WW Foreword In order, to uphold the memories of school days at Paradise High School, we the Class of 1950, have published this edition of the Tanawan for the purpose of showing our gratitude for the happiest years of our lives and towards the attaining of our goals in life in years to come. We sincerely hope that the work included within the pages of this book may bring a vividipicture to the minds of those who read it and an idea of the activities that are carried on around our school. eil. --- In Appreciation ---1 We, the members of the Class of 1950, wish to extend our thanks and appreciation to everyone who has aided in the preparation of this yearbook. We especially wish to thank Mr. Eshelman and Miss Ful- giniti for their interest in the publication of this book. We also wish to thank Mr. York and Mr. Long, our photographers, as well as Mr. Wolf, our printer, and all our patrons who contributed to make this book possible. Four S. DEDICATION This 1950 edition of The Tiiniiwanu is dedicated to Miss liulginiti who has been with our flass since the Sophomore ye Class Advisor. Com- mencement formally marks the close of the high school career for you the graduates of the class I of 1950. It is with deep and sincere interest that I extend to each one of you the congratulations and hest wishes of our school. It is with some regret that I watch your departure, yet I would not wish to hold you always as students in our school. It is the Way of life that you should go forth, tomorrow, from high school to seek new experiences for yourselves. Young people, the school career which you are now closing has heen just what you have made it. All of us are huilders of our own life. The life ahead of you will he just what you will make it. Re- gardless of the vocation or the profession you find yourselves working in, all of you are engaged in huilding and making of your life what you will. In connection with such a theory of living, I am reminded of the few lines of the poem which read something like this: I.n11'f it fllllllj' 111111 !7l'jI1c'6.I' and Lfllgj' And l'f0Il'1l,l' fluff caper jll ,iz111'd11.vl l'jll4Q.I A1111 1711111111111 111r11'lal,i' like V111 illhf 1110 Are bllifderii' for efe1'111fy.9 I Tn carb ii' given a Img of frmlf A fllllllfi of clay, and az boob of 1'11le,r.' I am sure you have found to he but a stepping stone. High school life has heen, I hope, a stepping stone to a deeper insight into the democratic way of life. I hope that your knowledge gained from the association of four years in high school into the literature, science and history of the world may ever he for you a stepping stone to a richer, fuller. happier and a more meaningful life. To each one of you has heen given talents for activity hy the Creator. Each one has heen given training for usefulness. The rules of life have heen pretty well outlined to you. Here is your world hefore you. Your future is the lump of clay you are given. It is your joh to fashion something of it. We hope that you make of your life something of use for yourselves and for others. The decision lies with you as individuals. If you have the strength of character, if you have the nerve and will power necessary to see yourselves through every situation, I am sure that you will fashion your future wisely. Rememher you dare not f strike out. May the guidance of a kind Providence he yours to the end that each one of you may he happy and contrihuting citizens in a peaceful world order. ARTHUR W. Here we learned life's duties, yearly Throughout our high school daysg Freshman, Sophomore, junior, Senior To send us on life's busy ways. Though our talents may be slender We shall try to carry them throughg To keep us goingg onward, upward In the future work we do. Where the endless paths may lead usg We are truly unawareg Alma Mater, ere we leave thee We thank you for your care. VIOLET STOLTZFUS Twenty CLASS PROPHECY We are the prophets of the class, we determine the futures for those who pass. The world today holds many trades, some are good and some are bad. As we gaze into our crystal ball we see our classmates near, and far. Some are bookkeepers, some are clerks, others farmers and typing experts. PAULINE BURKHOLDER our editor-in-chief studied accountancy and climbed to the peak. There is GLENN ESHLEMAN, class president of SO established a grocery-BUY RIGHT AND BE THRIFTY. There seems to be static, oh! now it comes clearg it is just HARRY STRUBEL in his horse raising career. I wonder who that is riding high on the steed, with the flowing white tail and the harness of beads. Oh! it's KENNETH SUMMERS, successfully made, a skillful horse trainer in the horse rais- ing trade. Gee! what's that clucking heard in our ball, well if it isn't CARL EBERLY with his poultry and all. Farther away, see if I could, a hammering and sawing of hickory wood. Why it's philosopher CHARLES STEINMAN and his friend BILL FOULK, fine carpenters are they, quite proper and civil. DICK LEIDY and MARVIN REIMOLD are next in line, they are mechanics of machinery rehned. Guess who is typing away in their ofliceg I'll bet you a dollar it's JOAN LEAMAN and VIOLET STOLTZFUS. Let us skip to New York, where we can see a few more of our classmates and pals, that we once knew and admired. Who should we see traveling that wayg but GEORGE SWEIGART, a pilot for T.W.A. Within this great plane, JOYCE REINFRIED is revealed, as stewardess and hostess for those who appeal. PAUL BURKHOLDER a prominent passenger is he, enroute to New York as a whole- saler of meat. Into the airport they are coming full speed, to land on the runway and not in the trees. The co-pilot aboard is EUNICE HERSH. I can see Fifth Avenue with many exquisite shopsg could some of the proprietors be part of our stock? Surely enough there's PAT KEARNEY and JEAN STAUFFER, collaborated into one to sell ladies' hosiery. A few feet away from Pat's hosiery shop, there are two more of our classmates that specialize in crops. Crops of hair is what we're referring tog with beauticians well known, that own and operate this modern salon. Smoke and dust is clouding our vision, but we'Il soon see some more with outstanding positions. Seen afar in Brooklyn, New York, JOYCE MOORE is librarian and guardian of books. Studying art at Pratt Institute, is NANCY ZIMMERMAN, an artist of great forests and brooks. The New York University of higher learning shows a few more as instructors and teachers. This includes DAVID CARSON with the title of pro- fessor, he teaches chemistry, and gives numerous lectures. JOAN LADERACH too, is a competant instructor, she lectures on French and English literature. ELLA RYNIER seems to be present as laboratory technician of research medicine. MARY LOUISE WILSON, the astronomer of the class, is observing the planets through high-powered glass. ROBERT RUTTER, a proficient electrician, has brought to the world, colored television. DONALD SMOKER, a master at the art of designing, de- signs the interiors of ocean liners. LOVIS KRAMER, a policewoman with a lot on her mind, com- bats and solves mysteries and crimes. ARLENE WEAVER is a housewife, and a good one at that, she has a comfortable home and a boy named Jack. We see KATHLEEN DENLINGER, as a resourceful secretary, she takes notes and dictation from the Sec. of the Treasury. THIS GREAT CRYSTAL BALL SO OLD AND SO CRACKED, I-IAs SHOWN Us THE LAST OF THIS REMARK- ABLE CLASS. CLASS OF '50 I ll ilne.r.re.r: Miss Fulginiti Mr. Eshelman Twen ty-three 'mi CLASS HISTORY As our high school days are rapidly coming to an end, we look back over those glorious days. The thought of leaving prompts us to reminisce our wonderful days spent there. On September 9, 1946, there were thirty Freshmen, who entered Room F with Mr. Blevins, as our teacher. We were initiated by the Sophomores. Class oliicers for that year were elected as follows: President, Donald Smoker, Vice-President, David Carson, Secretary, Joan Denlingerg and Treasurer, Joyce Moore. The same year we had two new teachers: Miss Fulginiti and Mr. Althouse. The class visited the newspaper plant and Station WLAN in Lancaster. Beginning the Sophomore year on September 8,1947, we were assigned to the Stage as our home- room, with Miss Fulginiti as our teacher. Just to be different, we elected all girls for ofhce in this order: President, Joan Denlingerg Vice-President, Joyce Moore, Secretary, Pauline Burkholderg Treas- urer, Kathleen Denlinger. There were thirty-four pupils in our class, including seven new members from Strasburg. Mr. Blevins took the class to Philadelphia, one day in the spring. During the day, we visited the Zoo, the Franklin Institute, and the Museum of American History. At night, we saw a baseball game at Shibe Park. We had our first class party that year, The Silly Sophomore Serenade. By the time we became Juniors - September 7. 1948 -we were still the smallest class with thirty members, so we remained on the Stage. The class voted for officers and this was the result: President. Glenn Eshleman, Vice-President, Donald Smoker, Secretary, Pauline Burkholderg Treasurer, Kathleen Denlinger. That year we had two class parties: Jolly Junior Jamboree, and Bugs' Bunnys' Busy Night. We ordered and received our class rings, pennants, emblems, and hats. The Junior and Senior play was called Fresh as a Daisy. For our long-awaited Senior year, we were assigned Room C with Miss Fulginiti as homeroom teacher. For class officers, the class voted for the following: President, Glenn Eshlemang Vice-President, David Carson, Secretary, Kathleen Denlinger, and Treasurer, Joyce Moore. There were thirty-two stu- dents in the class, with four new members. Two were from Salisbury and two were from Christiana. The Junior and Senior play for this year was a comedy, The Happier We'Il Be. Miss Friday took the Business Law class to court, to hear a murder case. Mr. Blevins supervised the Problems of Democ- racy class trip to Lancaster to see Industry on Parade. The class held a dance after the last basket- ball game, and also a class party in March, The Senior Finale.
