Fuszard and President Steven Fletcher view with keen insight the changes this exciting year has brought, Each feels satisfaction in added classroom space, the growing beauty of the campus, and above all, this year's fine morale on all occasions, K. ,s A-gy, .I' Six years ago Pirates enrolled in a new school to the sound of workmens saws, hammers, and drills. Filled with spirit, they ignored the sandy acres and treeless Rally Court. They set about buildirg a representative government and fine tradt'ons that would guide those to come. Wisely they pool initiative, training, and experience to solve problems of finance, policy, growth, and personnel. How effective they are was proved this fall by a most successful bond election which will allow this campus to handle its mounting enrollment. A graduate of the University of California, with a Doctor's Degree from University of Southern California, he managed his usual full schedule, demanding iustice, diplo- macy and humor, on campus, as well as the presidency of the Rotary Club for 1958-1959. Agree Lettermen I INV iuow 'WN One of the largest and most exclusive clubs on campus, the Varsity Club is limited to athletes who have earned a varsity letter in Pirate sports. This - year was the most successful in the club's history. To start its activities, members raffled off the home game footballs and sold popcorn. Starting the victory dances after the game was another club first, Sponsoring the annual Sweethearts' Ball, at which Frances Maletta and Fred Hill were crowned King and Queen of Hearts, a picnic at lrvine Park, and a weekend at Crestline made this year memorable for the Lettermen. .--I 'K...,4 L . ,, I' 'kv 74 1 rf' Vat' Q g Q' R Jerry Otterson, president, Jim Little, vice president, Jerry Hombs, secretary-treasurer, Red Bennett, sergeant-at-arms. i Qi xl gg. ,.- ff - - f .. 3' ' 5 1 1 S , HQCQ SCL I f S if 4 A iw . Its members raised and lowered official flags daily, served as a color guard at games, assemblies, and special presentations, conducted a much needed patrol during football season, and represented Pirates in the Compton and Paramount parades. Super- vised trips took them to the rifle range in October and April as well as Camp Pendleton in the spring. Four ca- dets, Richard Baker, Roger Freed, John Ophein, Ray Grout, were privileged to go to a rifle match held at Barston, May 9-10, for skilled marksmen. Such responsibility and training stands Pirates in good stead when they enter the armed services of their country. of-5 Row One: Second Lieutenant Richard Baker, Master Sergeant James Mills Corporal Arvln Uhrich Master Sergeant Charles Norcross.
