1970 Whisper PARDEEVILLE SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL Pardeeville, Wis. Editor - Karla Wenzel Assistant Editors - Deborah Brant Joanne Robbins The Free Spirit 1970 has been a year of big events, and even greater things are just beyond the horizon. This is our own unique history of what has been a very unique year, and brought forth . . . The Free Spirit 2 Free to Make Friends Holding hands at Homecoming, laughter in the hall. 5 o Relax Whisper” in study hall, laughter and learning, our school year. 7 INTRODUCTION We, the graduating class of 1970, are proud to be the first class to have finished all four high school years in the new high school. We hope that the classes following us will be just as proud of Pardeeville High in their future years here. Our graduating class has had many excit- ing experiences in this high school. We have had some of the finest teachers guiding us and teaching us, so that we may be better prepared to face the world outside of school and suc- ceed in whatever we decide to do whether it be in making a living, becoming better educat- ed, or just becoming an all-around better per- son. As we became Seniors, we were more aware Qf the challenges of living and learning. We hope the students of tomorrow become aware of this because they will have better and more opportunities than we had. Continuous self- development in many fields is a necessity to- day. Class of '70 Backbone DEDICATION We, the graduating class of 1970, gratefully dedicate our annual to Mr. Bostad in apprecia- tion tor the many hours he has spent with us during our four years of high school. As our coach, he has done an excellent job. He has given us reason to have great pride in the skills of our teams. His enthusiastic interest, continuing encouragement, and praise has brought Pardeeville many successes. We give our sincere thanks to Mr. Bostad. Senior Class of 1970 8 MR. He was 17 years of age, and had a fam- ily consisting of four brothers and one sister. Piva, originally from Brazil, (where it is warm and sunny), enjoyed the snow, which was something he had never touched before. He was here for 3 months on his summer va- cation, and will be in his senior year of school when he returns home. Piva's home away from home was with Rev. and Mrs. Wayne Dungan and family. He came to the United States with 250 other Brazilian young people also attending schools. The ex- change of homes and schools was through In- ternational Fellowship Incorporated of New York. To our pleasant surprise, Ruy Pereira de Queiroz, Piva's best friend came to stay in Pardeeville until Piva returned home. Ruy made his home with Mr. and Mrs. Ronald Wopat and was sponsored by the same or- ganization as Piva. D.A.R. AWARD: Scott Seely D.A.R. The 1970 Girls Athletic Association provided girls with the opportunity to participate in ac- tivities that will promote sportsmanship, school spirit, recreation, and fitness. This in turn will set a good example for other students to fol- low. There are many sports in which the girls may participate to reach the goal of 1500 points to receive a pin. For every extra 500 points they receive a bar. The sports which they may par- ticipate in are: basketball, football, soccer, vol- leyball, curling, archery, softball, and track which was a new sport for G.A.A. this year. The G.A.A. also had traveling basketball and volleyball in which a selected group of girls in G.A.A., played against other schools including: Columbus, Rio, Cambria, and Fall River. 45 POM-POM GIRLS—Top Row: G. The band gave a superb perform- ance at the annual Winter Concert. A large majority of the band participated in the Solo Ensemble Contest at Randolph. Many solos won excellent ratings, and everyone contrib- uted their very best to the band. The Spring Concert was a brilliant success, and the band was received with great enthus- iasm by the school and the public that eve- ning. The Christmas Concert, which was given on December 9 and broadcast live on WPDR-FM, was enjoyed by all. It consisted of songs done by the entire chorus and also several novelty numbers. Many members of the chorus participated in the Solo-Ensemble contest in Randolph and many received excellent ratings. The en- tire chorus participated in the Spring Festival which was also held in Randolph. The Chorus then performed their annual Spring Concert. There were many beautiful songs with several specialties. The last activitty of the year, for the Chorus, was the Graduation Program. A large crowd of students, lead by the cheerleaders, formed a snake dance which ended downtown and was followed by a pep rally. Homecoming day, October 10, was filled with much activity. The parade was home- coming afternoon. Each class had their own individual floats. The Juniors placed first with their entry, We've Got Victory in a Shell, while the Seniors took second, and the Sopho- mores received third. The court also appeared in the parade. They were: Freshmen—Barb Tuss and Bill Wenzel; sophomores—Kristy Lar- sen and Terry Anderson; juniors—Jan Williams and Doug Russell; seniors—Vicki Cook and Leon McQueen. Reigning over the homecom- ing festivities were King Greg Wolf and Queen Pat Tuss. The game in the evening was a very excit- ing one. The fighting Bulldogs defeated the Markesan Hornets, 14-8, putting them in a three way tie for first. The highlight of the Homecoming activities was the dance, led by King Greg and Queen Pat. Furnishing the music to the theme of “Time of the Season, was the Wheezer Lock- inger group — then another wonderful and exciting homecoming came to an end. 52 HOMECOMING COURT—Barb Tuss, Bill Wenzel, Jan Williams, Doug Russell, Pat Tuss, Queen; Greg Wolf, King; Leon McQueen, Vicki Cook, Terry Anderson, Kristy Larsen. Time of the Season 53 We’re No. I WE'RE No. 1 The Pardeeville Bulldogs' young team ended an amazing year with a three way tie with Montello and Rio for the Dual-County Confer- ence Championship. The first victory came when an overpower- ing Bulldog team scored twice against non- conference Wautoma, with the ending score 12-6. The first conference game against Rio was a real heart breaker, and the Bulldogs' only blemish was a 12-6 loss. Pardeeville continued the Princeton Tigers' losing streak by a 27-6 score. Mark Dungan, Corky Grimes, Mark Polnow, and Dave Tar- rant had touchdowns. Fall River fell by a close 7-6 hard fought game. Bulldogs' place kicker, Corky Grimes scored the all important extra point. The Cambria Hilltoppers' sad Homecoming was due to the defeat of 21-6, handed to them by the fabulous Pardeeville football team. Homecoming came to Pardeeville the night of the game with the Markesan Hornets. The Hornets' sting was not enough to stop the Bull- dogs from winning l’4-8. The Pardeeville Bulldogs again moved into the Championship game with defending champs, Montello Hilltoppers. The mighty Bulldogs showed who was boss that night in the best and biggest game of the year. Par- deeville triumphed with a 21-6 victory. The Bulldogs’ defensive line, Greg Wolf, Corky Grimes,. Luke Spicer, Scott Seely, Larry Breneman, and Bob Wolf; line-backers John Bortz, Kurt Dickinson; and also defensive backs Dave Tarrant, Mark Dungan, Mark Polnow, and Terry Anderson, only allowed 44 confer- ence points to their opponents. The offensive unit worked well together to compile 133 points in conference pay. The offensive team includ- ed: Greg Wolf and Corky Grimes at end; John Bortz and Scott Seely at tackle; Kurt Dickinson at center; Mark Dungan, Leon McQueen, and Dave Tarrant at backs; and quarterback, Doug Russell. Randolph was easy game for the Pardee- ville champs as the Bulldogs shut them out by a 37-0 score. The 11th Annual Football Banquet, always a big success, featured Mike Farley, a former Pardeeville football coach. John Bortz received the Most Valuable Player award. Honorary Captain went to senior, Scott Seely. Stagg Award, for the most improved player, was accepted by Dave Tarrant, and the Dr. Wink- ler Award for outstanding lineman was pre- sented to senior, Greg Wolf. There were only two boys on the All-Con- ference team this year, Greg Wolf—Offensive and Defensive end. and John Bortz—Defensive linebacker and Offensive tackle. CHEERLEADERS—Standing: L. Ernst, S. However, both of the teams made up for the opening loss by defeat- ing Poynette. The varsity tallied 10 to Poy- nette's 6 while the junior varsity racked up 7 to Poynette's 6 The Bulldogs were considered to be a threat in the Midwestern Wisconsin Curling League this year. The Lodi and Portage teams were also contenders, while Madison West was the defending champ. Mr. Bouck and his varsity, nicknamed the Fearsome Foursome” were expected to have a winning season and from there on, who knows? 65 WRESTLING—Top Row: Mr. Bostad, Advisor, D. Hayes, F. Meierdirk, B. Their first match, with Markesan, was a real confidence builder for the young Bulldogs as they racked up a total of eight pins and one decision to blunt the Hornets' sting by a score of 48 to 10. The Bulldogs, hungry for another win, met their next opponent, Green Lake, and had a tough time with them; however, the Bulldogs emerged victorious again. This time Pardee- ville totalled six pins and three decisions to roll up a score of 34 to 16, over Green Lake. Pardeeville was ready to take home a win over Westfield, but they were sadly disap- pointed as Westfield rolled over the Bulldogs by a score of 41 to 9. The Bulldogs still man- aged to have a good showing by getting one pin and a pair of ties. It was a good season for the grapplers even though they had some new and tougher opponents including Madison Holy Name and Wisconsin Dells. The Bulldogs also made a good showing in the Montello tournament. 66 TRACK—Top Row: D. Hayes, M. Tuss, F. Meierdirk, B. Lytle, M.Dungan, S. Seely, D. Steele, R. Anacker, B. Winter. Third Row: J.
