri-Captains by their teammates, while Deb Lewis was the Most Improved and Patti Van Swol received the Hustle Award. I thought we were much better than our re- cord showed, quipped the coach. Picked to be at the bottom of the D.C.C., the cagers ended up in a surprising tie for second with a 10- 6 Conference record. The season had many highlights including a thrilling victory over Cambria on a buzzer beating shot by Senior Rick Skaar. Another Sen- ior, Kevin Bostad dazzled a senior night crowd by scoring 45 points against Montello. Kevin finished with a career total of 1,024 points. Oran Nehls also a senior had a fine year after not playing his junior year. With a lot of bench support the Bulldogs ended the season with a record of 11 -9. The Bulldogs went into the Sub- Regional game against Cambria with hopes of going to West Bend but were denied losing to the Hill- toppers 58-56 in overtime. Awards were presented at the Athletic Banquet. Kevin Bostad was named the team's Most Valu- able Player and received the Best Free Throw Award. Girls Head to Medford Curling is often a sport that is overlooked but despite the lack of recognition, both the boy and girl curlers had a good season. During the Lodi Open Bonspiel, the team comprised of M. Mac- Donald, M. Pufahl, L. Hamilton and C. Dunahee won two of three games, beating Portage by two points and Poynette by five points. The mixed team of G. Harrison, S. Hill, R. Shields, K. Sanderson (alt.) and S. Lee didn't fair as well and lost two of three games. Their first match was a gripping close con- test as they tied Lodi four-four, only to be beaten in a sudden death throw off. At the Wausau Bonspiel the boys beat Medford 15-11, and Lodi 8-6 while losing to Portage 9- 5. The girls lost two of three games with the scores being: Tri-City 11- 5, Wausau West 9-4, Poynette 8-6. Poynette hosted the boys Sec- tional Tournament and defeated our curlers 8-2. They advanced to the State meet. The girl curlers met at Pardeeville and defeated Poyn- ette 9-7 and 9-4 while losing to Lodi 13-6 and to Portage 11 -5. De- spite their two losses this record was good enough to take second place and advance them to the state meet in Medford. 'Brady Bunch' Tops Rally The cheerleaders began the rain soaked fall season with a button project. Two buttons with each football player's picture were made and presented to their par- ents. Rain dampened half of the games making cheering nearly im- possible. New sweaters added a cosmetic dimension to the season. The Brady Bunch skit at the Homecoming pep rally highlighted the fall season. All cheerleaders played various characters from the television series and adapted the story line to the Pardeeville vs Cambria game. At the Fall Athletic Banquet Ruth Farrey received the Honorary Captain Award and Sue Mikle was 70 Cheerleading named Best Cheerleader. Separate tryouts for wrestling and basketball cheerleading were held in November. Chris Bartels, Ruth Farrey, and Jenni Manthey were the only Cheerleaders with previous experience. Because of a change in the athletic guidelines, cheerleaders were allowed for the first time to also be Pom Pon Girls. At the Christmas assembly the cheerleading and Pom Pon Squads teamed up and presented their version of Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer and the “Twelve Days of Christmas adapting the words to people and events at Par- deeville High School. The squad, coached by Ms. Wal- dinger, was inexperienced with eight of the 17 girls being first year members. Everyone was in a group to choreograph a routine. Rou- tines were done to the Pep Band songs: Cotton Eyed Joe, NFL Theme, Championship, Scar- borough Fair, It's So Easy, Apache, and Great Balls of Fire. Monica Manthey choreo- graphed a routine to the popular hit RO C K. In The U.S.A. by John Cougar Mellencamp. Besides basketball games, the squad performed at Homecoming to the song Old Man River. Christmas found the girls singing The Twelve Days of Christmas and Rudolph the Red Nosed Rein- deer with the words changed to include various teachers and stu- dents. Monica Manthey and Kathy Stieber were chosen as Co-Cap- tains by the squad early in the sea- son. At the end of the season Monica Manthey, the only senior, received the Most Dedicated award. Tornado warnings and heavy rain dampened the area, but this did not stop the 185 guests from attending the Prom at the Portage Country Club. City Nights chosen by the class as their theme was brought to life by city skyline murals, silver foil and shimmer curtains. The guys on the court completed the scene by wearing black tuxedos, red cummerbunds and bow ties. The theme song, chosen by the class was “Heaven by Bryan Ad- ams. A new dimension was added by having a Disc Jockey, Jonathan Scott, instead of a band. Highlighting the evening was the introduction of the 1985 King and Queen, Rick Skaar and Monica Manthey, by Jamie George and Gena Smith, Master and Mistress of Ceremonies. Completing the court were: Jason Cook escorting Julie Ott, Kevin Bostad escorting Traci Becker, Mark Bubolz escort- ing Patti Fischer, Doug Beahm es- corting Amy Stilson. Party goers spent the night shooting pool, playing video games, spinning foosball, and weaving turtles around and un- derneath tables. Even the chaper- ones: Mr. Harmon, Miss Winters, Miss Waldinger, Mr. and Mrs. Frankiewicz got into the spirit and gave the turtles a try. The heated pool attracted the swimming en- thusiasts. Guests enjoyed pizza, ice cream, chips, and soda until the breakfast hour. Breakfast at 4:00 A M. cli- maxed the party for those who managed to stay awake. Break- fast chefs Mr. and Mrs. Neef and the other chaperones pushed toast, fried eggs and sausage, mixed orange juice, and poured milk and coffee for the sleepy but hungry guests. Following break- fast the post prom party ended. Post Prom 81 Homecoming week included dress-up days, noon hour games, Bulldog games on Thursday night, and finally a pep rally before the game against the Cambria Hilltop- pers. Dress-up days consisted of paja- ma day, toga day, nerd day, Ha- waiian day, and the traditional blue and gold day. Thursday night included the usu- al gym games such as the basket- ball hop and plunger run along with class games such as the whipped cream race, tennis shoe hunt, and turtle race. The week ended with a pep rally of skits, a belching contest and a 82 Homecoming demonstration of the new stereo equipment used for Student Coun- cil dances. Each class wrote and performed an original skit about how the Bull- dogs would beat the Toppers. The Senior skit entitled Mr. Rogers' Football won the competition. Ja- mie George stole the show as Mr. Rogers. Other skits were a repre- sentation of all sports, Press Your Duck and a scene in the Cambria locker room at halftime. When all the results were tabu- lated the class of 1986 won the Spirit Plaque for the second straight year. Dorryl Wilson winds up for the swing 4 Matt Woxland poses on the green 2 3 Team Peaks at New Lisbon The golf team showed an overall improvement over last year. Dur- ing the season individual scores im- proved each week. Important to the improvement was the great team attitude. The Most Valuable Player was Kurt Sanderson who had the team's low score of 46 against Princeton. The team voted Matt Woxland Team Captain. In the match with New Lisbon the golf team had their lowest combined total of 221 for nine holes. At the conference meet the team had an 18 hole total of 467, good for a sixth place finish. In Re- gional competition they had a 487 score for 18 holes. The team was young and loaded with potential. Squad members were: Kurt Sanderson, Matt Wox- land, Jody Staveness, Jenni Manthey, Monica Manthey, and Shad Thurston. Golf 109 BASEBALL Bulldogs Upset Randolph Four Seniors: Doug Beahm, Ke- vin Bostad, Mark Bubolz, and Rick Skaar led the 1986 Baseball Squad. The leading batter was Ke- vin Bostad with an average of 453. The best on base percentage be- longed to Chris Vike with .601. Ke- vin Bostad and Rick Skaar were named Co-MVPs and were select- ed All-Conference and All-Confer- ence Honorable Mention respec- tively. The team posted a six wins ten losses season record. Losing four one point games was the season's big disappointment. Defeating the number two ranked team in the state, Ran- dolph, 9-2 in Sub-Regional action was the highlight of the season. This represented the first time an experimental theater type of play was presented at P.H.S. The props on stage were designed to appeal to the viewer's imagina- tion and the language was in infor- mal modern English. Noah described what might have happened aboard the fam- ous Ark on its voyage to Ararat. Dissention and skepticism devel- oped as those on board began having misgivings about their jour- ney. As the rains ended, doves were sent to bring back evidence of land. The voyage ended with all those aboard going their separate way. “NOAH CAST Noah ............... Todd Hepler Mrs Noah ...... To open the ceremony, Salutato- rian Brad Patchin reflected on the many accomplishments of fhe class of 1986 and foreshadowed the fu- ture, saying the class has many more accomplishments yet to come. Valedictorian, Ruth Farrey, chose to enhance the class motto, The future belongs to those who dare, by telling the graduates they must dare if they want to succeed. While the graduates were assem- bled together one last time on the chorus raisers; for a class picture, Miss Dobratz entertained the guests by singing Whitney Hous- ton's popular hit song, The Great- est Love of All. In conclusion, graduation was a sad time and yet a joyful time. Many of the class came close to crying during the ceremony, yet it wasn't until after the class collected their diplomas and said a final farewell that their emotions were at last un- leashed.
