QW . ,tw rrflaller ,fri Wlstronger Mrs. Jeri Toal Mrs. Sue Bardon Department Chairman N As a department, we are more unified since we are smaller than last year, said English Department Chairman Jeri Toal. With the outback in students, the English Department had a outback in teachers. English teachers also saw their classes going down in size. They also experienced having their own classrooms for the first time in the past few years. Mrs. Toal said that the department would be updating their English courses to benefit the stu- dents. Sophomore English will be added to the curriculum in 3 different phases: English A, B and C. Sophomore English will be required next year. Guest speakers were also featured in some classes to get a more interesting atmosphere in the classroom. Mrs. Mary Strome, Reading Department Spe- cialist, leads a reading program that works on a one-to-one basis with students to improve skills in reading comprehension and vocabulary. Along with Mrs. Strome are four aides: Mrs. Stutzman, Mrs. Mitchell, Mrs. Dempsey and Mrs. Moyer. The aides take 3 to 4 students each hour and work about 15 minutes with each student. Student aides from Advanced English classes also come in to help the students. The Reading Program benefits the entire stu- dent body. lvlathematics. . . making it all add up AQ' it The Paradise Valley Math depart- ment offers courses ranging from Gen- eral Math to calculus. Each class is designed to strengthen the mathemati- cal ability of each student. Starting next year all entering fresh- man will be required to take three years of math to graduate. A movement away from classroom paper work to mechanical and com- puter work is being emphasized. What I would like to see is that the district could afford calculators and computer terminals for each student's use, said Mr. Mac Haynie, math department chairman.
