Students Discover World Beyond Classroom Q' W .ig I dv? Junior Bill Bruin adjusts the focus on the department's new six inch reflector telescope, which is to be used for star gazing sessions. Biology student Rod Topel checks instructions before beginning his experiment. Although only one year of science is required, this department has much to offer anyone who stays longer. There are 14 different classes from which to choose and a variety of interests to pursue. Classes range from three levels of Earth Science to Physics, Chemistry and Ad- vanced Placement Biology. Also included are geology, ecology, biogeography and space science. Many innovations have been made to further the learning process and the department has also acquired several new pieces of equipment, which it hopes will enable students to probe subjects in much geater depth. These new additions include a 55 gallon aquarium, several biological models, a reflector telescope and a very impressive Sl, 500 phase contrast micro- scope, with which students can actually take pictures and movies of the specimens they are viewing. Accordingto Mr. James Heinrichs, department chairman, This school's equip- ment and facilities exceed even those in some of the colleges around the state. as Q V 'V li Eg, X if 1 Y Xi l S . is f,. Two Students work toward improving their team's score in a P. E. class soccer game. 58 4 Although the number of students in the school has dropped the number of students taking Physical Education hasn't. As a matter of fact, the number taking the Health Classes has increased, stated Mr. Charles Baker, Physical Education Department chairman. PE has a variety of classes from which girls may choose, ranging from Advanced Gymnastics and dance for girls who have taken PE before, through Advanced PE for upper- classmen to beginning PE for freshmen and those who have never taken a PE course before. Freshman boys have Introduction to Boys PE and Advanced PE for upperclassmen. Athletes have a new class offered to them called Athletic Training to help them improve their skills in the sport in which they are participating. Injuries received in a sport may also be checked in this class. Health Education, taught by Mr. Anders, is offered in the PE department. It is offered to all students and teaches them about their bodies, both mentally and physically, and also explains the use and effect of drugs on the body. The double expansion of class size shows that student interest has also expanded in Health. 3 P.E. Curriculum Uffers Coach Roy Muller watches as his students practice wrestling moves.
