Early in 1979, many people felt the pinch as gas prices drastically rose to close to Sl and over a gallon. Self-serve gasoline stations began to appear across the nation in an attempt for owners to make money by taking advantage of the lower prices that could be offered on self-serve gas. Half gallon prices were common at many stations around the nation. Inflation on all products dramatically increased during 1979-1980. People were forced to buy less of what they wanted in order to have money for the items that they needed. As prices rose, most individ- ual incomes could not increase fast enough to meet the rising inflation. Though prices were high and money short, most businessmen reported sharp buying of gifts during the Christmas sea- son. When the U.S. Embassy in Iran was overthrown in late November, and Embassy workers became hostages, sup- porters of the Ayatollah Khomeini demanded the return of the Shah in exchange for American Hostages. The power generated by one group of people upon thousands of people was tragically proven at a rock concert in Cin- cinati during early December. The prob- lem of general admission seating into a limited capacity stadium caused thirteen deaths and many injuries as many scream- ing people attempted their way in to see the group The Whof, The abnormally warm weather and lack of freezing temperatures in late November and December brought early spring temp- eratures to much of the southern areas of Arizona. The warmer temperatures also attracted more out of state travelers, pleasing most Arizona businessmen and businesses. As Americans, we ended a decade of turmoil as we moved into the 80's. Prices in half gallons was one of the changes motorists had to accept during the drastic price changes. 4. Matt Knop expresses his opinion of the Shah during the Iranian crisis.
