Students were asked to do two term papers. one for the first semester and one for the second semester. They were given outlines and asked to prepare their papers on different careers in math, fitting themselves into a career with mathe- matics. I think Algebra 3-4 students are highly qualified and should start investigating careers which require mathemat- ics. said Mrs. Blomquist. This year there were many areas of math from which to choose starting with general math and moving up to the new computer class. With all the computers used today if you wish to have a career in a mathematical field, you would want to take all the math and computer classes you could. So that students have more of an opportunity to learn about computers outside the classroom, a new club was formed, the computer club, Mrs. Penny Peterson Mr. Samuel Polvino Mrs. Carole Root Mrs Linda Thieken ' f 9 Z 9 'ii ' L '

230 This year two new courses have been added to the Social Studies curriculum, stated Mr. Augie Zito, department chair- man. These classes are Advanced Placement Economics and Self Study Economics. The self study course gives the student a packet of work and then he works at his own pace. It is being taught by Mr. William Pellett. The Advanced Placement Eco- nomics class goes into more detail about various topics. Guest speakers from places such as Alcoholics Anonymous, Planned Parenthood, the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Phoenix Police Department visited various classes in the Social Studies department. All the speakers are thrilled about coming and they are thi best learning experience for the students, said Mrs. Santh4 Niedner, social studies teacher. Other classes in the department are Sociology and Psychol ogy. The students indicate their interests which designate: what will be taught in the classes. Topics taught this year were peer pressure, alcoholism, abortion, marriage, religion, anc education. This year we are reorganizing and making some consistency in what is taught in the history classes but alsc keeping the academic freedom, stated Mrs. Niedner. ff-- Mr. Augie Zito Mr. William Farrell Mr. Pat Lindmark Mrs. Santhe Niedner Department Chairman R' Mrs. Mildred PClIiS Mr. John Pierce Mr. Ed Robinson Miss Jenny Smith I 1 .L Atiky VA ss . .. . . 1 ..'
