This year the Science Department had one of the busiest years ever. Among some of the activities was a trip to the Payson Area by Mr. Cherry,s geology classes where they visited the Tonto National Bridge, a huge national stone bridge that passes over Tonto Creek. On this trip they also visited Diamond point, which is an area where quartz is so pure that it looks like diamonds which is why it is called Diamond Point. On another trip they visited the Prescott National Forest near Sedona, where they visited an active gold mine. 1 The biology classes visited the Exercise Physiology laboratory at Arizona State Uni- versity, At this laboratory, various monitors are placed on the subjects while they are underwater to determine the fat content of their bodies. This year the physical size of the department also increased, with the addition of P-9, one of the portable buildings. Although it is used as a chemistry room, it is not set up for labs, and whenever labs needed to be done, the classes had to switch rooms with one of the other chemistry teachers. Three credits of English are required to graduate, which is also an important part of the entrance requirement of most colleges, so English is an important part of our curriculum at Paradise Valley High School. For the first time, advanced English classes are offered in all years. I really enjoy teaching Advanced Junior English. lt is a challenge teaching an advanced class. I enjoy teaching creative and motivative young adults. The rewards are many, said Miss Mary Murphy, Advanced English teacher. New classes added this year are Survey of Literature, for stu- dentsjust out of reading, and World Literature, the study of cul- ture's effects on writings. Many teachers in the department invited guest speakers into the classroom. Robin Armstrong, an alumni of Paradise Valley High, now a professional film-maker, explained how to make a movie in the process of showing his film, Cutting Loosef, A forum program was created this year to enrich and broaden the students' leaming, under the supervision of Mr. Les Leiter. The program included drop-out students from THOR, The Other Road, a disciplinary school in conjunction with the Paradise Valley School System, who told of their experiences and why they drop- ped out. National Honor Society members taught study skills to the Freshman English classes in another Forum presentation. 226 Mr. George Werner Mrs. Sue Bardon Mrs. Lori Decker ,li .
