The theme song for the dance was Take a Look at Me Now sung by Phil Collins. Another first was a Post-Prom party held at Indian Trails Campground. The pool and recreation room were open to all Prom-goers. The dance and Post-Prom both made for a memorable evening. The Junior class greatly appreciated the use of Celebrations and Indian Trails Campground. 6. Trina Miles and Mike Griepentrog 7. Kory Ehlert and Cami Brown 8. Master and Mistress of Ceremonies. The half-time program featured the introduction of the court, the crown- ing of King Bobby Bostad and Queen Traci Becker, as well as the marching band and the Pom Pon squad. Following the game, the Homecoming Dance was held in the Junior High Gym. The dance centered around the Grand March with the theme song Hard Habit to Break. The Juniors won on the strength of wins at the noon hour games and the Bulldog games. Meanwhile, the Seniors dominated the dress-up counts. Dress-up days included hat, sunglasses, and t-shirt day, nerd day, and hippie day as well as the traditional dress up and blue and gold days. Thursday brought the Bulldog games and with it the tennis shoe hunt and egg toss. Following the contests was a bonfire and spirited snake dance through town. Going into Friday's pep rally, the com- petition was close. Highlights were the air guitar contest and skits. The Junior skit Johnny Carson” clinched the week's title for their class. 12 7. The main character, Fogg, bets with several friends that he can go around the world in eighty days. Along the way he is trailed by an inspector from Scotland Yard and an Indian Princess, Aouda, whom he eventually marries. Fogg makes the trip with not so much as a second to spare and proves punctuality is one of the greatest attributes a person can have. The efforts of the cast, director and stage crew made Around the World in Eighty Days a tremendous success. Director Jim Rusch felt that Senior leadership was the key to the group's success. Rusch also felt that the boys, though few in numbers, carried their parts so well that the chorus had a nicely balanced sound. Performances on Veteran s Day at the Christmas Concert were the highlights of the year. Sleigh Ride was perhaps the most popular number sung at the Christ- mas Concert. Marcy Dawson received special recog- nition as the only chorus member to have participated all four years in the Solo-En- semble Contest. A trip to Madison to see a filmed ver- sion of the opera Carmen a tour of the WHA-TV Channel 21 studios also helped to make the year a memorable one. Backbone 2 5 1. Mr. Rusch 2. Student Librar- ians are seen doing various jobs in the library. Some of their duties include shelv- ing books and magazines and placing the daily newspapers out. Sometimes imformation is hard to find in books because of it's timeliness. An imformation file, as it is called, is a great resource in our library. Student Librarians are also seen cutting out articles from newspapers for this file. The Library Club aslo sponsored the sixth annual Question of the Day Contest. This contest is open to all students. Each day contestants must answer a question by searching for the answer in the library. If they answer a question incorrectly they are eliminated and the winner of the contest is the person that answers all questions cor- rectly. Librarians 55 FUTURE FARMERS OF AMERICA Be A Winner in FFA! This year marked the 13th annual Hay and Grain Show in which FFA members could show their ability in either growing produce, or, with a farmer's permission, collect samples from his field. Awards were given to O. Nehls for Champion Crop Judger. R. Manthey re- ceived an award for Corn King and one for having the most entries. B. Abrath won the Best Fruit and Vegetable cate- gory and for Champion Showman. Awards also were given to one person from each class for having scored the most points during the show; the winners as follows; Frosh., B. Paul; Soph., P. Jer- ome; Jr., D. Curtis; Sr., T. Becker. The FFA officers for the 1984-85 school year were B. Abrath, Pres.; R. Kuhl, V.-Pres.; C. Cole, Sec'y; O. Nehls, Reporter; and D. Curtis. Sentinel. Fruit was again sold by members and the proceeds were well spent on commu- nity projects. These industrious future farmers were seen assisting the elderly by raking leaves and a second project was painting 55 gallon drums. These barrels were filled with sand and placed at inter- sections in town. The sand will be used to make the intersections less slippery during the winter. February 11-18 was FFA Week and club members entertained students during noon hour by hosting an ice-cream social and an arm wrestling contest. The Future Farmers of America is an active, fun organization to belong to and students are invited to become a part of it. 56 FFA Front: Dave Hare, Christine Cole. This organization has worked hard to make your school year a memorable one. Homecoming would not have been the great time that it was without the Student Council's hard work. The coordinated en- deavors made the various dress up days and games a success. A bon fire also ap- peared in the festivities this year. It was the highlight of Homecoming along with a snake dance which followed. Halloween would not have been as much fun either without the council’s ef- forts. They sponsored the 2nd annual cos- tume contest which brought out many gouls and goblins. The best dressed prizes were awarded to Mrs. Neef, as a witch; L. Swenson, S. Grimm and T. Steinich as The Three Blind Mice; T. Thompson, as an enlisted man; G. Smith as a frog; J. George, as a girl; and L. Larson, as a Smur- fette. The Best Dressed Couple prize went to E. Swenson and B. Ullrich for parading as vampires, and the prize for the Best Overall went to S. Swehla and J. Pufahl as Raggedy Ann and Raggedy Andy. The council also planned to award as the first place prize for the best Jack O'Lantern carved, free milk and donuts for a week, but because of student apathy no one en- tered the contest. Student Council gets involved with se- rious matters as well as the fun and games activities. Parent Teacher Conferences found members serving parents refresh- ments. Council members were a compassion- ate group this year and some of their hard earned money was given to an Ethiopian relief fund. Several changes were made in the pro- gram such as a new point system and the addition of several new categories. New categories this year were: Farrago, Solo Acting, and Group Discussion. P.H.S. stu- dents participated in all of the categories and adjusted well to the changes. Participants who received outstanding ratings advanced to Sub-District competi- tion in Poynette. The newspaper staff this year was rela- tively small, but what they lacked in num- bers they more than made up for in ambi- tion. There were ten reporters on the staff, and eight of them were seniors. Mrs. June Lenz has been a tremendous asset to the school district as the untiring advisor for the newspaper for the last thir- ty-seven years. She has put in countless hours of extra effort as have the co-edi- tors; Bonnie Ullrich, Ellen Swenson and Todd Hepler. Without these people and their superb dedication Pardeeville High School would not be able to have a school newspaper. 4 1. Editors: Ellen Swenson. Bonnie Ullrich, Todd Back: Todd Hepler. Beth Hecht. These extra pages allowed staff members to be able to cover school events more thoroughly. This year, for the first time, the Whisper staff had a business manager. Filling this position was Debbie Smith. Debbie as- sumed all of the financial responsibilities involving the sale of advertisements. Her job was done behind the scenes and with- out her work and dedication, the produc- tion of the yearbook would not have pro- gressed as smoothly. The editors this year were Cami Brown and Ellen Farrey. Cami and Ellen spent many hours dealing with aspects of year- book design such as: picture layout, article writing, lettering, typing and assisting oth- er staff members. Though the business manager and edi- tors play an important role in producing a yearbook; the job couldn't be completed without staff suppon. Each staff member completed an interest application and those who wished to design pages were required to attend several training ses- sions. These staff members were Patti Bahls.Janel Bahr, Lucas Bernau, Ruth Far- rey. Patti Fischer, Beth Hecht, Todd Hepler, Kelly Maginnis, Monica Manthey, Julie Ott and Candace Saviano. Other members of the staff helped raise production money by working concession stands, selling ads and participating in the candy sale fund raiser. The staffs fund raising activities helped to lower the cost of your yearbook, which otherwise would have been more expensive. Many staff members also spent noon hours taking orders for the 1985 Whisper. Participation on the yearbook staff is open to all P.H.S. students. This is a re- warding experience which requires much dedication and team effort. The yearbook advisors. Miss Waldinger and Miss Win- ters, look forward to working with an- other fine staff in the 1S 85-1986 school year. ! Business Mgr, D. Smith; Editors. E. Farrey. C. Brown 2. Monica Manthey 3. The pep band accompanied the squad with the songs: Apache , Bub- bles was a Cheerleader , New York, New York , and Puttin' on the Ritz'. The rou- tine to Puttin' on the Ritz found the squad decked out in top hats, canes, vests, and mustaches. Another novelty routine was performed to the music Nuttin' for Christmas , to which the girls dressed in pajamas and carried dolls or stuffed toys. On Parent's Night the crowd was treated to a special routine done to the songs Let's Go Crazy , and Naughty Naughty”. Individually Patti placed first in Conference and teammate Barb finished eighth. At the Regional Meet the boys were lack- ing one team member; thus, were unable to record a team score. The girls ran well at Regionals and finished in fourth place; miss- ing the team Sectional qualifying place by one. Patti Van Swol placed third at the Re- gional Meet thus qualifying her for Section- als. At the Sectional Meet Patti ran an as- tounding race finishing fifth and advancing her to the State Meet at Wisconsin Dells. The highlight of the season was when Coach Babcock shaved off his moustache during a pep rally due to a bet he made with Patti concerning her State qualification. Despite the rainy windy day, Patti ran well at the State Meet finishing I8th in a field of 56 runners. At the Athletic Banquet at the conclusion of the season, Mark Duffert was named M.V.P. while Dan Jerred was named Team Captain. Co-Captains for the girls were Marcy Dawson and Patti Van Swol. First year coach, Rick Maass assisted by defensive coordinator Bob Bostad, led the Bulldogs to a 5-4 conference record. One highlight of the season was the 14- 6 triple overtime victory against the Prin- ceton Tigers. Team Captain Bobby Bos- tad and M.V.P. Steve Swanson plus the other seniors displayed strong leadership throughout the season. Four P.H.S. team members were named Honorable Mention to the D.C.C. All- Conference Team. Bobby Bostad, Kevin Bostad, and Shawn Premo were named to the Offensive Team while Bobby Bostad and Rick Skaar were named to the Defen- sive Team. Other special honors awarded by the coaches went to Steve Swanson for being the team's leading tackier and scor- er and to Rick Skaar for leading the team in the number of interceptions. 4 76 Football 7 1. The squads were selected in May of 1984. The football cheerleaders were Kel- ly Ernst, Sue Sterland, Sue Eggleston, Janel Bahr, Jenni Manthey, Chris Bartels, Laura Rose, Becky Hollander. Sue Mikle and Karla Zanca. These girls presented many skits and sold Bulldog painters caps as a fund raiser. Sue Sterland and Sue Eggleston were presented with a special award at the Fall Sports Award Banquet for being four year members. Elected also in May were the basketball and wrestling cheerleaders. The wrestling cheerleaders were: Ruth Farrey, Ellen Far- rey. Beth Hecht and Janel Bahr. Cheer- leaders rooting for the boys' bucket team were: Sue Hanson. Sue Eggleston, Marcy Dawson, Laura Rose. Chris Bartels and Jenni Manthey. All squads presented many original skits which were written and produced by the girls. Skits presented were: Karen's Cafe. Rio. WI, The Hee Haw Show,'' and a take off of the gameshow Family Feud. For the first time both squads joined to perform at pep rallies and worked togeth- er as a unit to raise school spirit. Along with their usual responsibilities they decorated the bulletin board in the cafeteria every week to support the var- ious teams. The bulletin boards were very colorful, improved the atmosphere in the cafeteria and brought out a positive feel- ing of spirit. The cheerleaders also constructed hoops for teams to run through and post- ers and locker decorations. 1. Janel Bahr. Jenni Manthey 2. Kelly Ernst. Karla Zanca 3. Becky Hollander. Mrs. Hollander. Kory Ehlert, Russ Kuhl, and Karl Stebbins were the only senior team members. Although the team's dual meet record was only 3-3-0 in Conference action and 4-7-0 overall, their performance in invitationals and tournaments was outstanding. The Bulldogs captured second place at the Dodgeland Invitational with 131 points just one halt point behind first place Poyncttc. Champions at Dodgeland were Kory Ehlert (112), Doug Jarchow (155), and Rick Lappen (UNU. Tim Helper (167) and Karl Stebbins (145) placed sec- ond while Chris Vike (119) took third place. Pardeeville next hosted its own invitational at which the team placed fourth. Individual cham- pions were Doug Jarchow (155) and Rick Lappen (UNL). Bulldogs placing second were Kory Ehlert (112) and Chris Vike (119). Conference found the Bulldogs in fourth place with three conference champions: Kory Ehlert (112), Chris Vike (119), and Rick Lappen (UNL). Second places went to Doug Jarchow (167) and Karl Stebbins (155). Tim Duffcrt (145) placed third. Kory Ehlert became the first Bulldog w-restlcr to win conference three years in a row. Chris Vike was Pardecville s first freshman con- ference champion. Regional competition yielded tour champions: Kory Ehlert (112), Chris Vike (119), Doug Jarchow (167), and Rick Lappen (UNL). Karl Stebbins (155) earned the right to advance to sectionals by placing second. Tim Duffert (145) won a hard-fought third place and also advanced because the first place winner was eliminated from competition. Although Pardeeville had no sectional cham- pions, all of the Bulldogs wrestled tough. At Sectionals Kory Ehlert (112). Karl Stebbins (155). and Rick Lappen (UNL) all placed third while Doug Jarchow (167) took fourth place. The Bull- dogs outscorcd all other conference teams at Sec- tionals. TT e 1984-1985 season was one of hard work and big improvement. Co-Captains Kory Ehlert and Karl Stebbins led the team. At the end of the season Kory Ehlert was named MVP and Chris Vike was voted the most improved wrestler. 84 Wrestling Kneeling: Tyler Thompson. The words 'almost'' and could have been'' described the season as eleven of twenty games were decided by four points or less, with four of these being by only one point. One game with Randolph was lost at the buzzer. Two games were single overtime contests and one was a double overtime game. Kevin Bostad led the cagers w ith 372 points, averaging 18.6 points per game. Two fire spelling seniors, Jim Burmester and Dave Hebl, scored 306 and 101 points respectively. The Bulldogs amassed a record of 8 and 8 which Coach Soderman believes will be duplicated if not improved upon next season. Randolph was the setting of the Sub- Regional game. Even though the Bull- dogs were defeated 64-55, the Bulldog spectators out numbered the Rockets and managed to dominate the game in terms of morale. Two Bulldogs, JLn Burmester and Kevin Bostad were selected first team All-Conference by the DCC coaches. Varsity — Kneeling: John Rivest, Rick Skaar, Dave Hebl. Kent Leonard, Bob Bostad. The varsity team was sophomore domi- nated. Coach Mannebach had a few com- ments about his starting five. Mikki Hebl and Caroline Osborn were labeled as steady.'’ Sheila Simonson was the team leader ' and top scorer while Patti VanS- wol was called a quick thinker and excel- lent playmaker. The last of the starters. Lori Griepentrog, ultimately showed the most improvement throughout the sea- son. The girls will lose only two players due to graduation; thus, the outlook for next year could be that the Bulldogs are definite contenders for Conference hon- ors. In tournament play, the girls were smit- ed by the conference champs, Randolph, in the first Sub-Regional game. By main- taining an awesome defense, The Bull- dogs kept the score down to 39-31. Caro- line Osborn led the scoring with 12 points and nine rebounds, while Sheila Simonson added eight points. Sheila Simonson and Patti VanSwol were unanimous All-Conference selec- tions. The pur- pose of the organization is to raise funds for senior athletic plaques and other benefits and services for athletes and the Athletic Department. A new whirlpool for both male and female athletes was the club's goal in 1985. An all-you-can-eat chili supper fol- lowed by a donkey basketball game was the club's main activity. Four teams: the Pardeeville Businessmen, the Fire Department, the Faculty, and the Senior Letterman, participated. Steve Swanson was named the even- ing's Most Valuable Player as the Sen- ior Letterman defeated the Faculty in the evening's final contest. An evening of laughs, bumps, and bruises was en- joyed by all. 5 112 Lettermcn FFA Pig Roast Successful A pig roast was the main event for the Spring FFA banquet.
