Learningto Cooperate 5 E sa Q, Students in Symphonic Winds practice for an upcoming performance at the District Office. David Moore, Rob Oberlander and Tim Hinds concentrate on the music in choir. Approximately 25 percent of the students at Paradise Valley High School are involved in the Performing Arts Department. The Department includes radio and television, drama, choral and instrumental classes. Students in the instrumental classes at PVI-iS learn disci- pline, social awareness, coordi- nation and cooperation with others. Proper breathing proce- dures are also learned by the students. Choral students in the Per- forming Arts learn basic musi- cianship, proper vocal produc- tion, self discipline and pride. Students in the Performing Arts may build their musical back- ground for a possible career in the different forms of the arts. Radio and Television students at PVHS learn to use equipment including microphones and cameras for video taping class and student-made productions. Drama students learn their acting skills through practice and performance during the school year. Drama students learn their acting skills from construction to make-up to actual stage presence. b5

Science . . increases powers of Mrs Beverly Lewis Mr Jim Schonaerts Mr Ron Smith O b I O n Science really deals with the art of observation and the attempt by man to understand the world in which he lives. Students in the department are con- stantly provided with opportunities to make such observations and to draw conclusions from them. This hopefully leads the students to better understand the way in which events in nature are related by cause and effect relation- ships, said Science Department Chairman Ray Collins. The science teachers make the year exciting and interesting by going on trips such as an open house at St. Joseph's Hospital to observe machines and surgery in action. A guest speaker was invited to talk about Cardio Pulmo- nary Resuscitation CC.P.P.j. Physiolog- ical received new equipment to assist teaching muscular physiological anan- tomy, nervous and respiratory sys- tems. Chemistry students attended NAU Engineering Day and went to Palo Verde to see APS's nuclear project and went to Phoenix's Crime Lab. U of A sent a guest speaker to discuss chemi- cal engineering for those who hope to get involved in that field. Computer terminals are another addition to Science to help teach and educate the students. Space Science visited the Kitt Peak observatory and ASU planetarium. Cottonwood, Sedona and the Pay- sen area were places the geology class traveled to observe rock formations. Science offers many things to many pfeople and is a great way learn about i e 67
