With the outback in students, the English Department had a outback in teachers. English teachers also saw their classes going down in size. They also experienced having their own classrooms for the first time in the past few years. Mrs. Toal said that the department would be updating their English courses to benefit the stu- dents. Sophomore English will be added to the curriculum in 3 different phases: English A, B and C. Sophomore English will be required next year. Guest speakers were also featured in some classes to get a more interesting atmosphere in the classroom. Mrs. Mary Strome, Reading Department Spe- cialist, leads a reading program that works on a one-to-one basis with students to improve skills in reading comprehension and vocabulary. Along with Mrs. Strome are four aides: Mrs. Stutzman, Mrs. Mitchell, Mrs. Dempsey and Mrs. Moyer. The aides take 3 to 4 students each hour and work about 15 minutes with each student. Student aides from Advanced English classes also come in to help the students. The Reading Program benefits the entire stu- dent body. Science . . increases powers of Mrs Beverly Lewis Mr Jim Schonaerts Mr Ron Smith O b I O n Science really deals with the art of observation and the attempt by man to understand the world in which he lives. Students in the department are con- stantly provided with opportunities to make such observations and to draw conclusions from them. This hopefully leads the students to better understand the way in which events in nature are related by cause and effect relation- ships, said Science Department Chairman Ray Collins. The science teachers make the year exciting and interesting by going on trips such as an open house at St. Joseph's Hospital to observe machines and surgery in action. A guest speaker was invited to talk about Cardio Pulmo- nary Resuscitation CC.P.P.j. Physiolog- ical received new equipment to assist teaching muscular physiological anan- tomy, nervous and respiratory sys- tems. Chemistry students attended NAU Engineering Day and went to Palo Verde to see APS's nuclear project and went to Phoenix's Crime Lab. U of A sent a guest speaker to discuss chemi- cal engineering for those who hope to get involved in that field. Computer terminals are another addition to Science to help teach and educate the students. Space Science visited the Kitt Peak observatory and ASU planetarium. Cottonwood, Sedona and the Pay- sen area were places the geology class traveled to observe rock formations. Science offers many things to many pfeople and is a great way learn about i e 67
