The Bulldogs had to survive strong challenges to earn their berth in the playoffs in Madison. Sub- regional play opened at Cambria. March 27 and saw the Bulldogs outclass Dual County League runner-up 75-53. Saturday night, the Big Blue exploded in the first quar- ter for 28 points and held off the Cambria Hilltoppers for a 72-50 final score. Laconia was the next stop on the way to Madison. A tall Oakfield ball club gave the Bulldogs some static in the first half, but Pardee pulled away in the second to notch a 68-54 win. Speculation by Fond Du Lac sports writers as to the quality of the Dual County Conference was dimin- ished as both the Bulldogs and the Princeton Tigers advanced to the regional championship. Hearts were beating rapidly as a surprising Tiger squad took the game down to the last few seconds be- fore a cool Jeff Smith calmly sank two free throws to put the Bulldogs in the win column by one point. On March 14 the Bulldogs journeyed east to West Bend to face a tough Oostburg team. The Flying Dutch- men came into the game with a 19-3 record and was rated ninth among state Class C schools. Second ranked Pardeeville had their hands full and didn't clinch the victory until only 11 seconds showed on the clock. Tom “Bumba” Bortz sank two charity throws to put the Bull- dogs up by four. Oostburg scored the last basket of the game, but it wasn’t enough. Sectional championship night found the Big Blue Machine battling a short Monticello Pony team. Ph I ,,Silly,‘ Tarrant erupted for 34 points to spearhead the Bulldog offensive attack. Pardeeville rebounders Jeff “Bones” Warnke, Tom Bumba” Bortz. and Jeff “Clutch” Smith held a commanding 37-24 rebounding lead. Ralph “Spunky” Turner followed Tarrant in scoring with 14 points to match his 14 assists. Final score. 76-45. A dream come true. Pardeeville in the State Tourna- ment! That was the goal set by players and fans alike when this graduating class was in the eighth grade. It was the first time since 1940. and the fourth time in his- tory that Pardeeville entered a team in the state playoffs. Coach Bruce Hammond in his third year at the helm had gotten his wish as well. His desire and dedication was instilled into the hearts of the players, and -they were determined to make a good showing at the fieldhouse. North Crawford had ideas of their own. They em- ployed a slow deliberate offense to offset the high scor- ing Bulldog offense. It worked. Pardeeville only scored 31 points; but North Crawford only lit up the scoreboard for 30. The Bulldogs advanced to the CHAMPIONSHIP GAME. Saturday.March 22. 1:05 p.m., the Pardeeville Bull- dogs, undefeated in 25 contests met the Marathon Red Raiders, 24—0, and ranked first in the state. The first half seemed to go in Pardeevilie's favor. The Bulldogs dominated the boards and opened up a nine point lead with 2:39 remaining in the second quar- ter. Marathon closed the gap, and the Bulldogs main- tained a 32-31 halftime lead. Third quarter action found Marathon open up to a six point lead 52-46. Fouls on Bortz and Warnke forced the Bulldogs to play cautiously underneath, thus slowing down the Bulldogs offensive attack. Marathon unleashed its shooters, and it seemed they couldn't miss. Throw- ing up the ball from anywhere, the basket drew the ball through via radar. Pardeevi lie’s basket had a lid on it. and the shots wouldn’t fall. Phil Tarrant led the Bull- dog attack with 20 points followed by Turner with 16. Final score. Pardeeville 57. Marathon 65. A caravan of cars and a packed reception welcomed the team home. Sentiment was high and excellent sup- port from the fans and the almost perfect season by the Bulldogs made a lasting impression on everyone. 975 ( 1 Vfl i. 1 £ T iyPcixd £LTi[[z e.niox fiyh Cbchool Co -tdi to x i: Cindy rfssistant Editori: z fdoi sox: d x s. C'Ajay u fjt ?A M£uac dr. znioriaC Late in the fall of our senior year, our lives were struck by the sudden death of our fellow classmate and friend, Dave Emmons. Though his life was short, Dave left us the real meaning of courage. In spite of his health, when there was a job to do, Dave lent a hand to help get it done. While he was with us, he didn't let his health destroy him as a person. For this, Dave will always be remembered by his graduating class of 1975. In one sense there is no death. The life of a soul on earth lasts beyond his departure. You will always feel that life touching yours, that voice speaking to you, that spirit looking out of other eyes, talking to you in the familiar things he touched, worked with, loved as familiar friends. He lives on in your life and in the lives of all others that knew him. Angelo Patri DAVID EMMONS 3 These speakers presented by Ed Gawel and Steve Pulver are in memory of Dave Emmons. ii u The annual editors and staff have taken much pride in putting together this year’s Whisper. Not only be- cause this is our final year at P.H.S., but because we are paying special tribute to Mr. lames Malinovsky, who is completing his tenth year at P.H.S. Mr. Malinovsky has been a counselor, teacher and friend to everyone. No matter what event takes place, he is always there, taking an interest. When asked about his views and impressions during his ten years at P.H.S. he stated that: The ten years I have been here in Pardeeville have been rewarding years. Each year was a unique and challenging experience as I observed the changes in the way students react to education. They are more critical of education today, and they want to be involved in school policies affecting their lives such as curriculum, co-curricular activi- ties, open campus, etc. They want their studies to be relevant to their everyday lives. I feel that the changes that we have made in these areas have improved the educational system in Pardeeville. At the present time, our curriculum is being up-dated each year so that the courses will have more relevance for the students of today; and through individualized instruction and inde- pendent study students are challenged to do their best as we help them discover more about them- selves and the surrounding world All schools need to change, and I feel the changes we have made in many areas have been for the betterment of the students. The.enriching experiences I have had working with the students here have given a new depth and meaning to my life. We would like to thank Mr. Malinovsky for his special interest, and the fine photography he provided for us in this 1975 annual. The class of 75 was also fortunate in having Mr. Forbes, our superintendent, who we feel is in tune with the students of P.H.S. He started at P.H.S. when we were freshmen and during the last four years has contrib- uted much to our educational system. The following quoted paragraphs include changes that he has initiated at P.H.S. and some of his goals for the near future. During the last four years we have struggled with a space problem, partially alleviated by the use of the student constructed house for agriculture purposes which is soon to be replaced by the new shop classroom addition. This will afford us one of the finest vocational wings in this area. We have been able to expand our course offerings allowing students more choices in their areas of interest. Recognizing that there is nothing actually sacred or magic about the traditional requirement of four years of high school attendance to qualify for a diploma, the graduation policy has now been changed to allow those capable and industrious- to graduate in three and a half years or less. We have experimented, successfully in most cases. with a limited open campus ', allowing seniors to leave school for jobs or home when not scheduled for late afternoon classes. As for the future, we are planning to initiate programs twofold in nature; programs with more practical value to supplement our academic courses and programs designed to help students accept responsibility and self-direction. The cooperative programs with Rio, Poynette and Cambria planned for next year is a start toward these goals. We are also considering alternatives to the structured class- room programs, such as work-study programs for credit, and expansion of the open campus privi- lege for those who demonstrate responsibility. The graduating class of ‘75 has appreciated having Mr. Forbes with us these past four years. ffJj. 4 L a 5 BOARD OF EDUCATION—Seated:. E. Abell, Clerk; J. Westcott. Pres; K Wenzel, Treas. New teachers, new Home- coming, and new classes. Of course, several young adults enrolled as new students. One of the most unique new students came all the way from Mexico to attend PHS. Manuel Miron, participating in the Interna- tional Fellowship, Inc. student exchange serv- ice, arrived near the end of September to begin his scheduled six month visit. Manuel, a native of Monterrey, Mexico, comes from a family of six children. An avid sports fan, he enjoys soccer, baseball, skiing, and football. Attending all Bulldog athletic events, he decided to get into the action him- self and went out for the baseball team. Thoroughly enjoying his visit, he filed a re- quest to stay the remainder of the school year and graduate with the class of 1975 in May I like the people here in Pardeeville and will miss them when I leave, but it has been a very good year in this country. Manuel noted, It was much fun! 12 PAULO SCHWARTZSTEIN The students at PHS received an early Christmas surprise and the arrival ol the second foreign exchange student. Paulo Schwartzstein was welcomed just prior to the Christmas vacation for a six months stay. Paulo comes from Campinas, Sao Paulo in the sunny country of Brazil. Quickly adjusting to the cold and snow of Wisconsin, he enjoys snowmobiling, ice skating, and skiing. The kids are very friendly and very nice, ' Paulo said, I've really enjoyed this visit, but it is a little cold.” Like Manuel, he filed a request with the International Fellowhip, Inc. and will remain the rest of the school year. 13 CLASS OF 1975 PROM COURT—Mary Walker, Lance Wegner, Patty Coons, Rick Schaffer, Queen Bridget Hughes, King Kevin Bernander, Jeff Haynes, Diana Winter. Everyone was tense, sitting on clouds, for it was the first time that the king was to be an- nounced on the night of the prom. At 9:00 when the King and Queen were finally an- nounced, the court was led up the beautiful silver spiral stairway which was the center of attraction. The 1974 Prom was really a fan- tastic beautiful night in heaven. Jennifer Landsverk, Miniature Queen Danny Taylor, Miniature King 14 15 GOOD CITIZEN—Paul Taylor; DAR—Barb Allen. They also performed at the last home game of the foot- ball season. The winter concert which received several compliments was held on Dec. 15. The concert was broadcast by WPDR FM at a later date. The band played some contemporary and rock songs. The spring concert was held in May and was also a big success. Many of the band members took part in the solo ensemble activities. For all the hard work these students did, they were very well re- warded. As always, the pep band provided a lot of excitement and rythmn for the football and basketball games. The band completed the year by playing at the graduation ceremonies. 40 BAND—Front Row: K. Gavinski, T. Bessac, J. Blochwitz. D. Frank. L Allen. D Kegler, M. Spicer. 2nd Row: R Meincke, B. Neesam, T. The Chorus started the year by performing for the Christmas Concert which was held Decem- ber 15. They sang many contempory numbers along with new pop songs of the year. The Christmas Concert was broadcast over WPDR- FM in May, the group held another successful Spring Concert. Again the Chorus had a large group to help produce a very harmonic sound. The large group worked hard together, although there were many enjoyable times shared. For the end of a very fine year of sound, the chorus sang at the graduation ceremony which was dedicated to the Class of '75''. 42 ALL-CONFERENCE CHORUS—Bottom Row: K Swenson, N. Maier, S. Bortz, C. POM PON GIRLS 1974-75 Pom Pon girls brought much enthus- iasm into the half-time of those cold but thrill- ing football games. The routines were per- formed to the music of the Pardeeville High School Band which gave them a great beat. This fall the squad did something new. They attended a clinic in Milwaukee from which they brought back many new ideas. At half-time of all home basketball games there appeared many smiling faces and some hope to keep the crowd interested; their hope came true as they showed many new varia- tions. Although there were a lot of hours spent at school for just one-half-time, it was a great feeling of doing something for the teams. Even though they worked very hard, there was al- ways time for fun and laughing. 50 THESPIANS—Bottom Row: K Ohnesorge, Treas.; K. Bernander, Pres; D. Taylor. P Taylor. V. Pres.; T Dalton. Rated in the pre-season as a dark- horse the Bulldogs opened their campaign with a 36-0 route over Fall River. Traveling to Green Lake the Bulldogs rammed home five second half TD's to post their second straight win, 48-18. Markesan came to town to play in what was supposed to be an evenly matched game. However, a stingy defense and a potent of- ense turned the game into a 34-66 rout. Par- deeville again hit the road and came back a happy winner over Montello 14-0. Unstopable, the Bulldogs posted their fifth victory of the season with a 42-0 trouncing of Cambria. Homecoming was the game of the season. An exciting week of activities built to a cres- cendo on Friday night. Princeton matching the Bulldogs with a 5-0 record, eked out a 14- 13 victory. Disheartened by their loss to Princeton, the Bulldogs could not get rolling at Randolph and fell on’the short end of a 20-14 score. Parents' night watched the Bulldogs return to life and obliterate the Rio Vikings 49-0. Finishing the season at Westfield, the Bulldogs grabbed their seventh win of the season 14-6. All-Conference honors went to three Bulldog stars. Tom Bortz was chosen as defensive line- man, Jeff Smith, offensive guard, and defensive squads as a halfback and linebacker respec- tively. Honorable mention went to Ralph Turner, Dennis Taylor, Jeff Haynes, and Paul Taylor. A week ol games and activities replaced the float-making and parade. Various contests throughout the week saw the classes competing for top honors. Greased pig catches, tug o' war pulls, ugly couple voting, and hall decorations were Fea- tured throughout the week along with tricycle relays, egg tosses, and pie eating races. The Senior class came in first place for the week followed by the Juniors, second; Sopho- mores, third; and Freshmen, fourth. The week built up to the battle of the un- beatens. The Princeton Tigers came to town to play the Bulldogs in what many called the championship game. Pardeeville lost a heart- breaker 14-13. The Homecoming dance featured the reign- ing court; King Jeff Smith and Queen Barb Huggett reigned over the festivities. The court included: Freshmen, Dave Marsh and Bobbi Burns, Sophomores, Rick Roundy and Rita Erickson, Juniors, Stuart Van Swol and Sue Nehring, and Seniors, Paul Taylor and Judy Wilke. The end of the dance turned the page of a unique and memorable Homecoming. 66 CROSS-COUNTRY—R Cook, M Spicer, D. Hayes, R. Welk, E. Pederson, B Anderson, Coach Delaney; M. Sommers, Manager. The blue and gold machine chewed up all the league foes and threaded into the tournament in hopes of a state championship. Behind the league leading scoring of Phil Tarrant, the agile ball handling of Ralph Turner, the devasting rebounding of Tom Bumba Bortz, the cat like moves of leff Bones Warnke, and the persistant defense of Jeff Smith gave Coach Bruce Hammond a super power among state basketball teams. Coming off the bench to assist in any way towards a victory, lanky Kevin Bernander came in to spark Bulldog rallies throughout the season. Paul Taylor, Jeff Haynes, Kerry Ohnesorge, and Dave Allman were called upon often to wrap up a Pardeeville victory. The blue and gold uniforms supplied many hours of enjoyable action throughout the con- ference schedule and hoped to carry the spirit of victory to even greater heights.
