Heavyweight Brett Hicks pins his Prescott opponent. 144 Var ity fini hes with perfect season The Trojan grapplers. coached by Mr. Frank Grundler. finished with a remarkable 10-0 season. Senior Sensation Jeff Dempsey. undefeated in 26 matches for the season. finished his high school career by winning the State crown for his weight class. Sophomores Tony Popovich and Derrick Roberts placed third in the State competions enabling Paradise Valley to land the third place position in the State AAA Wrestling Championships. The goals that we've stressed every year at the beginning of the season are those of winning the Division and State Tournaments. Our practice sessions are geared toward these goals. Having an undefeated season is excellent but that's not our main thing. said Coach Grundler. Returning lettermen were Seniors Brian Downie, Cory Wakefield, Brett Hicks. Dan Kleitsch, Leif Barnes and Jeff: Juniors Andre Fournier and Tony. The team as a whole placed second in the Skyline Division Tournament. lt was a total team effort that helped keep the Trojans at the top of the division. Tony was victorious in the final match of the tournament and came away with the lO8 lbs. championship title. Jeff also won in the finals. defending his l70 lbs. title. Placing second were team leaders Dan and Brett. Andre and Derrick. Leif took fourth place title. L'The caliber of athletes we had this year allowed us to work very hard. The wrestlers would do extra work such as running 'the mountainl doing extra sprints after workouts and practicing their techniques. Varsity Assistant Coach Roger Fournier generated a lot of enthusiasm as well as helping with the teaching of technique, said Coach Grundler. gsm lime 3
