of government I had much fun at Boys' State and I learned a lot about the way our government operates but the best thing for me was the interesting people that I got to meet, said Senior Peter Amsterdam. Peter, along with Scott Fehrman, Tom Johnson and David Moravek, seniors, were the representatives for Boys' State which took place at Northern Arizona Uni- versity in Flagstaff. Boys' and Girls' State are week long government workshops in which representatives from every high school in Arizona get the chance to participate in the running of a government. Each representative is assigned a county, a city and a political party. The representatives then make speeches, have pep rallies, hear speakers and hold caucuses. Among the speakers heard at Boys' State was Governor Bruce Babbit. The representatives from Paradise Valley for Girls' State at the University of Arizona in Tucson were Betsy Monroe, Joanne Picerno and Michelle dela Puente, seniors. Girls' State is held separately from Boys' State but is organized basically the same way. Joanne was Precinct Committeewoman and chosen first alternate for Girls' Nation. Betsy was the Mayor and was also interviewed for Girls' Nation and Michelle was City Official. City action was intense and we had the opportunity to really make laws and see the processes of govern- ment by actually participating, said Joanne.
