English MR. EMIL J. SANZARI English English Department Chairman Ham Club Adviser MRS. JOANNE A. BARSALONA English Future Teachers MISS RUBY BISHAR English President, Education Association of Paramus BE! Beauty and excitement . . . sparking the flame of creativity. To ignite the glow of imagination within each student is the goal of the English department at Paramus High School. Since literature opens wide the recesses of the imagination, the Enghsh department, in order to explore the vast expanses of the literary world, offers a survey of writings, both classic and modem, in each of the three years the students are in the high school. During the sophomore year, students are introduced to the five genres of literature: the short story, poetry, the essay, the novel, and the drama. From the bizarre stories of Edgar Allan Poe to the contemporary dramas of Eugene O ' Neill, the rich range of American authors is sampled. Such famous literary periods as the Romantic and the Transcendental are also examined during the junior year and on into the senior year. In the course of the senior year, the whole gamut of Enghsh literature is surveyed. Beowulf, the great epic poem, and Chaucer ' s Canterbury Tales are read and studied as a prelude to Enghsh literature. Later, Elizabethan pieces of writing are delved into, represented by many of the most glorious works found in any language, e.g., Julius Caesar, Romeo and Jul et, Hamlet, Macbeth, and Shakespeare ' s sonnets. In addition to ah this, each senior has the chance to express his or her creativity through a multi-media project. These senior projects may be attempted individually or in groups. Some of the most successful are presented in June at SPIN (Senior Project Involvement Night) for parents and friends. Another way to express oneself is through writing. In accordance with this a journalism class has been added to the Enghsh curriculum. Further still, ah students are offered a supplementary reading course to strengthen their reading speed and comprehension. Mr. E. Sanzari ' s Enghsh department, it is evident, is truly an unending swirl of activity. MR. ROBERT E. BOYCE Enghsh Delphian MR.
