Monica Ratcliff follows through with her swing as she wins the rally against her Thunderbird opponent. The girls' Tennis teams went through a rebuilding year under a new coach, Miss Teresa Soncrant. The team had only two returning varsity players, seniors Kim Mills and Teresa Ross. Many of the girls who played on the Freshman team came back to play on the JV and Varsity level. A... of JV Girls' Tennis: Top Bow: Kim Klein, Lisa Walsh, Lisa Coe, Laurie Dranburg, Doris Conklin, Linda Rounbehler, Shyri Nishimoto, Lisa Martin. Bottm: Mary Beth Walsh. The girls have done very well since some of them had never played tennis before, stated Miss Soncrant. They participated in the West High Invitational where they met with some of the top contending schools. Although they did not place high in the tournament, it gave them experi- ence forthe Skyline Divisionals.

Mike Martain, Tony Cuneo Jess Frosh Coach Jim Popham looks on anxiously to give his team support. 7 Preibe, Tom Jensen, Glenn The best meets were against Apollo and Pres- cott. The team wrestled hard, said Coach Grun- dler. The freshman wrestling team finished this sea- son with an overall 5 wins and 5 losses. This year's student coach, Jim Popham, gradu- ated two years ago from Paradise Valley and was also state Champ. Jim Popham is currently enrolled at Glendale Community College to fur- ther his education. The team participated at the Phoenix College Tournament against freshnmen from all over the state. Captains were chosen on a rotation due to their performance before a match. ' A requirement for wrestlihg is that the student pass four subjects, have a goodsstanding with the school and have a desire for the sport. Tennis. .swings into busy season 'Sh' The teams are young but they are gaining experience, said Jim Schonaerts, Coach. They went up against some ofthe best in the State dur- ing the West High tournament. The team has one returning player, Gary Ben- nett, who plays in the number one position. The rest ot the team are players who also played on the Freshman team. These Freshmen will be the heart of the next year's varsity team.
