Students enrolled in Foreign Language have the opportunity to explore the customs of the countries where the language is spoken. Learning the languages of Spanish, French or German are not the only areas covered in the Foreign Language Department. Third and fourth year students are given the oppor- tunity to cook during their classes. Many games are available to the students in the language they are studying. These include Yahtzi, Monopoly, Scrabble, Concentration, Jeopardy and Bingo. The German classes received new text books for their first and third year classes. The books are a mys- tery novel that have cassette tapes in which the story is read and students are given tests and quizzes. Guests spoke to the classes about the different social and cultural aspects and how Germany differs from America. One of the highlights of the Department is the opportunity the students are given to travel to Mexico to hear and speak the Spanish language with the peo- ple of Mexico in authentic settings. This gives the stu- dent a more thorough appreciation of the customs and traditions of the country. Students interested in learning a language that might not be offered as a regular class may enroll in self study programs set up for Russian, Spanish or German. XX l. This year the Science Department had one of the busiest years ever. Among some of the activities was a trip to the Payson Area by Mr. Cherry,s geology classes where they visited the Tonto National Bridge, a huge national stone bridge that passes over Tonto Creek. On this trip they also visited Diamond point, which is an area where quartz is so pure that it looks like diamonds which is why it is called Diamond Point. On another trip they visited the Prescott National Forest near Sedona, where they visited an active gold mine. 1 The biology classes visited the Exercise Physiology laboratory at Arizona State Uni- versity, At this laboratory, various monitors are placed on the subjects while they are underwater to determine the fat content of their bodies. This year the physical size of the department also increased, with the addition of P-9, one of the portable buildings. Although it is used as a chemistry room, it is not set up for labs, and whenever labs needed to be done, the classes had to switch rooms with one of the other chemistry teachers.
