9-1 Record Catapults Trojans to First Setting an unprecedented 9-l record, the PV Trojans this season netted 3, 569 total yards, scored 42 touchdowns, racked up 294 points against their opponents and finished in the top ten AAA high school football ratings. The Trojans opened the season with a 37-26 victory over Scottsdale and then went on to defeat Glendale, Cortez, Thunderbird, Moon Valley and Apollo in their next five games. Boasting a thus far perfect record, PV then clashed with the powerful St. Mary's Knights, the only other undefeated team in the Skyline conference. After losing starting quarter- back, Mike Rosky, early in the game with a knee injury, the Trojans just couldn't seem to get it back together again. Consequently, they suffered their first and only loss of the season along with their all important bid for the division championship, by a score of 42-14. Afterwards, the Trojans bounced back to defeat Sunnyslope and Washington and then finished off the season with a whopping 48-6 victory over Prescott. A few of the players who made outstanding contributions to the team's success were Greg jones, Eric Stine, Monte Cole, Mark Wingfield and Richard Van Pelt. Their ex- ceptional playing won each of these players special post season recognition. jerry Grim, another outstanding performer, set two new PV school records as he rushed for an all time high of 945 yards and scored a record breaking ll touchdowns in a single season. Head Coach Richard Anders attributes much of the team's success to its weight lifting program. The players lift weights three times a week, which according to Anders serves two purposes. lt makes the boys stronger so they don't get hurt as easily and it develops strong team unity. Other schools have weight programs, he noted, but ours works because the boys are not forced to come, they want to come. , - .5 -op. 1 I r K' X 3 t NVQ 55 'Q' vw 112- 0 I 1 S xv' fi-iiiS'qq ia., Q .. 4, 1 W , ' t-ff it ,..,- 54.1, -. t' '-Q Q by , A t A ' mt Q . in 1 Nl A I .moi Even Kung Fu tactics couldn't stop ball carrier Wayne Keenan, 21, as Trojans marched to a 28-12 victory over Moon Valley. Despite several injuries, JV closed out the season with a 4-3-1 record and freshmen wrapped up their season with a record breaking 5-3 mark. During the season, the JV team, led by quarterbacks Billy Karl and Bart Good, racked up 141 total points while hold- ing their opponents to only 94 total points. The freshman team, in the process of establishing the best frosh record in PV history, managed to accumulate 91 points, but allowed their opponents to score 103. The scores show, however, that the bulk of points scored against the team came during the three losses that the team suffered, and that the team won most of their games by sub- stantial amounts.
