Starting with little game experience, the Freshman basketball team improved greatly by the end of the season with a record of 6-14. Led by Dave Phelps, leading scorer, and Dave Herron, leading rebounder they helped their team play many close games which could have gone either way. The game against Shadow Mountain was lost by only 6 points. Under the leadership of Coach Rob Babcock, the team showed potential and With more experience will add depth to next year's teams. Despite their record of 5-15, the JV team showed great improvement and determin- ation. Led by Mr. Irvine in his first year of coaching, the team lost many close games in the final minutes. The top scorers for the year were Ed Horger, sophomore, and jim judge, sophomore. The two co-captians were Lonnie Fanning, junior, and Chris Hahn, junior. jeff St. Germain was the leading rebounder for the season. Undefeatecl Matmen Climax Season As bl' fr, lt's a big smile of victory as senior Reed Newell takes the top spot in div- isional finals. The Trojan wrestlers this year, coached by Mr. Frank Grundler, capped a perfect 10-O season by decisively capturing the AAA Skyline Division Championship for the second consecutive year. During the regular season dual matchels, the undefeated Trojans compiled 413 team points as compared to only 139 by their opponents. The PV grapplers also competed in two invitational tournaments during the course of the season. They took first place in the Scottsdale Invi- tational in which 16 schools competed and third place in the Peoria Invitational, the largest wrestling tournament in Arizona with 41 schools competing. Eleven wrestlers placed in the Scottsdale tournament, including six first places and two outstanding wrestler awards for Russ Earegood and Glenn Palmer. Eight wrestlers placed in the Peoria tournament and Glenn also received another outstanding wrestler award. In divisional competition, the PV matmen :accumulated 113 1X2 points while their next closest competitor, Washington High, scored only 89 1X2 points. Nine Trojan wrestlers advanced into either the conso- lation of finals matches, automatically qualifying them for the state tournament. Five of the nine wrestlers went on to become divisional champions. They were Russ Earegood, Tim Matteson, Reed Newell, Glenn Palmer and Eric Stine. john Barrese, Dave Pellerin and Howard Frintner all chalked up seconds and jerry Grim took a fourth. Last, but certainly not least, the Trojans went on to capture the runner-up spot in the state competition. Five PV wrestlers placed in the state tournament. Russ Earegood and jerry Grim took second places, Glenn Palmer and john Barrese took third places and Reed Newell took fourth place.
