for female gender With many new girls and two new coaches. the girls' track team had a rebuilding year this year. according to Miss Angleton. new Head Track Coach. Returning Seniors on the team were Kathy Cosentino. Sandy Sistek. Mary Fields and Becky Radke. Other returning lettergirls were Jackie Zaccaria, Ellen Louhi, Eileen Kipecky and Shannon Emmons. These girls along with the new ones helped make the sea- son a winning one. The girls practiced five days a week from 2:30 to 5. They worked on such events as sprintsjumping. discus and shot. and long dis- tance. There were also two relay teams so handoffs were practiced frequently. Every day they worked on their events trying to perfect them as best as possible. There were a few extra meets the girls ran. Some attended spon- sored l0.000 meter runs that were run around the Phoenix area in different places. Five of the girls went on their own to a pre-season meet at Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff. The Paradise Valley Girls' Basketball team was defi- nitely one of the teams to beat with a number of return- ing veterans from last year with a 22-3 season record. Because of this, there was reason to be optimistic, said Mr. Leon Quackenbush, teacher at Deer Valley Junior High and 3rd year of coaching girls' basketball. The girls' basketball team had a successful season this year. Shelley Brower, lst team all division from last year. led the team with returning starters Claudia Fini- cal and Mitt Haff. Erika Storm and Lisa Gray provided additional valuable experience to team. The toughest opponents for the team were Washing- ton, Apollo and Moon Valley. The girls practice every day from 2-5pm or 5-8pm. They did running, drills. offensive and defensive moves to be ready for all their games.
