Chering Pirates hoil Varsity cagers' 56-54 victory over Lyn- wood Knights, February 19. 044 guna Jeemem er white Coast League Sports- flying high over P.H.S., the fought against consistently competition. Football, with its exciting half time shows, traditionally dedi- cated home games, such as Dad's Night, and its Homecoming climax, filled the stage from Sep- tember to December. This year's Varsity, which followed 1958's Coast League Championship squad, found the Qoing a little rugged. Both Varsity and J.V. teams provided many a thrill for loyal fans but experienced losing seasons. However, the high-spirited Bee eleven captured the League Crown, for the first time in Pirate his- tory, in the final minutes of play against the War- ren Bears. Placing higher than ever before in Coast League ratings, the fighting Pirate Varsity cagers finished the exciting 1960 season with a 15-10 record, a third place in Coast League, a consolation trophy from their own Paramount In- vitational Tournament, and, as a perfect finale- With the Qreen and manship Flag again Maroon and White tough Coast League a championship trophy won at the Banning Tour- ney held during the Christmas holidays. On the other hand, the J.V.'s, Bee's, and Cee's suffered losing seasons, but feel the experience gained should be a great asset to the Pirate teams of 1960-62. With the advent of spring, baseball, track and tennis move into the spotlight. Unable to equal the power-packed 1959 Coast League Champion Pirate nine, this year's horsehiders bowed to superior competition and dragged out a one-win season against such League standouts as Compton's Tarbabes. J.V.'s fared little better. Pirate spikesters, competing with giants, for the Coast League boasts some of the best track teams in Southern California, made a proud showing, with steady victories in the broad iump, pole vault, and hurdles, Pirate raqueteers round out this year's sport calendar uneventfully. largely sophomores and iuniors, they count heavily on 1961 to even scores.
