X . Cf? we iBuint tn arallels Faced with a disiointed world, threatened by atomic disaster, we, the staff of the 1957 Jolly Roger, choose as our theme Disneyland, a man-made creation whose atmosphere and dreams express those of Paramount Senior High School Pirates. Disneyland, our enchanting neighbor, is being created daily by a man and his associates who honor the past, enjoy the present, and anticipate the future. Pirate leaders, equally important in their sphere, strive to attain the same ultimate goal, to create a place where people may find both happiness and knowledge. Main Street symbolizes the bustle of daily life. Here plans, supervision, law and order revolve around administrators, whether they are housed in Disneyland's City Hall or E 37. Tomorrowland holds the blueprints of a future world. Through the mazes of a push button age, each Pirate seeks the trail to the treasures of a full life. Fantasyland is the tnmeless kingdom of ringing laughter and shared fun, whether you soar with Dumbo or run a Carnival booth. Aboard our Pirate Caravel, an agile crew finds, in a year of sportsf challenge, strife, and rich reward. tlilain Street marketing tn Huh nt' Fit all Enmurrnwlanhl 10-40 43-88 M :Www WMM ' .' ,MJ ' g, R MJ XM yyyxii' . f1fe5'2 ,J fix ff 'ff' ,H Q Jfvf' igvrrh tu Bnrkvil at ilkzntuatir IF1111 iiliratvlanh 92-118 'I22-'I56 I i age interest whether they are ancient models or custom Chevies. MW J Hub of Disneyland, Main Street, with its laughter-provoking horse cars, ancient autos, and swaying surreys, thrills staff members and their advisor, who seek inspiration for the 1957 Jolly Roger. Here as in the Pirate Rally Court beats the pulse of the community. On bus- iness bent its traffic surges by. Unseen by'the eager, interested crowds which flow through Disney- land's flower-decked squares and fill our bustling corridors, but vital to all plans and their fulfillment are both Disneyland's Directors and Principal Melvin Fuszard, Disney- land's huge staff and Paramount's executive personnel, their public relations men and the Pirate pub- lication staffs. lt is they who work hard to ease friction, maintain stand- ards, and seek a better way to do the iob. ii, jliklain Street- ulse gs M il um www' wmksiwn' 1 Q wiv 5 im ' w 0 ,A l i., .,,, i ltxls Q m .. President x . . s si mu 1 nr :min nmu 1, Mr Melvin S Zuszard, principal, checks the busy calendar with Senior Sonia Nielsen. Steady, purposeful growth is the keynote of Paramount set by Principal Melvin Fuszard. Four years, thanks to this calm and democratic graduate of Wisconsin University, have netted few crises and many improved procedures. Last fall both the new closed campus and activity card policies clicked smoothly into place. Campus morale was evidenced by the retention of the Coast League Sportsmanship Trophy for the second consecutive football season. Valuable work in curriculum building was carried on by faculty committees. Even polio vaccine shots for adults and Pirates alike produced little more than a ripple on the placid sea of day-by-day living and learning. Underlying this healthy atmosphere rests Mr. Fuszard's faith in individual Pirates and his dedication to the vital role of education in this swiftly changing world. Tbsp who Int the nurse uf this Progress Action, decision, and iustice, tempered with humor, fill the busy days of Vice Principal Harold Tonini. Implementing policies established by the Paramount Unified School District Board, the Pirate faculty, and the Student Council makes his iob no easy one. His forthrightness, courage, and sense of proportion help him and all Pirates devoted to the ideal of a clean, vital, and purposeful school to come nearer to the realization of their goal. Alumnus of the Universities of California and Southern California and former officer of the United States Navy, Mr. Tonini is a source of strength and confidence to those who seek his aid or counsel. For the first time the group handled senior graduation announcements in addition to school supplies and such money-makers as candy, pop, pretzels, potato chips and fritos, sold to long lines at snack and lunch. ajfinances are jun , Tllhep Sap ttf J My My 'mu tr pf 9 J if f K Zi! Then suddenly it was May with a rush of mem- orable dates and doings: May 8, Career Day, May 23, Senior Block Signature Day, May 29, the Senior Prom at the famed Beverly Hilton Hotel. June spelled graduation and brought its annual magic. Unforgettable were June 4 and Ditch Day, June 6, Talent Show, June ll, Senior Breakfast, June I3, Commencement on Pirate Field, climax of every senior year. .IOLENE BROWN, DON KETZENBARGER, Senior Class Representatives. Hard to replace in Council, Letterman Club, and Sigma Rho Alpha will be this i957 King of Hearts. 46 POLLY PIRATE MARILYN GRIFFIN, who combines grace, taste, and sweetness to perfection, is definitely the Pirates' choice! Voted 1956 Carnival Queen and i956 Homecoming Queen, she was also chosen Polly by fellow seniors! Girls' League found her a lovely friendship chairman and an efficient treasurer. After serving two years with the Pacettes, Tootie became a popular song leader. MJ JULIE WISBY, JOYCE MENARD Junior Class Secretary and Treasurer. Juniors, whose leadership is markedly coed and whose president, Jacque Sharp, served her class in the same capacity in its sophomore year, were moving into the role of campus leadership. Money-making with iingle iars, a Homecoming Pin sale, and roller skating parties loomed large. Following tradition, they chose their smart charcoal class sweaters and selected a handsome class ring design. Robert Negrete, class represent- ative in his sophomore year, never misses a dance. A style- setter, he also served as Bee team quarterback. 7 Public-spirited Linda Adkins has served her school well as Girls' league, Class, and Student Council representative for two years. Half-time finds Karen Cook performing as Pacette or Flag Girl. Versatile, she rates on class councils, in A Cappella Choir, or Sigma Rho Alpha. A way with words puts Renae Taylor in editorial spots on Porthole and Jolly Roger staffs. Striving for preci- sion, novelty, and grace, the Pirate Drill Team is always a favorite whether on pa- rade, at assemblies, or under the great arc lights on Homecoming Night. The wonders of physics in an atomic age interest boys and girls alike. Together they explore the realms of heat, light, sound, and mechanics. Class experiments ,under the watchful eye of Mr. Austin Harper, lead budding scientists and future physicists far from teenage paths of rock n' roll. ln- spired by tempting scholarships now offered in science, college-bound Pirates work eager- ly to measure up. NJ:-W Teaching Pirates the theory of the operation of automobile units is part of Mr. Richard Orcutt's iob. They, in turn, prepare note- books tor future reference and use. The steering mechanisms, suspension systems, and other design features of different makes of cars are compared and evaluated, Popular, the course makes clear the functions of the various mechanical and electrical units. Life science, offered by Mr. Leland Allen and Mr. John Bergmann, is an interesting course in the general science field. Animal her- edity and reproduction are on the class agenda. Since it deals with life about them, Pirates find it fun as well as educational. From text and exten- sive experiment they learn the func- tions that enable man to assume the role of master. Training and practice on up-to-date office machines, handled by Mr. Nello DiCorpo, is deservedly popu- lar. Here Pirates prepare for future positions as they become familiar with the operation of rotary calcu- lators, adding and listing machines, ten-key adding machines, dicta- phones, and voice writers. Rehearsing for Caine Mutiny or l2 Angry Women is great fun in Mr. Edwin's Groh's drama class. AI- though few, if any, of these actors will reach Hollywood or Broadway, they find the poise, diction and con- fidence gained here valuable. Their productions add a much needed ele- ment to campus entertainment. :lr PW Buenos dias! Spanish classes lend P.H.S. an atmosphere of old Mexico. Learning to read, write, and speak Spanish correctly is the iob of college preparatory students. They travel the roads of Spain and old Mexico, led by Senora Virginia Nelson, with limit- less enthusiasm. Geometry, taught patiently to math-minded Pirates, boasts many college-bound students. Dealing with figures drawn on a flat sur- face, this class is for enrollees with definite professions in mind. The course, reviewing algebra, stresses the fundamentals of trig- onometry and is taught by Mrs. Eva O'Con- nell and Mr. Donald Frederick. X illnmurrntn ruins nut nf Tlluhap The ambitious Porthole crew offers a boost to team morale and school spirit when its issues appear every other Friday. Eager, democratic, and rushed are its reporters who gather all the news. Supervised by Mrs. Esther Ericson and under the editorship of Fran Lewis, these journalists are forever con- cern with copy, accuracy, deadlines, and the mounting costs of publication. The Pirate art department, in the hands of Mr. Harold Collins, welcomes students to the realm of fine arts. Each develops his own bent and assists, as well, with projects beneficial to the campus, such as Football Banquet and Carnival Dance decorations. Sketching trips to Knott's Berry Farm and the Huntington Library offer relaxation and inspiration. Winning the admiration of the entire student body, the Paramount Senior High School Pirate Orchestra has completed a challenging schedule of fine perform- ances under the baton of Conductor Karle Major. Providing the music for pep as- semblies proved the orchestra an asset as an entertainment feature. Real musician- ship was evident in the two Christmas programs given on the Pirate campus, these stressed traditional Yule numbers. Traveling to the Anaheim High School Music Festival, March 9, the group presented a fine program and won a rating of excel- lent on its interpretation of such selections as Ballet Parisien by Offenbach, Little Rhapsody in Blue by Gershwin and June is Busting Out All Over by Rogers. The Paramount Music Festival, held May 9, gave the Pirate musicians a final oppor- tunity to display conspicuous talent and hard-earned elan. alent ani: empu jllileet Row One: Shirley Dowlin, Karen Lay, Nancy Mehr, Joyce laMonte, Karen Haug, LaVonne Taggart, Carla Nielsen, Virginia Kern, Linda Clark, Carolyn Brooks, Greg LoVetere, Shasta Keeling, Bill Tomich, Bill Young.
