i l blanning for your future i P t According to a questionnaire filled out by the graduating class of 1980, twenty-eight percent planned to seek full-time employment. The Jobs for Ari- zona Graduates program was designed to help those seniors. JAG is a comprehensive program designed to help students make the transition from high school to a full time job. lt does this by providing the student with basic job skill information which is predicted to lessen the highschool unemploy- ment level. ' Assistant Principal, Dr. Thomas Nightingale, is very involved in the pro- gram. Last summer he went to Cha- nute Air Force base to learn more about the JAG program. l am very excited about the program and feel it will be very successful, stated Dr. Nightingale. He also hired Cynthia Batko and Teresa Soncrant for the job training specialist positions at Paradise Valley. A Ms. Soncrant and Ms. Batko direct all their energies towards those seniors who want help. They are very flexible to meet at the students' convenience. They are ,eager to teach the basic job skills such as leadership, responsibility, motivation and communication. Along with that they include practical living information such as finding an apart- ment, budgeting and understanding contracts. . Ms. Batko and Ms. Soncrant planned group meetings, conferences and guest speakers to teach these skills. They held basic job skill competition with other Arizona schools instituting the JAG program. The program doesn't end at gradua- tion. instead Ms. Soncrant and Ms. Batko will keep in touch with graduates for a year to make sure everything is going well. The JAG' program was initiated by President Carter and the United States Department of Labor, then tested in Delaware last year. The Arizona legis- lature proposed the program be insti- tuted here. Paradise Valley is one of the. twenty districts throughout the state of Arizona chosen to institute the JAG program. Opening Section 5 . l l
