Larry Smyle, Mark McDade, Tim Spense and joRita Pedersen workin a group in their Government class. .hl.......419-7 . f Y Anthropology Adds to History Selection Mr. Wolfe, Government teacher, starts group discussion by explaining a problem to be solved. The students are asked to solve problems that might arise if they were sent to a space colony in the year 2000. UU. 52 Eliasab dirfhni-inlldxm.'. Anthropology is the newest course this year in the Social Studies Department, making it nine from which to chose. lt is a half sem- ester course in which one studies the origin, the developments and the beliefs of mankind. Other courses in the department range from World History and Government to Free Enterprise and Sociology. The Current Events Game, started last year, is played among the classes every Friday to see which class can answer the most questions about news of the week. Two clubs that are related to the Social Studies Department are the Arizona History and Hiking Club sponsored by Mr. William Pellett and Mrs. Mildred Pettis, and the Ecology Club sponsored by Mr. William Verhulst.

For the students who are just beginning Math in High School Patterns of Mathematics is offered to help build their interest in Math. For students with a stronger background in Math, Trigonometry, which is first semester only, and Analytical Geometry. which is available second semester, are also offered. As one credit of Math is required for grad- uation, Introduction to Algebra will be accept- ed for a High School math credit but not for college entrance. Freshman Algebra and Geometry are recommended by colleges, but they will accept a High School diploma. Attracted to Paradise Valley this year were two new teachers. Mr. Van Rockel teaches Algebra 3 Sz 4B and Geometry B and Mr. Cornell teaches Geometry B and General Math Junior Nick LaMonica demonstrates knowledge of Algebra 3 G 4 at the board.
