May they strive to equal or even excell us in our scholastic accomplishments. It is our desire that they continue and reach this temp- orary goal — graduation from high school. When we say temporary goal, we mean just that — for we feel that we are not at the' top, but still climbing. Class of '79 MEMORIALS Early in the school year, Dolores Sommers, a retired Pardeeville elementary teacher, passed away. She was an outstanding teach- er and also was a musician who gave music lessons to many Pardeeville citizens. Mrs. Sommers was very active in church and school organizations. Later in the year, the community was shock- ed again when they heard of the death of Merwyn Smith. Mr. Smith, a Pardeeville busi- nessman, was a staunch supporter of all school, church, and community activities. He was business manager of the '49 Whisper and largely through his efforts the '49 annual was the first cloth bound yearbook in the history of Pardeeville High School; later when he be- came a businessman, he continued to support the Whisper by becoming an advertiser. These two individuals have made an im- pact upon the lives of many students and have helped to make Pardeeville a better place ir. which to live. A void has been left in the com- munity which will not soon be filled. 3 Osn uLoJ J}u judd u .................5 0 H O a ruyyi )............................Ih V tijj f'ito............................... 0 C 7? jJdrYO ndsn . . ..............3 f 36 .....................(j ! The runner-up was fresh- man Jim Landsverk; Jim also was top freshman in exhibiting. Mark Barden won five championship rib- bons and two trophies. No one has ever won more than three at one show; he also added to the ribbons and trophies, the top Crop Judging honors and set a new record by placing three classes correctly and missing only one. For the first time trophies were presented to the top exhibitor in each school grade, they were: Jim Landsverk for the Freshman; Mark Barden, Sophomore; Mike Malisch, Juniors; and for the Seniors it was Steve McElroy. Grand champion ribbons in the show were as follows: Hay, Mark Landsverk, Steve Mc- Elroy; Top Corn Yield, Tom Heaps; Apples, Doug DiBell; Ear Corn, Mark Barden; Shelled Corn, Mark Barden, Ed Baumgartner; Oats, Mark Barden; Potatoes, Jon Kreger; Vegeta- bles, Jim Landsverk. Tim Hamilton and Ed Baumgartner attended the National FFA Convention held at Kansas City, Missouri, November 7-11. They attended a lot of meetings and did some sight-seeing. Ed also had the privilege of shaking the Presi- dent's hand during one of the meetings. The National FFA band and chorus, Sun- shine Express, Comedian Jerry Clower and singer Debby Boone provided the entertain- ment. FF A. OFFICERS—Seated: S. McElroy, V. Pres.; T. Fischer, Pres., S. An assembly was held during the day for the students at which the plays were per- formed; also, an evening performance was given at the Wyocena Little Theatre. The plays which participated in the competi- tion included: The Dancer, which was a humorous saga of teenage life; Two Crooks and a Lady, which was a story of an elderly invalid who cunningly tricks two crooks out of stealing her jewels; and Red Carnations, where a boy, a girl, and a man engage in a very amusing trialogue near a park bench. The directors for the plays were Mrs. Nancy Carr and Mrs. Evelyn Goke. Red Carnations received first place at the local competition, and advanced to Conference competition at Poynette. They also advanced to further competition at Waunakee where they received a B rating for their efforts. 23 ANNIE GET YOUR GUN (1978 Spring Musical)—Bottom Row: P. Pulver. B. Baldowin. S. Balzer, T. They started the year by marching at all home football games; they were a pleasing aspect to halftime entertainment. Then they had the honor to go to Stevens Point Home- coming October 14, to march and support Mr. Bostad when he was installed into the Stevens Point Football Hall of Fame. Several members of the band participated in the All-Conference Band, held at Cambria on November 4. They did an excellent job. The Winter Concert was held December 12. Everyone there enjoyed the performance as the band and some chorus members put on their hats and scarfs and were able to get the audience to join them in singing Christmas carols. Many of the band members participated in the Solo-Ensemble Contests which were held March 3 at Westfield. The Spring Concert Festival was held May 12 at Poynette, and the Spring Concert was in May. They held a Pop Concert at the end of April. Once again some of the band members (as well as Chorus) took another trip to Chicago; they saw the Broadway play “The King and L A trip was scheduled for the band to go to “Great America'' in Gurnee, Illinois; to spend the day marching and performing while there. The pep band played at all honpe basketball and football games and did a superb job. The band finished the year by playing at the graduation ceremonies of the class of 1979. to Cn ALL-CONFERENCE BAND—1st Row: D. Von Behren. 2nd Row: T. Fischer, S Malisch. J Rohde, S. The Winter Concert, held on December 12, was one of the exceptionally well-performed concerts given at Pardeeville. The Senior Double Trio performed at the concert and did a great job. They continued later that spring to be awarded first place in class A competition at the state Solo-Ensemble competition at Whitewater. All-Conference chorus was held January 27, at Rio. Considering that it was a combination of all the Conference choirs, it turned out to be quite a success. Some of the students participated in the Solo-Ensemble Contest held at Westfield on March 3. The Spring Concert Festival was held at Poynette, May 12. A Pop Concert was held at the end of April, followed by the Spring Concert which was given in May. The Chorus ended the year by singing at the commencement ceremonies. The chorus had two student interns from the University of Wisconsin, Madison. Miss Pen- rose was here for the first semester and Miss Mansheim was here for second semester. The choir would like to thank them both for the time, effort and patience they showed toward the students, and they wish them luck with their future plans. 28 INTERNS—Patricia Penrose, Dorothy Mansheim. spon ts VARSITY FOOTBALL TEAM—Bottom Row: T. VARSITY FOOTBALL The Pardeeville varsity football team started the season out very respectfully by beating non-conference Lomira 19-0. An interested fan may have said with the kind of determination and strategy the team showed they were going to have a fantastic year, which they definitely did. The Bulldogs played very im- pressively throughout the season and wound up with a 7-2 record over all, and a 6-2 con- ference record which was good enough to tie for third place in conference with Poynette. Throughout the course of the year the Bull- dogs had only two losses. Those losses weren't by very large amounts, the score against Poy- nette was 7-18; the next loss was towards the end of the season against Westfield 6-14. The Bulldogs didn't let these losses get them down for long as they finished the season by winning the last three games. They lost a close one with Montello and then soundly de- feated Green Lake and Rio by considerable margins. When the All-Conference selections were announced, one Bulldog was honored. Senior Mark Bortz, for his second year received the award for offensive tackle; he also headed the all-star defensive squad as interior line- man and also received All-State honors. The All-Conference Honorable mention Pardeeville football players were Geoff Satina, Tony Baldowin, Todd Fischer and Tim Harris on de- fense; and Russ Bortz, Todd Fischer, Tony Baldowin on the offensive team. HOMECOMING 1978 Homecoming week was very exciting with a week full of competitive and fun activities. The classes competed against each other in games such as the monkey-dunk, canoe race and skits. Each class received points for dress- up days, too. Monday was T-shirt day; Tues- day, hat and bibs day; Wednesday, dress-up day; Thursday, toga day, and Friday, blue and gold day. After the points were totaled, the luniors received first place; the Seniors second; Sophomores third; and the Freshman fourth. Friday night everyone pulled together and started working as a school, rather than as a class. It was the night of the big game against the Rio Vikings. It was a victorious win with the Bulldogs beating the Vikings 27-0. The traditional Homecoming dance was the final activity of Homecoming week. The gym was decorated in fall colors of brown, orange, and yellow with the theme The Way I Feel Tonight.” The music was provided by “Rock- A-Way, it was a pleasant atmosphere for the crowning of the Queen, Stacey Cross, by King, Tony Baldowin. The entire week was considered very much a success and made Homecoming 1978 a memorable one. 34 4Z4U VARSITY BASKETBALL—Head Coach Mr. Bruce Hammond, D Schmitt, I Hammond, M. Enger, R. UNDEFEATED V U A L COUNTY CHAMPIONS BOYS BASKETBALL Offensive rebounding was the key to many of the victories as the Bulldogs completely dominated the boards in most of their games. Joel Hammond used his skills in the form of assists by feeding the ball into Mark Bortz, Satina, and Guenther. Russ Bortz stayed out on the point and used his play-making talents to run the Bulldogs in many games. Mark Bortz, Joel Hammond, Geoff Satina, and Wally Guenther led the scoring tor the Bulldogs. Sixth man, Greg Harruff and the reserves also contributed greatly to the Bulldog's winning efforts. Defense played a big part in the successful season, as the Bulldogs were able to get a lot of steals and convert them to fast breaks. The Big Blue Machine posted an 18 and 0 record for the 1978-79 season in league play to become Dual County Champions. The highly-ranked Bulldogs had an impres- sive 47 straight victories in dual-county con- ference action as they completed their second undefeated season. Tom Hughes, 155, took first; Tony Baldowin, 167, second; and Bill Hughes, 98, placed third Brian Bradley was out of competition for the rest of the day due to a nose injury earlier that morning. During the season there were quite a few records broken by the wrestlers, breaking rec- ords dating back to 1968 and 1969 which were the first years of wrestling at Pardeeville. The following people have broken records in the following categories: Most Team Points in one season was Tony Baldowin with 119 points. Most Takedowns in career, Tony Baldowin, 71 points. Most Career Escapes, Tom Hughes, 33 points. Bill Hughes' freshman varsity records were in Team Points, Takedowns, Reversals, Near Falls, Pins and most Matches. No freshman has ever won more than nine wrestling matches in one season. Jim Wisniewski during a J.V. match pinned his guy in 11 seconds. The team also set a new record for most takedowns in a season with 120 of them. Overall the team had a very good year and proved to be tough opponents against other schools. 45 SENIORS IN WRESTLING—T. Baldowin, T. Hughes, T. Cornford, L. Lawrence, J. Wisniewski. The girls started their season by losing to Poynette, the next match was against Portage and gave the varsity a victory while the J.V. lost. They played Lodi next, the team's re- versed themselves and the J.V. won while the varsity lost. However, both teams failed to win when they played against Poynette again. The varsity found themselves beating Portage and all lost again to Lodi. The boys also lost their first match to Poy- nette, second to Portage, and third to Lodi. They made a comeback though by beating Poynette in their next play off. The boys un- fortunately lost their last two matches against Portage and Lodi. Neither the boys or the girls made the trip to Wausau, as it was called off due to the weather. BOYS CURLING— 1st Row: M. Manthey, T. Smith, K. Neef, J. Williams, SENIORS IN CURLING — Front C. GIRL'S VOLLEYBALL With five returning letterwinners, four of whom were starters from the previous year the 1978 volleyball squad looked forward to a promising season. However, inconsistency plagued the team throughout the season and only at tournament time did the squad perform up to their potential. Only 4 seniors were lost to graduation so with a squad of 8 returning letterwinners and the strength of a productive junior varsity squad the out-look for a more promising season in 1979 is anticipated. Finally the tension was broken as last year's king and queen, Tim Cross and Marsha Bush, turned the title over to Marilyn McCarthy escorted by Mark Bortz. Miniature royalty Ben j i Crawford and Keeley Cook helped with the grand march as Chunky Pie” played the theme song. The night was a success; one of the pleasant memories of the class of 79.
